My keyboard bit the dust, not really sure what to do
It just stopped working suddenly. The lights went out, it stopped registering input, even if I restarted my PC and disconnected the keyboard and such I could only get the lights to blink for a few seconds. What do I do? I figure I may need to replace the controller if anything, but I took it out and it looks fine. I'm not sure where to get new ones anyway. It's such a shame, it's in great shape otherwise. Haven't even had to boltmod it.
Has anyone seen the old style keyboard covers?
Am I misremembering or did the PC industry used to have hard shell plastic keyboard protectors?
I ordered a protective cover from Unicomp and I'm a little disappointed. The site doesn't have photos but I assumed it was going to be a hard shell. I could not find the box anywhere after it said delivered, then I found an envelope in my mailbox. "How did they get it crammed in there?"
Turns out it's a flimsy plastic wrap https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/794a11acb04f.JPG I needed something for daily on+off because work gets so much dust and I'm sick of needing to wipe down my keyboard in addition to my desk. I could have used a towel for this.
In my mind, I thought I was getting a clear solid plastic cover that is form fit to the keyboard shape.
If anyone knows where to order a keyboard cover, I'm in the market.
finally said screw it and ordered myself my dream kb
been wanting a model m since i was literally a single digit age child in the 00s, first getting into retro computers and mechanical keyboards,
spent months window shopping on various keyboards, but found theres just too many silly gimmick options of switches, with just varying levels of questionable quality and reliability now. and im an old man in my mid-late 20s that was really into kbs as a teen, but fell out of and got back into it, so idk and idc abt any of this silly "thocky" "creamy" clone switch nonsense lmfao
when i found out that cherrys have basically just as bad quality control and manufacturing as everyone else now (except still charge cherry prices) when i was looking to get another plain jane blue or green board, i just decided to say screw it and get the boomer old man buckling spring board of my dreams
now if only i hadnt heard horror stories on their shipping lmfao, but its a good exercise in patience, and whats another few weeks after over a literal decade right?
and i guess i shouldnt say DREAM keyboard, but yk, i simply couldnt justify a model f repro, and i think this one might already push my wife's patience lmfao
How to fix spacebar rattling?
This is a 1987 Model M SSK. I am on a project to make this board more office friendly. I have already performed floss mod, however the spacebar (still) does this ominous rattling on key release. I am not talking about the click that the spring normally makes. But it's somehow as the bar of plastic resonates or vibrates on top of the flipper or so. The metal "stabilizer" rod seems to be in place and tucked inside the plastic hook on the barrel plate. This rattling also occurs as one gently prods on the side of the spacebar (without actually triggering the key). I made an audio recording though this is nothing special in terms of model Ms i think. https://drive.google.com/file/d/18k0pIpz61hSKPNEs5RngEuO7ALjpsZ8u/view?usp=sharing
Unicomp Model M mat
Hi, I just wanted to share this since the only post I could find said it was latex:
Unicomp said their mat/blanket in their current production models is made of "liquid silicone rubber."
I have a latex allergy, so I figured this might help others in the same boat or if you are trying to find a replacement and can't order from them. I'm planning on ordering a Mini M soon!
Does anyone know what material was used for the mats in vintage 80s/90s Model Ms?
A happy 45th birthday to the IBM PC and Model F/XT
45 years ago today, on 12th August 1981, the computing landscape changed forever. IBM launched the Personal Computer, the vessel that kickstarted x86's dominance in computing at offices and homes alike. It was, of course, not a feat IBM achieved by itself - the IBM-compatible "clone" market is what helped keep the ecosystem prominent in the long run. But I like to think a big part of its success was its keyboard. Not the perfect layout as most may agree, but certainly a competent, well-built keyboard - the Model F/XT.
In just over day, I managed to scramble together something to celebrate the occasion. Barely in time for it to still be the 12th in my timezone... But nonetheless, a lot of pictures and commentry on the F/XT, where it came from, and what it became. Please enjoy!
Floss mod: Do I need to pull the string off the flipper?
I am about to perform floss modding but cannot find proper guide. I understand that one has to insert a small thread of floss vertically into the spring but it is unclear how that's done: tuck it from top or pull the spring out and put them back together? I fear that if i pull the spring off then i might not be able to get it back on.
Happy 40th Birthday
