Switching locations

So I got an interview in an area overseas I’m not necessarily excited about but from my experience jobs with the dodea can be hard to get. I was wondering if I got this and worked for a year do you have an easier time switching to other locations? Like do you get preferential treatment when other locations have openings.

I’m a speech therapist is that changes anything

Spouse employment

Hi everyone,

I was recently hired as a school nurse for a DoDEA school in Europe, but my family and I do not qualify for LQA. We’re currently trying to decide whether to accept the final offer or not.

Honestly, if we knew my husband would likely get hired within the next year or two, this would feel like an easy yes financially and for our family overall. But the uncertainty of whether he’ll actually be able to find work is what’s making this such a hard decision.

He has a master’s degree in education, is a certified social studies teacher, and plans to work toward additional endorsements in ELA and Spanish. He also loves sport and has tons of experience coaching. He currently is an athletic director and a basketball coach.

I would really love to hear from people who have been in a similar situation:
- Did your spouse eventually get hired?
- Did they struggle to find work?
- Would you still recommend taking the position without LQA?
- Any advice, encouragement, or even cautionary stories would honestly help.

We’re trying to make the most informed decision possible for our family. I know no one has all the answers, but hearing other people stories is helpful. Thanks so much.

USAJOBS Japan — Advice for DoDEA Administrative Officer GS-11 Interviews?

I’m looking for advice from anyone familiar with DoDEA Administrative Officer positions in Japan or overseas federal hiring in general.

I’m a Navy veteran and previously lived in Japan from 2018–2022 while stationed in Yokosuka, so my long-term goal has been to return through a federal civilian position. Recently I’ve had a couple of interviews for Administrative Officer GS-11 positions with DoDEA in Japan, but unfortunately no luck so far.

My background is mainly in federal program support and operations. I also completed my Master’s in Health Information Management in December and recently earned my RHIA credential. My experience includes:

  • administrative operations
  • stakeholder coordination
  • recruitment support
  • budgeting support
  • data analysis/reporting
  • process improvement
  • compliance and documentation management

I’m wondering if there’s something I may be missing during the interview process for overseas positions.

For anyone currently working as a DoDEA Administrative Officer:

  • What is the day-to-day work actually like?
  • What kinds of interview responses stand out the most?
  • Is there anything specific they look for in overseas candidates?

I’ve been laid off for about a year now, so I’m trying to stay persistent and improve where I can. Any honest advice would really be appreciated.

LQA/backpay question

Currently teaching overseas with Dodea and interviewing for a different DoD position in Italy. Will I have to pay back LQA for the summer if I accept the position and move to Italy? I am taking RAT this summer so I'm assuming I'll have to pay that back but I'm not sure if I'll have to pay back LQA as well.

Thank you!
