EPFO passbook portal has been down since 26 June and now my background verification is stuck. What legal options do I have?

I never thought a government website being down could actually put someone's job at risk but here I am.

The EPFO passbook portal has been down for me since 26 June. I'm in the middle of background verification for a new job and the only pending document is my EPFO passbook. I have completed everything else but I simply cannot submit a document that EPFO itself is not letting me access.

What makes this even more frustrating is that the grievance portal is also not working for me so I cannot even raise an official complaint.

My employer keeps sending reminders because the document is still pending. Right now I'm just hoping they understand the situation and don't delay my joining or withdraw the offer because of something that is completely outside my control.

I honestly don't understand how a service that millions of employees depend on can remain unavailable for so long. People use EPFO records for jobs, background verification, loans and so many other important things. This isn't some random website that can stay down for weeks.

If my joining gets delayed or I lose this opportunity because EPFO failed to provide access to my own records I fully intend to explore every legal option available. I don't think citizens should have to suffer financial losses because a government service failed to do its job.

Has anyone here dealt with something similar?
If this actually causes me to lose my job or delays my joining what legal action can I take against EPFO? Can I claim compensation for the salary or financial loss? Has anyone successfully held them accountable for something like this?

I'm saving screenshots of the portal, emails from my employer and every reminder I receive because I have a feeling I might need all of it.

At this point I'm just angry. I did everything I was supposed to do and now my career is hanging because I can't access my own provident fund records.

UMANG App Still Not Working – EPFO Services Unavailable Due to Scheduled Migration

UMANG App Still Not Working – EPFO Services Unavailable Due to Scheduled Migration

Just wanted to update everyone who's trying to access EPFO services through the UMANG app.

The UMANG app is currently not working for EPFO services because the department is carrying out scheduled migration activities. According to the official message, services are expected to resume shortly.

The good news is that the EPFO Member Portal is now operational, and members can continue using EPFO services through the Member Portal instead of UMANG for the time being.

If you're unable to log in or use EPFO services on UMANG, it's likely due to this ongoing migration and not an issue with your account.

Has anyone received an estimated timeline for when UMANG will be fully operational again?

How to Check Your PF Balance Instantly:

when the UMANG app or EPFO portal is down, you can still access your PF details using alternative official methods:

By SMS: Send an SMS formatted as EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number.

By Missed Call: Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile number.

Latest EPFO News

Latest EPFO News:

EPF Scheme 2026 is now in effect, replacing the 1952 scheme under the Code on Social Security. Core EPF benefits remain the same, but withdrawal rules and digital processes have been simplified.

Eligible PF claims are now targeted for settlement within 3 days through the enhanced auto-settlement system, although some claims may still take longer if verification is required.

The upgraded EPFO Unified Member Portal is live. UAN generation and activation have been shifted to the UMANG app using Aadhaar Face Authentication, while other member services continue on the portal.

EPFO services have resumed after the recent system upgrade and database migration, though some users may still experience temporary technical issues.

EPF interest rate remains 8.25% for FY 2026–27. The new EPF Scheme 2027 has not increased the interest rate.

EPFO ISSUE.

So I joined in a company for customer support role. For joining I gave my bank, Pan, and my UAN to them.

On the first day itself I said to HR that I want to resign.

And I didn't attended meetings from the afternoon itself.

After two days they sent me off boarding mail. This happend on 25th may 2026.

Now i am going to join another company but I am worried about what if this will appear in EPFO portal during my onboarding. Because they didn't gave me any reliving letter to me.

In EPFO it is showing no data found / member list empty.

On my first day they said that our salary will be credited on 7th every month. June passed and July came still it is showing no data found in EPFO.

Now guys please tell me will I going to face any problems in future?? Is there any some other portal where companies check about previous employment?....

Please tell me i am very much worried and tensed.

As an HR/Payroll professional, here is my take on the recent influx of EPFO hate posts.

Hello Everyone,

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of posts in this thread, and most of them are about how bad EPFO is, how people aren't able to withdraw their own money during emergencies, and suggestions that one should withdraw everything from EPF and invest it elsewhere (I'm not gonna suggest if you should withdraw or not, that's your personal decision but be matured enough and think before you take a decision on that)

First things first, let me be very clear—I'm not here to defend EPFO, nor am I here to blame people trying to withdraw their own money. There are shortcomings on both sides.

I'm an HRBP, and Payroll is one of my core KRAs. Because of that, EPF-related queries and compliance form a significant part of my work. I can confidently say that there are definitely gaps in how EPFO functions. Once an issue creeps into your account, getting it corrected can become an exhausting process (we all know how government departments work 🫠).

However, I also want to highlight something equally important: every employee should be aware of their own EPF account.

Most people don't even log into their EPF account until the day they urgently need money. In today's era, where information is available within seconds, it's not difficult to understand the common issues that can delay or reject a claim.

Don't blindly assume that because your employer is depositing PF every month, everything in your account is correct. Take some time to understand the EPF rules. Learn about the common issues that can block claims—wrong EPS allocation, missing contributions, incorrect personal details, KYC mismatches, nomination issues, service history discrepancies, and so on.

Spend an hour on a weekend. Log into your account, check your passbook, verify your service history, KYC, nomination, UAN details, and ensure everything looks correct. If you notice any issue, initiate the correction immediately, not when you're already facing a financial emergency.

One more thing that many people overlook:

Whenever you join a new organization, most companies ask you to fill Form 11. Ensure that you provide accurate information, especially regarding whether you're an existing EPF/EPS member.

If you join a startup or any organization that doesn't ask you to fill Form 11, don't assume they'll know your previous EPF status. Inform your HR in writing through email about your EPF/EPS membership. This creates a record and helps avoid incorrect EPS tagging or service history issues later.

Most importantly, after your first month's PF contribution, check your passbook and service history. Don't wait for years. Continue reviewing it every six months. Errors identified early are significantly easier to rectify than when you're already trying to withdraw your money during an emergency.

My personal experience:

I've withdrawn my EPF multiple times during my career. Only one or two claims were rejected, and those rejections were valid as per the claim rules.

Why were the rest settled without issues?

Because even before I started handling Payroll professionally, I spent time understanding the common problems people face with EPF and made sure my own account was always in order—whether it was EPS, nomination, KYC, service history, personal details, or even my photograph on the portal.

Again, this post is not meant to defend the department or criticize people whose claims are getting rejected.

Yes, it's extremely frustrating when the portal remains down for over a week because of an upgrade. Surely there could have been a better way to implement it without disrupting essential services. And yes... the passbook portal still being unavailable is another story altogether. 🤐

I'm attaching my claims history simply to show that if your profile details, service history, and records are accurate, your hard-earned money generally doesn't get stuck because of avoidable account issues.

Feel free to disagree. I know this may attract criticism, and that's completely okay. I just hope this encourages a few people to proactively review their EPF accounts before they actually need the money.

Any change in status for post-upgrade claims?

Has anyone's claim status changed from "submitted at portal"? Earlier it used to be sent to field office within a day

Comparison of epfo with good opportunities

I compared e.g 3lakh with basic small finance bank Fd with 8% and Epfo with 8.25% the result is almost similar only negative in fd is tax bracket only and somehow if we managed it that also better. As bank have quarterly compounding its comes near even with low interest, just think if u found some better fd like senior citizen fd in parents name, then think equity growth is way better even with capital growth. In epfo 8.25 but annual compounding and 8.25 also not stable each year they may change and ur money is locked somewhere even if u need for urgent ur unable to get most of time and new rules keep 25% for one year even ur unemployed, seems this money is useless even after unemployment. This is why epfo is for conservative investors, who dont want to put effort in finding good opportunities. Let me know ur suggestions.

Today I realised 70k per month is deducted towards EPF

So far I thought my monthly EPF deduction was 35k. I came across this subreddit today and saw so many people venting about EPFO. So, decided to check the site and was shocked to see it was 35k + 35k contribution per month.

If I have no need for that money immediately, is it a bad idea to leave it as it is? Or, should I request my company to reduce the EPF contribution to bare minimum i.e 1800, if possible?

I can think of this as my debt component. I already do monthly SIPs into Equity index funds and arbitrage funds, but no debt funds due to taxation at slab. This can act as my debt component if it's not risky to leave it as it is.

PLEASE HELP !!!!.....EPFO showing overlapping employment due to notice period PF contribution - can this be corrected or will it affect future PF claims?

Hi everyone,

I'm facing an issue with my EPFO service history and would appreciate any guidance from someone who has dealt with a similar situation.

Here's the timeline:

  • I resigned from Company A on 8 Aug 2025.
  • My resignation acceptance email clearly stated that I was "released from the services with immediate effect."
  • Based on that, I joined Company B on 11 Aug 2025.
  • Company B started depositing PF from my joining date (11 Aug).

Much later, I found that Company A had:

  • paid me for a 15-day notice period,
  • deposited PF for that period, and
  • marked my EPFO Date of Exit as 22 Aug 2025.

This has created an overlap in my EPFO service history from 11 Aug to 22 Aug 2025.

I contacted Company A requesting a correction. They replied that:

  • I was released with effect from 8 Aug 2025,
  • they paid for the 15-day notice period as per my employment terms, therefore PF contributions were deposited till 22 Aug,
  • and they cannot modify the PF exit date now and refusing to cooperate.

My questions are:

  1. Is there any provision under EPFO to correct the Date of Exit in such a case?
  2. If the employer refuses to modify it, can EPFO make any correction based on supporting documents?
  3. Will this overlap create problems in future PF transfers or withdrawals?
  4. Has anyone here successfully resolved a similar issue?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

EPFO New Update- Faster Claim Settlements & Penalty on Delays

The new guidelines heavily focus on digitization to eliminate paperwork and expedite your claims:

  • 3-Day Settlement: PF withdrawal claims must now be settled within 3 working days.
  • 20-Day Limit: Pension (EPS) and Insurance (EDLI) claims must be settled within 20 days.
  • Delay Penalty: To ensure accountability, if an EPFO official delays your claim beyond the deadline without a valid reason, the EPFO will pay you a 12% per annum interest penalty for the delayed period. This amount can be recovered directly from the responsible official's salary.

EPFO helpline is the most rudest helpline ever

I called 14470 helpline to tell them my concern. She was like "if you need money in 3 days, take a loan. We are government org and we need to cater to needs of people all over the country"

Also she said "This helpline is for general information about the claim. If you need more details go to PF office directly."

My Question is why do we have to be so submissive in getting the money which we earned. Have the Government Agencies got so used to mistreating people they think there is no need to respect us anymore or think that we are begging for money or what ?

No hope from EPFO

Is the EPFO department retarded ? I got my service history corrected through Joint Declaration and it was reflecting before the website underwent upgradation and today when I checked again, it is reflecting incorrect service history again. Surprisingly, I can still see in Joint Declaration that changes are accepted by field office. I am just fed-up of this ducked up department.
