Central Florida: mango unwatered for 1 month in drought.

How should I move forward? Is the tree salvageable?

This is a 2 year old Carrie Mango. It’s dropped all old leaves and its fresh branches are shriveled up.

I’ve watered and placed the plant in a cooler and less light intense area. Technically, I should fertilize it today but I think that’s a bad idea given the current stress.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts or advice. The person watching the house while I was away didn’t think the pots needed water because they were exposed to the elements.

DIY Fruit Picker

I live in south Florida and it's Mango season, but all the mangoes you can reach are usually gone when walking around the neighborhood.
They tend to hang over the public sidewalks and roads.
So I invented this and it's extendable. They use the pole to wash RVs. It worked pretty well the first time trying it!

I used a old fishing net, extendable pole from homedepot, and a gardening tool. You just place the tool right over the fruit you want and pull down. In one day we got all of this for free! 🥭

Avocado mango

Any idea on IDing this mango?

Never seen a skin like this before on a mango. The flesh is buttery, you can’t peel them you have to scoop out with a spoon.

The birds and iguana’s love them lol.

I have two varieties this year from two different mango trees. This is the first year my smaller tree produced fruit. It’s the one on the right.

3 on the left are possibly from the Haden / Kent / Tommy Atkins family. 4 on the right look more like Glenn / Valencia Pride / possibly Carrie type.

Baby Julie’s first ever harvest

First time fruiter, still holding 9 more, Julie is not a heavy producer in south Florida compared to when it’s grown in Jamaica but it stays small and honestly grows really well. I will be pruning to open up the canopy for light and airflow after I harvest the rest.

Any idea what variety of mango this is?

From my friends yard, it produces a bunch of these little mangos that are about the size of a baseball. They are by far the sweetest mango i’ve ever had and are almost spicy(??) when they are very ripe. They have very little fiber. It’s probably a long shot but though it was worth asking.

Variety Planting Suggestions

Hi Mango folk! I'm located in central Florida (Lakeland area), and am a long time appreciator of our Glenn and Valencia Pride (or similar - we inherited them with no names) mango trees that have recently been nuked by the intense cold this past winter. Thankfully, they will make a recovery; but it will take time that we won't be there to see.

We've recently purchased a new home with plenty of land for fruit trees, and I'm trying to decide which varieties of mango to plant. I'd like to limit it to no more than 3-4 mango trees, as we'll be swimming in excess fruit quickly once everything matures. I was filling my freezer with at least a couple gallons every season with just the two.

We have a long front drive with zero landscaping. I'd like to plant one "centerpiece" tree that we'll let grow as large as it would like in the middle of the front yard, then a handful of mango and other fruit trees (avocado/citrus) lining the driveway that we'll keep around ~15ft for easier harvests.

As we loved the glenn and valencia pride at our old house, I'm envisioning a valencia pride as that centerpiece larger tree, and glenn as one of our driveway liners. To add to the glenn, I'm looking at a sweet tart and honey kiss.

I'm thinking the glenn>sweet tart>honey kiss should nicely finish harvest as the next begins, with the valencia pride overlapping in there a bit.

If our goal is sweet/fruity, fiberless or low fiber fruit on cold hardy trees, how does this plan sound? Does anyone have other recommended varieties we should consider swapping something out for?

Also - here's a free pic of my dog Finn waiting for some mango to fall last year 😉

---

Update with current grove plans (already over my 3-4 mango plan haha):

Valencia Pride (centerpiece)
Glenn
Coconut Cream
Fruit Punch
M4
Brogdon Avo
Owari Satsuma
Meyer Lemon
Persian Lime

Growing mango from seed

Hello! So I’ve planted my mango seed in a container and placed a bag over it and it’s under my grow light. Do I need to remove the bag often?

First Mango hunt of the year.

My wife and I went around the neighborhood picking mangos off the trees that’s hanging over the public walking paths. Are these going to be any good?

Most of the ripe ones were already gone 😭

I pruned a little under a third of the tree earlier this year, and it produced more fruit than in any previous year.

What it this ?

I often find this in atulfos. Impossible to spot from outside and ruining most of the fruit. Anybody knows what this is? Is there a way to avoid this?

Help with new Mango tree

Hey,

I recently purchased a grafted Cogshall mango tree from a nursery and I live in a less than ideal climate (Northern Canada). After giving it a few weeks to settle, I transplanted from a nursery pot to a ~5 gallon with a mix of potting soils, coco coir and perlite. Since then the older set of leaves have started to brown and wrinkle, and even some of the newer leaves are getting some holes/rips in them. I've tried to show both issues in the pictures, and also note that the leaves are more on the yellower side than what the pictures show (iphone has a tendency to oversaturate colours). Additionally, there has not been any new growth yet.

I wanted to get people's opinion on what the cause is likely to be, and what I should do about it.

Transplant stress - If this is the case, then I should just stay the course, make sure it is watered appropriately and gets plenty of sun.

Cold stress/wet roots - We have been getting a mix of 15-25C daytime highs, with 5-10C nighttime lows. So it's possible that it hasn't been enjoying the cold temperatures. In addition to this, we've had some rainy weather which hasn't allowed the soil to get much for wet/dry cycles. One thing I could do is bring it back inside into a grow tent with lights until the weather gets nicer. Or, just keep it under an overhang to allow for it to dry better and wait out the colder temps.

Unsuitable soil - My mixture may have been too heavy or possibly not the right nutrient mixture. To fix this I would have to pick up some new more appropriate soil and re-transplant it. Maybe with a different pot type which allows for better air flow.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice that you can provide.
