Has the NZ second-hand EV market cooled off a bit?

Nearly 2,000 ev listings on trademe, listings seem to be sitting longer, and asking prices feel more reasonable than they were at peak panic.

Am I dreaming or has the market settled a bit since fuelpocalypse? What are others seeing? Interested in your thoughts (and feelings).

How to identify whether 400V or 800V chargers?

PlugShare looks like a great resource, but checking chargers nearby, I can't see anywhere on their listings whether they're 400V or 800V architecture, so how are we supposed to know?

As I understand this is an important piece of information to know in advance, as 800V vehicles must convert 400V supply before it can be used, and that conversion process can impose a hefty charge speed reduction.

Going to the wrong charger for your vehicle might mean the difference between waiting 15 min and waiting maybe an hour.

So how are we supposed to tell?

EVs could 'reshape' the entire energy system - report

"If 30 percent of New Zealand's fleet were V2G-enabled, the combined output would be comparable to all of New Zealand's power stations running at full capacity."

What kind of benefit/payback would you need to use your EV battery for grid support?

2026 Mazda 6e: NZ pricing confirms new EV will undercut Tesla, BYD

$58,990 + ORC, only top trim Takami available

“Power comes from a 78kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery paired with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 190kW of power and 290Nm of torque.

Mazda claims the rear-wheel drive sedan can travel up to 560km on the WLTP cycle, while DC fast charging at up to 195kW can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in around 24 minutes.”

Zeekr 7X RWD

Signing for one tomorrow.

Would you get the dealership to tint the windows or take it to a local shop?

Are the deep dish rubber mats worth it or just get the same from Ali?

I hear the paint protection is cheap and easy to apply at home and is a dealership rort. Is it?

What else need I consider before signing my firstborn away?

Built a Kiwi EV marketplace because Trade Me keeps showing "Engine Size: 0cc" — it's almost live but looking for honest feedback on what listings should actually show

Update: some of the quick win suggestions were amazing and I could quickly sort them

  • charger type
  • v2L possible
  • if a charging cable was included was included
  • the trim package
  • battery indicator
  • number of seats

So thank you ALL this has been awesome!

Hi there, long-time lurker, MG4 driver for a couple of years now (came from a RAV4 genuinely like going from a tractor to a starship). I've pre-messaged the mods so hopefully this is all good...

Long story short, when we bought the MG4 it sort of cascaded into solar, heat pump hot water, ebike-curious, the whole electrification spiral some of you will know. I kept thinking there should just be one site with an ecosystem slant for all of this rather than hunting across half the internet, and TradeMe clearly isn't built for EVs. The "Engine Size: 0cc" thing really bugged me.

Welp I figured it was worth a shot so I've build a marketplace. It's called Electric Dreams (https://electricdreams.co.nz). It's free to list, and the "plan" one day is to make money via advertising referrals to ecosystem stuff like solar and home charging rather than charging sellers but that's a long way down the track. Right now I'm focused on whether it's actually any good and can I get people to list.

I'd really value any honest feedback on the listing pages specifically and calculator. I'm pretty sure I've got the math right... A few things I'm genuinely unsure about:

What info do you actually look for when shopping a used EV? Battery health is the obvious one but in what format? SOH percentage? Bars? A degradation chart? Something else? I want to get this right rather than guess.

What's annoyed you most about looking at EVs on TradeMe or Facebook Marketplace (other than market place being the wild west)? I've got my own list (no charging info, no range fields, dealers using stock photos), but I'd love to hear what other people hit.

Anything you'd want to see that nobody currently shows or even info that might tip people over from curious to intentioned.

Happy to take rough feedback, brutal feedback, "this is dumb" feedback. Genuinely trying to build something useful for people who actually own and shop EVs in NZ, not just a clone of an existing platform.

Cheers - and thanks to the mods for letting me post!

Insurance

Who are people using for BYD Insurance for new 2025/26 cars and what are your annual premiums?

I've been calling around and all are above $1400/year for a BYD Atto 3 with excess free glass cover and hire cover.

BNZ was almost $2000 😭

Mazda 6e pricing and release date - call from local dealer

Just got a call from my local Mazda dealership with some details on the 6e. I didn't get a chance to write down so it's all relying on my memory but...

$58,990+ORC Expected end of August/start of Sept. They also mentioned something about a 3 month order timeframe, and. $1000 refundable deposit to secure.

Also they mentioned only 1 trim for NZ.

Geely EX2 on its way to NZ - I think this is big news

According to the Geely NZ website, the EX2 is "Coming Soon". This is big news, especially if it is priced as well as I suspect it will be.

- RWD

- Liquid-cooled battery (unlike BYD Atto 1)

- Multi-link rear suspension

- A 5-star ANCAP safety rating is "expected" by Geely

- Expected to have around 320 km of WLTP range (according to The Driven)

-It has a frunk!

The Geely EX2 will rival EVs like the MG4 Urban, and the upcoming GAC Aion UT.

Experiencing EV ownership

Hey all, apologise if this has been asked before but i’m unable to find anything around this.

We’re currently in search of our next car (will be a used car) and was wondering, is there a way to fully experience EV ownership without committing and purchasing one?
Like somewhere that does a rental or lease for a week or two or even a month with all relevant accessories eg charger.
That way we can experience it and see if it would suit our needs and lifestyle.
I’ve checked a few mainstream car rental companies such as Budget and Go rentals but it appears the EV’s are fully booked for the next few months?
We’re located in Wellington.

Thanks in advance

Recommendation for new vehicle

Hey Team,

Looking for a company car which will be our first ev. Preferably new as I assume this is going to give us the best battery life/range as opposed to something a few years old?

Potentially around 150kms per day. Can install a charger at the office and a staff member will take home overnight so potential to charge at home also.

Some days will be 400-500kms so need something with decent range.

Rightfully or wrongfully I'm not too keen on the BYD or other lesser known brands, but have been looking at the Kia's (and a lesser extent the Ford Mustang). Budget - maybe around $80k mark give or take. Any suggestions?

Anyone got a 6+ seater Tesla?

So I’m not a Tesla fan, but the options for 5+ seaters are pretty limited. An EV9 would be nice, but out of our budget.

Just wondering if the 3rd row is big enough for kids-teenagers?

Thanks

Toyota New Zealand opens order books for first all-electric Hilux ute

Pricing is to be announced later this month. However, I expect it to be around $90k based on Australian pricing.

The Hilux BEV is powered by a 52.2kWh battery, with up to 315km of NEDC range.

It will be offered in SR and SR5 grades.

The NEDC range of the cab chassis model is 245km.

The Hilux BEV can tow 2000kg braked.

150 kW DC (10-80% in 30 min)

10 kW AC

So, do you think this is going to sell at all?

Byd shark 6

Tradie here, looking of anyone has some real world experience with long term towing on the byd ute.

Regularly travel in excess of 300km per day up and down country (work in a dairy support industry) Im getting a bit sick of my van enough to pull the plug on it. Will be towing roughly 1t plus the trailer every 2-3 days, sometimes daily.

Will wait for the 2L obviously as large engine should theoretically down to full consumption down when towing and extra capacity (3.5t vs 2.5t) is always good.

As an aside, I do realise my fuel bill will be greater than my existing van but Im starting to dislike the constant chemicals Im breathing daily.
