CAD$8.37 from Walmart via Instacart
When I opened the package I got hit immediately with fresh basil and mozzarella.
I personally added a small amount of cheddar cheese and brushed some olive oil because I could see dry crust in the middle but there’s so much fresh basil sprinkled over this pizza that it completely overpowers everything. Do not buy this pizza if you don’t like basil 😂
After 15 mins at 425°F on the middle rack the crust has a slight crisp on the bottom and sides but it’s average quality, and there’s way too much dough which is mostly undercooked (and you can’t get around it because the sauce is so few i think it’d cook away).
The sauce isn’t bitter but it doesn’t have any complexity apart from being sweet, and because of the texture of the dough you will often get bites without sauce.
The mozzarella might look wet, but it’s very low moisture and becomes almost curd like when chewed. The flavour is what you’d expect.
TLDR: I wanted it to be good but won’t get it again and especially not for that price. Red Baron remains my frozen pizza king.
Let me start by saying I HATE RED BARON
I only purchased this because some people in this sub have claimed the brick oven style to be particularly good, and I figured sure brick oven is usually akin to a higher standard so I'll give it a shot, despite finding all previous red baron pizzas I have purchased to be unfinishable.
I cooked this per instructions, except that I put it in slightly early before the oven was preheated, and at the end did 2 minutes of broil on high because of the extra toppings I put on from our diy pizza night a few days prior. So if anything the extra pepperoni and peppers I put on made it better...
Okay now the REVIEW!
Pizza was in fact better than other red barons I have had... slightly. Im having trouble putting it into words but the bread and sauce and cheese still feel particularly frozen pizza-ey. The dough is always a dead giveaway on a bad frozen pizza, however the dough on this wasn't quite as bad as I remember other red baron pizzas, but marginally, just enough that I'm able to not be slightly repulsed by the pizza. So with that said this pizza has made it slightly over the edible line and landed ittself a firm 5/10 overall
It was also apparent that the cheese and peppers were not of good quality either. And the crust got really crunchy around the edges like a jacks pizza does, but its much thicker than a jacks so its not pleasant.
My wife specifically notes the cheese taste not so great, like frozen cheese.
The extra toppings I put on may have carried the pizza a bit. Hard to say for certain. It may have been a lot more bland without those extra flavors on there, possibly could have taken it into bad territory.
With that said though, the standout feature of this pizza was the price of $3.50 on sale. Red baron frequently goes on sale for dirt cheap which is why ive gotten them so often in the past and been disappointed. But considering this pizza is actually kind of edible, for $3.50 its hard to go wrong. Feeds 1 to 2 people.
Would buy again for the same sale price.
Easily one of the best pizzas in the frozen isle I’ve ever discovered. I was craving a new pizza to try, went to Walmart, and saw this. Couldn’t resist Brooklyn style pizza and decided to give this a try. I can’t believe this is a frozen pizza because it didn’t taste like one at all. Easy top 5 frozen pizza of all time. By far. Go get yourself one. Absolutely scrumptious pizza. Will definitely get again.
I cooked it per the instructions. 400 degrees. The cheese never cooks correctly. Hell, it looks undercooked as it's cooking, and never really melts into the cheesy top I expect. Why does it turn into this hard scab looking crap?
Bought on sale for $5 - this is one of the most consistently solid brands out there. Bakes up real nice. One of the most unique crunches when biting into. Slightly sweet sauce with good topping dispersion. Finished with parm/red pep flakes/ground fennel.
The first MC pizza I got, when they first came out, was a revelation. I never knew a frozen pizza could be so good. The crust completely filled the pan and was pressed in, so you got those wonderful crispy outside edges on all four sides. That was years ago, and I've had several since then, and not one has ever been as good as that first one. And unfortunately, this latest one continues that tradition. But it's not all bad. In fact, there's still a lot to like. The toppings are good quality and plentiful (I added mushrooms). The sauce is flavorful without being overpowering and there's enough to match the thick crust so things don't get dry. The crust is the most important part here, and it has a nice bready flavor without being too dry, hard, or sweet, and it's filling without being too dense. The problem, is, there isn't enough of it to fill the pan, so you only get nice crisp sides on 2 sides at the most. Still, flavor wise, this is still one of the better frozen pizzas on the market, it's just not as good as it could be (or used to be). Final score 7/10.
But why is it that I don’t find this pizza interesting to eat or is it only me😩😩😩
way better toppings quality than the original totinos pizza
Buddy's out of Detroit invented the Detroit pan pizza...
I had never heard of them living 15 years in Cincinnati, but I love Jets for take-out, but I never really shopped at Meijer.
Bought there for $12.99
I made sure it looked golden before I pulled it out. I let it it sit in the pan for about 5 to 10 minutes before pulling out to cut to help retain it shape. I had the cheese and cut to early and the sides flattened out a little.
Amazing crust, great sauce, cheese is authentic Wisconsin Brick. Great hot and then both cold the next day and also reheated.
This makes Detroit Motor City look silly. Haven't tried Buscemi's Detroit yet, so I can't compare. I will say this is better than the Chicago deep dish frozens as well.
10/10 have bought four now. My go to thin is Home Run Inn for context there. Native Chicagoan.
Sprinkled a little dried basil and pepper flakes, wanted to keep it unchanged as much as possible. This is one of the best frozen pizzas I’ve had. First time trying Screamin Sicilian, it won’t be my last. Solid 9/10
My grocer just got Buddy’s Detroit Style deep dish, first time I heard of it…searched for some reviews and y’all sang its praises so I can’t wait to get my hands on them.
Some others I’ve had:
CPK BBQ chicken
CPK white spinach
Italpizza wood fired margherita
Italpizza wood fired pepperoni
Amy’s margherita
Digiorno’s croissant crust pepperoni
Digiorno’s cheese stuffed crust
One of the best frozen pizzas I've had. 9/10
The sauce is bright and fresh tomato-y, pleasantly salted. You notice it on this pizza. It's not cooked to oregano ketchup or tomato paste with an old jar of Italian seasoning diluted with water. It tastes like what you'd get from a Neopolitano style place on their margarita pizza.
The pepperonis cup and have a quality flavor. I'm a sucker for cuppers and these are nicely well rounded in flavor too and not overly greasy.
Cheese has a solid mozz taste and good texture.
The pop of basil was a great choice here. It ties the previous 3 ingredients together and compliments each one individually and harmoniously as a team.
Crust is solid but this is the only place I think it could be even better. I ate the crust ends so it's not like I'm knocking it. I'd like the inside of the ends to be a little chewier and airier. Maybe a slightly longer proofing or less air worked out when stretching? Maybe a little more yeast character?
I'm curious to try the oil in a sheet pan thing on their instructions and since this pizza is only $9 reg price at Walmart I will definitely get again to do it. This is a fantastic pizza at $9.
