Niche question regarding chant tones and liturgical rank

Laudetur Jesus Christus.

Personally I distinguish between Optional Memorials and Obligatory Memorials by taking the non-proper material from the Temporal in the former and from the Commons in the latter. Do hymn tones belong to these categories as well?

What I mean is that even though Terce, Sext, None and Compline ordinarily have no Sanctoral variation on Memorials, the corresponding hymns do have tones particular to when the liturgical day is a Memorial (compare Te lucis's ferial and memorial tone).

When celebrating an Optional Memorial and taking everything non-proper from the Temporal (i.e., only commemorating in the Concluding Prayer at Lauds and Vespers), would one still use the hymn tones of the Memorial at the minor Hours?

Prayed the full Office for the first time :0

I made a private retreat with a Benedictine twin community of monks and nuns last weekend and it was truly heavenly! I prayed all the hours with them between Friday vespers (first Vespers for Assumption) and Sunday Lauds before driving back to attend Mass at my home parish. I think they use the Solesmes monastic office? All were chanted in Latin except Vigils which was in English. The Vigils were prayed separately -- The monks prayed earlier in the large church while the nuns prayed a bit later in their house chapel. I joined the nuns in their house and I loved how intimate it felt and just the experience of prasing the Lord with them at the break of dawn. I already can't wait to go back and I wish I could be there for longer.

I usually try to pray the hinge hours with my friends while in school using one of the apps but haven't really been doing it during the summer because it feels awkward praying by myself😅 but I should go back to praying it regularly.. Hopefully one day I can get a physical copy of the breviary

I owe the group an apology

I can be overly certain and forceful in my opinions. I regret that. I can also be righteous and judgmental in how I communicate my thoughts. I regret that too. My comment about the imprecatory Psalms was me being a jerk. I hope y'all will forgive me.

I've decided to tackle two goals that I've long wanted to do. First I want to learn the 1961 Breviary using the three volume Baronius Press edition. It'll take me a few weeks to feel comfortable with it. Once I have some level of mastery, I plan to tackle another goal, to pray all of the offices for a week. This will allow me to pray the entire Psalter. I think it's important for me to do this.

I'm going to disappear from this subreddit until I've finished these two goals. Again, please forgive me for being a jerk.

Mea maxima culpa, Rick.

Roman v Monastic

Howdy fellow breviary enthusiasts!

I wanted to get your thoughts on the my breviary choice. I’ve long believed that it is best to use the breviary that is proper to your community, but what is one to do if they are part of two communities?

I attend the TLM and generally prayed the Roman Breviary. When I became a Benedictine Oblate of Clear Creek, I took up the monastic breviary. However, I attend Mass every day at my parish and only visit my monastic community once per year. Would it not be more advantageous to pray the Roman Breviary?

And yes, I’m aware that since I have no obligation I can do as I wish. I’m just interested in the community’s opinion. Our Oblate statutes encourage us to pray some part of the office, but we’re specifically told that which form of the Breviary is our choice, with some using the monastic breviary, some the Roman, and some the LOTH, so the door is open.

TIA for your opinions!

“Guide” booklet for AP and WOF LOTH

Are the publishers of the new LOTH (Ascension and Word on Fire) will publish an annual guide (like the picture) or are they going to make it free online?

Excited and want to share

So my wife and I talked tonight and she agreed that I should get my pre order in before it's to late. Yes, my wife and I discuss any purchase that is going to be above $200 and this is.

I'm so freaking excited. I've been praying Christian Prayer for 3 years and just never made the jump to the 4 volume set. I've decided that since I've been pretty consistent with my prayer that this is a purchase that makes sense. A purchase that will last me my entire life and something I can hand down to my kids or grandkids.

I wanted to share with you all because no one in my actual off Internet life can relate lol!

I don't want to start a debate between Ascension and Word on Fire. I know each of them have their pros and cons. I went with Word on Fire for a few reasons. For me it was just the one I visually liked more. That being said I own a ton of ascension's books and love them too.

I don't want this to be a debate post. I just wanted to post my excitement of finally pulling the trigger!!! I'm like on cloud nine! Is it January yet lol??

I suck at praying the LOTH. I feel like I always end up just mindlessly saying the words. When I do Lectio Divina or something I'm so much more locked in. I want to enjoy the hours but I just struggle. Help me!

Office of Readings

As we prepare for the release of the new LOTH, I have decided to start praying with the actual physical books. I hope this doesn’t sound like a stupid question, but where do I find the concluding prayer for the Office of Readings. Any help is greatly appreciated.

1962 Office Vs Liturgy of The Hours?

I’ve been praying the Liturgy of the Hours for about a year now. I came into full communion with the Catholic Church shortly before that and was drawn to an FSSP Parrish that offered the extraordinary form of mass.

As time has gone on, I predominantly go to reverent Novus Ordo liturgies, but I feel called often to go back to the TLM. It’s a much further drive and makes it more difficult for me to be a present member of the Parrish, but something still draws me.

Have yall found any more fruitfulness from praying the 1962 office over the liturgy of the hours? What are some ways in which one or the other is better? I’ve found as a layman who works full time, the liturgy of the hours is much more accessible in terms of praying the full office everyday.

Christian Prayer (St. Paul Editions)

so, I found this lovely edition of Christian Prayer, but when I went to check where its approved to use the United States is not listed as one of the countries it’s approved for use in. comparing it to my CBP edition, it’s approved for use in the same countries as the CBP one is, except for the United States.

so, does that mean the only one volume breviary currently approved for use in the United States is the one by CBP and the St.Paul edition simply isn’t approved for use here. Quite strange since, as far as I can tell, it’s the same translation

Help me understand some things about the liturgical nature of private lay recitation

A couple motivating examples:

  1. I'm saying Lauds before leaving for work and realize I'm running late. I skip the 3rd psalm and the intercessions so I can get to work on time. Have I committed a liturgical abuse? Would it have been better for me not to begin saying the Office if I wasn't confident time would allow?

  2. A person has some particular saints that are important patrons for him. If he loves St Maximilian Kolbe and his confirmation name is Gabriel, and he says those offices as Solemnities out of devotion, is that in line with GILH 243-245? If not, is it a liturgical abuse? Is he sinning by doing so?

The Liturgy of the Hours is the public prayer of the Church; to what extent does it remain that when unobligated laymen say it in private- and do they incur a grave responsibility to do it correctly once they open the book?

Removal of Psalms

I love the LOTH, but after learning that many verses and even entire psalms are omitted, I’ve had a lot of difficulty with accepting that. I’m not someone who is generally mistrusting of V2 or anything like that, but this just really shakes my trust in the wisdom of the leaders of the Church.

I find myself seeing the Psalms that have been shortened to avoid “hurtful” language and it causes me deep sadness. How could the word of God be unfitting for public prayer? After all, He gave it to us to pray, and Jesus Himself prayed every Psalm.

Finally, it causes me to even question how much the Catholic Church can be said to have truly “passed down” this tradition after altering it so much. I know other breviaries are options as well, but the LOTH is the current official prayer of the Church, and so I want to stick with it, but these things still trouble me.

maybe someone here relates to how I’m feeling and has worked through it?
