I built a free, open source, local stem separator (splits songs into vocals, drums, bass, and more)

I wanted a way to split songs into separate stems (vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano, other) to help my kids learn their instruments by ear. The tools that do this all wanted an account, an upload, and a subscription, and I wasn't keen on sending our music to someone's server just to pull it apart. So I built something that runs entirely on your own machine, and it's turned into a real project.

It's called StemDeck. You drop in a file (MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, even an MP4 video) or paste a YouTube or SoundCloud link, and it separates the track locally using Demucs, Meta's open source model. From there you get a browser-based, DAW-style mixer where you can mute and solo any stem, adjust levels, loop a section, and export individual stems or a custom mix. It also detects BPM and key, and has a click track that follows the actual song for practicing.

A few features I'm proud of:

You can paste a whole YouTube playlist and it queues every track. There's a real import queue you can reorder and cancel, and it survives a restart. YouTube and SoundCloud both work, single tracks or playlists.

You can also open it from your phone. Flip on network access and it shows a QR code you scan to reach a proper touch-friendly mobile interface, while the actual processing stays on your computer. Nothing touches the cloud.

It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and there's a Docker image for anyone self-hosting.

It's completely free and open source (Apache-2.0), with no account, no telemetry, and no monetization of any kind, no ads, no subscription, nothing. It's picked up around 2,000 GitHub stars and 13,000+ downloads in about two months, entirely word of mouth.

Honest caveats: it's still alpha, so expect rough edges, and while separation quality is genuinely good for open source, it won't beat the paid cloud services on really dense mixes. For practice, remix prep, and experimenting it holds up really well.

GitHub (downloads and source): https://github.com/stemdeckapp/stemdeck

Happy to answer any questions. I'm the developer.

Mudvayne, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot or any other karaoke metal bangers? I’m gonna throw down Saturday and probably shock the bar.

Eh yeah get a few in me and some other stuff I stop to care about my environment. I will probably get turned down if it is too heavy of a request but the bartenders love when I show face. Them early 40s - mid 40s type fellas. I’ve done Break Stuff actually fairly well I was told and have a video. But I truly want to see if I can get to 10% of Chad Gray screaming. I also love the emo/metal chicks who do go to this establishment. Idk should I just do Break Stuff? Know it by heart.

Great duet song suggestions

I've been complemented by women for my voice and they've asked if they could duet with me. When I ask them "how about a whole new world? Aladdin ST", they take a 180 on me

So other than Picture by Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, or Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, what other great duet songs are out there?

Need a small footprint - looking at Ikarao and Seratone

First off I live in a small NYC apartment and we don't have much space. I used to love to do private room karaoke but with a child it's harder to go out so changed to a home set up plan. I have the FIFINE mics recommended here and had been using them through a bass amp, not great, I know, but don't have room for more equipment and already had the amp for my bass. I see some recommendations for Ikarao portable machines and now I see Seratone is available for sale and neither would take up too much space. I currently have a Sonos system for my home theater, all older pieces, a playbar, play:1 and one's connected to an older tv as well. Would the new Seratone make more sense or the Ikarao? I want something that will last a while and not take up much space, originally I did buy a Pyle PA speaker recommended here at some point but something was wrong with it plus i realized I didn't have space for it and I sent it back. Ideally looking to keep it around $300. Thank you.

Review: Seratone karaoke device by New Town - safely sing karaoke through your home audio / TV / home theater / sound bar / vintage Hi-Fi equipment

https://preview.redd.it/rmbhlzhjr7kh1.jpg?width=658&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30f5da02d2c058d5dccd55c67f35574ec8dffcff

TLDR - Shorter review:

I had a lot of fun using the Seratone box for home karaoke. In addition to my original test with the prototype I was able to test out what I consider would be a typical configuration using Seratone for home karaoke, i.e. using Karafun with your existing TV and sound gear.

My setup:

  • Ipad running Karafun and using Airplay to transmit the karaoke to a Smart TV
  • Seratone box connected to Smart TV using ARC HDMI port.
  • Seratone box connected to a cheap Ultimea soundbar (I tried using both the analog and optical connections)
  • Wired Seratone microphone connected to the Seratone box
  • Smartphone connected to Karafun using a QR code to browse the catalog and enter requests into the queue.

Using the Seratone was nice and easy. Very simple controls. Anyone can master it quickly. The reverb works well for your voice and gives a good karaoke experience. Everything you need to get connected quickly was included. The included wired microphone was very good. It worked very well with Karafun.

Those are the pros, now some cons:

The price - Seratone is for people with an expensive sound system who want to leverage it for home karaoke. If you have a cheap soundbar or sound system it wouldn't be cost effective.

Other things:

  • The manual I had was a draft and could be clearer.
  • The reverb is global across both mics.
  • The included mic cable is adequate but isn't totally kink-free.
  • No tone controls.

I consider these things minor when using it.

If you want more info, Seratone’s Kickstarter website has a whole lot more detailed info.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/seratone/seratone-karaoke-studio-quality-with-your-existing-speakers

The Seratone official website

Bottom Line: When you consider everything that comes with the Seratone box in this Kickstarter package, I think it’s a good value for a quality karaoke experience. I recommend it.

Longer Review:

This longer review is a follow up to an earlier post. I was able to review a final production unit after reviewing a prototype.

My original review is here and I reposted some of it below.

https://www.reddit.com/r/karaoke/comments/1q5oibt/exciting_news_for_2026_a_solution_to_safely_sing/

From my original review:

People come to this Reddit group all the time asking how to sing karaoke through their home audio system.  By default these people don’t have the necessary knowledge or gear to do this. And because of the variables involved it would be difficult to adequately instruct someone to do this safely. Even with the gear and some knowledge people would still have to experiment on their home audio gear to get the proper settings. Not an ideal situation.

If you follow my comments here I’m pretty consistent about not singing karaoke through home audio gear. My usual response is “Home audio gear was never designed to handle the audio peaks generated when singing. You risk damaging your home audio gear”

Seratone could be the solution for people who want to safely sing karaoke using their home audio gear.

I gave the prototype a thorough review. It sounds good, is easy to use, and I pushed it to the maximum to see if I could blow out any of my home audio gear. And I really tried. Even pointing the microphones directly at the speakers to create feedback. In every case the device did a great job to limit the audio peaks.

I tested the prototype with a TV’s internal speakers, sound bars, vintage home hi-fi stereo system, even computer speakers.

Follow up:

I had a lot of fun using the Seratone box for home karaoke. In addition to my original test I was able to test out what I consider would be a typical configuration using Seratone for home karaoke, i.e. using Karafun with your existing TV and sound gear.

  • Smartphone connected to Karafun using QR code to browse the catalog and enter requests into the queue.

The draft manual I had wasn’t finalized and I needed a little more clarity for this type of configuration.. The one thing about using the ARC HDMI port configuration is you must use external speakers like a soundbar or home theater system. ARC sends audio out from the TV. The Seratone takes the karaoke music coming from the TV and mixes it with the microphones to output the final audio to your soundbar or home theater system. Once I got that straight the setup was pretty easy.

Using the Seratone was nice and easy. Very simple controls. Anyone can master it quickly. The reverb works well for your voice and gives a good karaoke experience.

I tried both the analog Aux and the digital Optical connections. Both worked well although I think the optical connection for my setup gave a slightly cleaner audio for the karaoke music.

Karafun worked great. Using my smartphone to browse the catalog and add songs to the queue was easy.

Now that I gave the pros, now some cons:

The biggest one is price - Seratone is for people with an expensive sound system who want to leverage it for home karaoke. If you have a cheap soundbar or sound system it wouldn't be cost effective.

When I evaluated the prototype I gave a lot of feedback about areas that needed work. And to their credit, they really listened to my critique. In the end they spent more time and money making a quality product than cutting corners.

Other things:

  • The manual I had was a draft and could be clearer. I know this will be addressed. To their credit their website has some good videos on it's features and how to use it.
  • The reverb is global across both mics.
  • The included mic cable is adequate but isn't totally kink-free.
  • No tone controls.

I consider these things minor when using Seratone.

Bottom Line: For people who want to safely use their home audio equipment for a quality home karaoke solution they definitely need to check out Seratone. I recommend it.

If you want more info, Seratone’s Kickstarter website has a whole lot more detailed info.

Some additional info

The Kickstarter package comes with a very nice set of accessories:

  • Seratone Karaoke Interface
  • 1 x Premium Microphone (Metal)
  • XLR Cable (15’ / 4.5m)
  • HDMI Cable (5’ / 1.5m)
  • Optical Cable (10’ / 3.0m)
    • ( FYI - make sure you take the protective caps off the ends of the optical cable!!  lol )
  • USB-C Charging Cable (5’ / 1.5m)
  • USB-C Charging Brick

I thought all the accessories were a nice touch. You have everything you need to get up and running quickly.

I understand If they get to $150,000 in pledges from the Kickstarter they will include a two-month free subscription to KaraFun Premium, another nice touch.

About the microphone that comes with the package:

Initially I mistakenly dismissed the included wired Seratone microphone as something cheap New Town included, but after talking with New Town and inspecting the microphone closer this is a quality custom microphone. The microphone was custom made for New town by a company named Carol. They sell something similar on Amazon for over $100 and it has good reviews. The mic is very well made, no handling noise, and has good sound quality. Similar look to my Sennheiser E835 but also includes an on/off switch.

Here is a good youtube video comparing the Seratone mic to a SM58

Ikarao/KaraFun Dual Screen

I recently bought a Ikarao Shell S1 and was looking to connect it to my TV for a karaoke party. When I connect it to the TV via HDMI, it just mirrors what's on the Ikarao screen, whether it's the full screen lyrics or the split search/lyrics view.

Does anyone know of any ways to connect this to a TV so that only the lyrics display on the TV, and the Ikarao screen only shows the search?

Help with beginner setup using stereo sound system + notebook

Hello. Me and my friends usually come together and sing in our homes, but we usually borrow a setup. We have a birthday coming up in a month and I wanted to start gearing up my own little karaoke corner, but I'm not sure how.

I own this Samsung giga blast stereo system, it has one microphone entrance.

I also own a notebook (running debian 13) that I intend to connect to YouTube initially. Probably plugged on the TV for a bigger screen.

I'm looking to buy a microphone. But I'm also looking for tips on improving it on a budget. Specially a way to connect an extra microphone.

Is there something I'm missing? What should be my priorities for a fun low cost family gathering party?

I appreciate any help.

Karafun vs. Sound Choice

I've been singing karaoke for about five years and, to my ear, Karafun tracks tend to sound closer to the original arrangements than anyone else's. But just within the past few months, I've spoken with two different KJs who say they prefer Sound Choice. (One implied I only preferred Karafun because it was "what I'm used to.")

Which app do people prefer--Karafun, Sound Choice, or something else? Does anyone think Sound Choice's tracks sound closer to the original arrangements than Karafun's? What am I not hearing? For those who prefer Sound Choice, why?

(One Shot) Karaoke Video Generator for Software Savvy Users [Python CLI]

Key Links

Project: https://github.com/NBPub/karaoke_vid_gen#karaoke-video-generator

Demonstration: https://nbpub.github.io/karaoke_vid_gen/

Background

I've been developing a project over the last few months for my purposes and recently started the documentation and publishing process. It should be good to go for general users, and viable for anyone who is comfortable with using their terminal, Python, and fine-tuning their creations. I've used it to make over 30 videos for me and my friends as it's been developing.

AI (Claude Code) was used to develop this work. However, it is much more than a "make me a karaoke video maker" prompt and result. I put a decent amount of effort into the design, features, documentation and the example webpage.

I'm not a part of this community, but I read through the pinned posts and figured this is worth sharing. The code is open-source and free-to-use, but the process requires some user effort. If you want to try it out, please read beyond the quickstart and look at the Installation and Usage documentation.

https://github.com/NBPub/karaoke_vid_gen/blob/main/docs/Installation.md#installation https://github.com/NBPub/karaoke_vid_gen/blob/main/docs/Usage.md#usage

Motivation

Songs I want to sing are not available on YouTube, and many songs I like to sing seem like they are altered (sped up/down, weird instrumentals, etc . . .). I wanted to make videos that I could upload to YouTube. It seems that as long as I don't want to monetize my uploads, there is no issue with the copyright flags that accompany my videos.

Boring Details

see documentation on the linked GitHub for specifics. visual design is meant to be bare bones and suited to what I want. contributions, comments, and recommendations can be made through GitHub.

Call to Community

I honestly don't know who can put in the effort to use this. As I've mentioned, comfort with the terminal is recommended, along with Windows+CUDA (Linux should work). If you fit into my niche, it could be a really fun and useful tool for you, especially if your songs aren't availble on YouTube. And if you end up using it, I'd love to hear any feedback you have. As I mention in the repo, I am happy with the visual design of my work, but I will happily add links to any forks that extend its use.

Hosted a 7 hour house karaoke party ... here are my observations.

I find these kinds of posts useful when others do it so I thought I would contribute my own experience.

I hosted a karaoke party that started at 7pm and ended around 2:15am. There were lots of "pre-gaming" for testing with my immediate family before people started arriving.

For software I used KaraFun Pro v3 using the Integral catalog. That way I had access to more songs and since it was not in a commercial venue, I had no worries about licensing. I only had to resort to YouTube 2 or 3 times over 120 songs that we performed.

I also used my own software called StageKit Lightworks which controls the old school Rock Band Stage Kit lights, strobe and fogger. I had it modified so I was running three RGB light pods and a fog machine. Fog was kind useless between the A/C and the overhead fans not letting it spread enough. But the lights were cool I think.

The laptop was a 16" Lenovo Legion Pro i5 in high performance mode. It ran for over 20 hours (before during and after) without missing a beat or overheating. Very happy there.

The video came out of the laptop via HDMI to a Samsung 75" TV with a splitter so I had audio out via optical to a Polk sound bar with discrete bass unit. Again, house party so this was more than loud enough.

The singing was done through a JBL PartyBox 320 that was only used for the mics. I used two JBL PartyBox wireless mics. For a third mic I used a Behringer XM8500 XLR mic with a Cable Free Guitar UHF wireless system (this is life changing if you hate XLR cables). So three wireless mics. The PartyBox speaker sounds great but it definitely lacks the "auto tune" ability of a mixer. I think that's going to be my next investment. Something to put between the mics and the speaker to improve voice quality.

Everyone loved the set up. Since I was using KaraFun Pro I printed a couple of QR codes plus had the QR code on screen. I made a custom logo and had it displayed on screen. And had the scrolling banner. Worked out great.

The only gripe, and really, it's a minor gripe to be expected...all three microphones starting losing power around the 4.5 hour mark. The receivers from JBL and CFG never ran out of power. But the mics did. Luckily since I had three I was able to charge two while one was being used and they charge pretty fast. So it worked out.

I'm not a paid advertiser for anybody. But I do recommend KaraFun for no frills set up. It really just works. I love my JBL PartyBox 320 and I use it a lot for music listening and it's loud as hell with good battery life. But it's also essential as a separate PA for karaoke with the wireless mics. And my latest addition is the Cable Free Guitar UHF wireless system that lets you convert an XLR microphone into a wireless system. Really was surprising how well it worked.

I’m the worst karaoke singer in my friend group and it’s keeping me from singing

For some context I’m 26m and have met my husband 4 years ago and he’s an amazing singer I’m very supportive of him and will continue to support him

We met our friends at karaoke spots near us and we always have a great time they’re such amazing singers yet I always get discouraged if I try to go sing because I’m either not on their level or I just feel discouraged going on stage

This is not a jealousy post I’m genuinely wondering how I get better at karaoke I want to be able to sing with everyone but I just feel like I’m not good at it

Free drinks for life, but you HAVE to sing one of these songs live. Deal?

Hypothetical scenario: Someone offers to pay your entire bar tab for the rest of the night, but the catch is you HAVE to sing one spooky classic in front of the crowd. Which track gets you those free drinks? Would you sing an easy song? Or would you choose a song that you know you will crack up at the high note and do it just to get the crowd squinching? 🍻💸

My Karaoke setup and YT advice

A lot of living room karaoke in my home and I'm often asked to host for others. I have two Mackie ThumpGo and ProFX10GO (all with battery backups) Wireless Phenyx Pro mics and output to a four headphone Amp as well (for the quieter nights 😊) Karaoke tracks from my Chromecast to my mixer. Overall this setup has worked great for a long time. Everyone would add to the YT queue from their phone and songs would be had late into the night. Recently YT has completely changed how the queue works and I'm struggling to understand the changes. Any advice would be appreciated.

fun rock/rap/soul songs without super long instrumental?

The other night me and my friend destroyed You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine by Lou Rawls and Peg by Steely Dan. They were both so fun to sing especially the backup. But aside from that I’m one of those guys who sings the same songs every time!

Seperate compressor from the mixer

My mixer Yamaha - MG6X - does not come with a compressor and it is too late to return. When I sing, the mic work as intended but when any female singer, it cause clipping. So the solution is to lower the gain or, I think, to have the source compressed. Can I buy a seperate compressor? My set up is Yamaha MG6X and Shure SM58.
