looking to get started in concert photography

hello concert photographers of reddit i am here begging for wisdom 🙏😭

i'm a 16 y/o and i really wanna get into concert photography because it looks insanely fun and i love music, but i have NO clue where to start. cameras confuse me. photo passes confuse me. everything confuses me honestly.

how did you guys start out?
what gear do beginners actually need?
how do you even get into venues/shows to take photos?
can you start with tiny local shows first? i've got so many big concerts/events that are happening this year but i don't think it's a good idea to start out with something big

basically just throw any beginner advice at me because i am LOST 🫡

Are NDA’s normal?

I obtained a photo pass for a medium sized concert tonight. They sent me an email about 20 minutes before I left for the show asking me to sign and return a non disclosure agreement. Basically saying not to disclose any of the events or share any of the photos with anyone and that I cannot post the pictures on social media without written consent. Is this a common thing in the industry? If so how strict are they on that social media rule? Will it be hard to get written consent?

EDIT: I signed the NDA, didn’t have much time to think since they threw it at me super last minute. Coming to the realization that I probably shouldn’t have, but at least I got more experience and can say I’ve shot my biggest artist so far. Hoping for the best now to get approval to post a few for my portfolio.

Unpopular Opinion

Every concert pic looks the same.

Turn around.

Take pics of people dancing and enjoying their favorite artists.

Give me the artist's perspective.

Pics of backstage debauchery - or their rider.

The smoke break outside between sets.

Load-in. The venue. Crowd shots. Merch booth.

1 or 2 of them jamming is cool, I guess, and yelling into a mic looks the same.

Capture the energy of the show.

First Time Shooting a Gig!

Last week I on a bit of a whim I decided I wanted to learn photography, so as one does I picked up an A6700 and started to practice.

Before this the only photography experience I really had was using the automatic mode on my phone or old point and shoot film cameras in my uni days.

A few days after getting my camera I found myself with the opportunity to shoot a pretty big band in Sydney and I have just finished processing a few of my shots in lightroom.

I would love to know what you think and if you have any advice for someone starting out shooting gigs!

Is upgrading to a full frame worth it?

I’ve heard online that a full frame sensor gives better low light performance. If this is even true at all, how much better is it? I currently use a Fuji x-t3 and only shoot local gigs.

Sneaking a camera in.

Had a band I enjoy use my photos as an audience member a few months ago on their instagram. They’ve shared them a few times, my face is even on their page.

I asked them if I could shoot for them at their next show, which happens to be in a few days but I asked months ago. They sent me the email to their admin in regards of a photo pass but they forwarded me onto the festival director/ event promoter. However, they turned me down.

So I’m gonna sneak my camera in. Anyone, Australian residence in particular, snuck their camera in?

Marcos Witt: Legado 2025

I was given the privilege of photographing my first concert this last year before going to train in the military. I wanted to know what I could work on and how I could better my photography (especially in a lowlight condition).

Canon r100

Canon rf 50mm f1.8

Canon rf-s 55-210mm f5-7.1

(I have upgraded gear now, but I want to focus on style and what to do instead!)

Back with my second concert. A few new frames with some new glass.

Technical Info
Camera: Fujifilm X-T30 II
Lenses: Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 & Viltrox 85mm f/1.8
Process: Shot in RAW, color graded in Lightroom.
IG: bringmethefujifilm

Back with my second concert shoot! This time it was a tiny, packed venue with terrible lighting and a crazy crowd. Most people were smiling and letting me through when they saw my camera raised, though a few strictly refused to budge (totally understand and respect that).

The Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 is an absolute beast for capturing the scale and the crazy stage lights, while the 85mm f/1.8 helped me hunt for those raw, tight emotional moments from a distance.

Also, a crazy thing happened after my last post. Pixie Bella (IG: pixpop) - whose legendary Bring Me The Horizon concert shots literally inspired my entire editing style - found my profile. She followed me, praised my work, and reminded me of my own talent. It felt completely surreal.

Still learning and loving every second. Would love to hear your thoughts, any support or feedback means a lot!

Puscifer at Red Rocks, 2026

I was exceptionally fortunate to get to photograph Puscifer at Red Rocks this year. Always a fun show.

Is nikon zfc considered pro?

i’m going to a concert next week and I was planning on taking my camera with me, a Nikon Z fc, with a 16-50 lens already attached. I’m pretty close to the stage so it would be enough for what I’m looking for. However concert policy says no professional cameras allowed. I’m no professional photographer, I only use it to take pics of my dog or trips but mostly of my dog. Do you think it could be rejected at entry by security? Ive been to other concerts before and was able to pass security with a Nikon D80 with a bigger lens but this was like 10 years ago and idk just wanted to see with any who could be more experienced. thanks!
