Is Class Pass bankrupt?

I am a Pilates studio and for the first few months our direct deposit paychecks from Class Pass were always on time every other Tuesday. The past 3 or 4 payrolls I have had to reach out to Class Pass to receive payment from them and every one has been late. They still owe us one paycheck even.

Any other studios having the same problem? Is it time to remove all our classes from Class Pass?

Lagree style reformer in Surrey

Are you interested in doing Lagree? I’m researching whether to open a Lagree studio in Surrey (like hardcore reformer Pilates). Curious who’s familiar with this style - it’s unclear to me how much of a marketing / awareness challenge I’ll have with Lagree.

Thanks!

Becoming a Trainer

Hi everyone! I’m new to this group and I’m new to pilates in general. There is a new Pilates studio opening near me and I’m debating going through the training process and becoming a trainer there. I fully see how it may seem ridiculous for me to jump from not doing Pilates to getting certified to train it, but I think it could be a good fit for me and would love to hear what other trainer’s thoughts are on working as an instructor.
Below is some additional info:
-I really enjoy teaching and I am good at putting together activities and plans for a wide range of subject matter and I’m well-versed with helping people from many different backgrounds and in many different age groups.
-While I have no experience with reformer Pilates and would need to learn everything, I have been going to Burn Boot Camp, which does a variety of weight training and HITT training exercises for the last three years and I am in great physical shape
-I would complete an 18 month training course
-I am looking for a job that will allow me to work for only a couple of hours a week while my kids are at school or maybe only one evening a week because I am the primary care caregiver to my kids
-I am looking to have a job for a sense of identity and being able to combined my interest of physical fitness with my love of teaching, income is not an important aspect

50hr cert or not worth it for my goals?

I am living in a more rural area of SEAsia. I will be moving to a major US city in 4 months.

I’ve been a dedicated fitness student for years (8 years Barre3 3x/wk, 3 years reformer Pilates 3x/wk, yoga and mat Pilates weekly). My current Pilates studio in Asia does not do any instructor training.

A US studio is doing a 50hour training retreat in SEAsia and my total out of pocket would be $1000 USD (including travel and all accommodations). I did verify this is Mat levels 1-3, includes anatomy, and discusses contraindications. This training is not a National Pilates Certification Program but I would get a certificate from the studio. The studio is under the Yoga Alliance and OHYA (for hot yoga) so yoga teachers can get CE hours for this training as well.

I am not in a place to pay more than $1500 for training. When I return to the US, would this certification be taken seriously/ is it worth the money?

My goal is to work at a gym (Golds, NYSC, Equinox, private boutique gyms) or other niche studios (SolidCore, PureBarre, boutique studios) parttime.

Thank you!

New to Reddit + new Pilates instructor looking for advice 🫶

I’ve been practicing Pilates for the last 4 years and honestly knew after my first class that I wanted to become an instructor someday.

Pilates has helped me so much. Mentally, physically, and confidence-wise. I played competitive soccer for 15 years, so finding movement that feels good on my joints while still challenging me has been huge.

I recently became Mat Pilates certified (!!) moved to Boston, so I’m still building community here. Right now, I have friends and family back home in CA who want to take virtual classes with me so I can get reps in and practice teaching, which I’m really excited about.

I work full-time in corporate, so balancing a career while pursuing teaching on the side is definitely a new challenge (but one I’m really excited about).

I know a lot of confidence comes with reps and time teaching, but I’d love advice from instructors who remember the early days. If you could go back to when you first started this journey what would you do differently or one piece advice you would give to yourself?

Trying to give myself grace while learning a totally new skill and building community in a new city. Would love any advice from people who’ve been here before 💛

Reformer Class Planning?!

Hi pilates people!💓 I’ve been teaching reformer pilates for a few weeks now and teach 3-4 days a week. I feel like I’m spending SO much time class planning and it’s honestly draining me. How are we efficiently class planning? How often do you reuse a class flow? Any hacks?!

Has anyone else noticed Pilates getting way more attention recently?

A few years ago Pilates barely came up in fitness conversations unless someone was already really into wellness or studio classes. Now it feels like it’s everywhere social media, home workouts, even people replacing gym memberships with reformer setups.

I was reading through a discussion earlier where people were comparing different reformer options and PersonalHour got mentioned a couple times alongside some of the bigger names. What surprised me most was how normal home Pilates equipment has become because it used to feel insanely expensive and niche.

Do you think Pilates is becoming a long-term part of mainstream fitness culture, or is this just another trend that’ll cool off eventually?

Are more pilates clients expecting home practice support now

I've been noticing a shift in how some clients approach Pilates recently, where they are not just focused on studio sessions but are asking what they can realistically do at home between classes to stay consistent.

it feels like expectations are different compared to a few years ago when most people thought the studio was the only structured environment to train in

Many of these questions are not necessarily about advanced training but more simple routines, short sequences, or ways to keep progress on days they are not in class. It sometimes puts instructors in a position where you are balancing structured programming and guidance that goes beyond the studio setting.

Do any of the other instructors here see this as well? And if so, how do you usually handle it in terms of programming or guidance without overwhelming beginners?

I’m also interested if this changes your ideas about consistency of your clients or long-term engagement in classes

Imposter Syndrome Is So Real

This is really more of a rant than anything. I recently started my mat certification through Balanced Body and I only have one more class to go until I am able to test out. I have been teaching family and friends some classes to get in my student teaching. I only just taught my 7th class yesterday and I am just being so hard on myself.

Cognitively I know that learning to teach bodies takes time but I so badly want to be on the other side of the growing pains. I find myself getting overwhelmed with wanting to cue correctly so clients have proper form AND watching their bodies AND making corrections AND counting AND all the things. Then on top of that i’m like well dang maybe i’m just not cut out to be an instructor I guess.

I keep trying to remind myself that it all comes with time and that this is the point of practice and student teaching is to refine. But it still is so uncomfortable!

To all my instructors out there, how long did it take you until you felt comfortable with your style of teaching, and cueing, etc etc?

How to Leave a Instructor Job?

Hi everyone. I have been teaching at a studio for a while now but I am feeling like it is not a great fit for me. How do I approach this situation? Do you give a two weeks notice? Offer to stay until there is a replacement instructor for classes? I think finding a replacement will be a serious challenge as there is already a lack of instructors in the area.

I am also extremely nervous to broach the subject with the owner. Any tips?

What is the cheapest way to get certified while still having good chances of being hired?

I am a ballet dancer and as you probably know we don’t do it for the money! lol

I have been interested in teaching Pilates on the side for a while but it looks like most of the options for certification 5,000 dollars and upwards.

Other studios I have found that don’t require a cert require you take a certain amount of their expensive classes.

What is the cheapest way to get certified while still having good chances of being hired?

I would appreciate any guidance or help anyone can offer to me!

Help with cuing?

Instructors,

Do you spend the entire class cuing your students? If you see everyone is doing the movement accordingly, are you still cuing?

I understand that keeping cues simple is sometimes better and I try to do that. But do I really need to talk the entire time? Whether that be cuing or counting?

Please give tips so I can get better 🙏

Thank you

Cueing for Pelvic Tilts: Finding Nuance Beyond Basic Instruction

Hey fellow Pilates instructors!

I wanted to open up a discussion about cueing pelvic tilts. We all teach them, of course, but I've found that simply saying ''tilt your pelvis'' or ''imprint your spine'' doesn't always get the nuanced engagement we're looking for, especially with beginners or clients with specific postural issues.

I'm always looking to refine language and find new ways to help clients feel the correct movement. Share your best tips and tricks!

wtf are these "digital pilates reformer" studios with no teacher??

one just opened near me in paris. no instructor. just screens and an app. you follow along on a tablet, nobody corrects your form, nobody checks your springs. it's basically a fancy gym with reformers and a screen.

am i the only one who thinks this is kind of insane? bad form on a reformer can genuinely hurt you, especially beginners. and honestly what even is the point of pilates without real instruction?

i'm working on opening my own small studio and seeing this made me feel some type of way. like is the industry really going toward cheap and automated?

please tell me this is just a weird trend and not the future lol

Not teaching mat pilates to the beat / music?

Anyone here NOT do this? Idk… I’m not the biggest fan. A lot of the classes I go to rather than being intentional and controlled the instructor cares more about the beat and music and it ends up feeling like we are flinging our bodies

Anyone have upbeat music but NOT teach to the music / beat

pilates leggings recommendations - where are you shopping?

I just got into pilates and my leggings situation is genuinely tragic lol. Every time I do core work the waistband folds down and I spend half the class fixing it instead of, idk, doing pilates?? been eyeing Lululemon align and Halara ultrasculpt but can't tell if they're worth it or if I'm just gonna grab a $25 Amazon pair and call it a day?

TIA

Position of legs and feet in the roll up

For the roll up in mat Pilates (without a strap) the legs are together and feet are flexed. Are the legs externally rotated with heels together and toes apart? TIA

new Pilates studio opening up by owner who has never attending a Pilates class

A new boutique studio is opening up in my downtown they have been promoting about the is opening for about 2 months now. They’ll be having reformer, mat, and yoga classes. When they posted on their instagram they were looking for instructors I messaged them. The instagram page also has no face tied to it, not that it matters but I just wanted to know who was opening the studio.

Anyway, I got a weird first impression from messaging with them. They wanted me to explain how my previous studio went about paying instructors and I left them on read.

Weeks went by and the asked if I was still interested in teaching, I said yes. Then I was offered the gig with the option of days I could teach. No phone call, no meeting in person, no mock class, they didn’t even ask for my certification…

This past weekend a photo shoot was scheduled with all the instructors and thats when i finally met the owner. I was the first one who showed up and introduced myself and asked her what she was going to be teaching. She answered with, “i don’t teach. I have never taken a pilates class.” She made other comments throughout the day that didnt seem right. Like she doesnt work out. And doesnt attend any fitness studios. She’s never been on a reformer!Im sorry but how are you opening up a studio with ZERO knowledge or experience in anything fitness.

One of the mat instructors that was hired has NEVER taught a class. She got her certification and attends pilates classes regularly but teaching is an entirely different thing. I was 1 of 2 reformer instructors and when I messaged the other instructor she didn’t find anything about this weird.

I decided to politely decline the opportunity because nothing was sitting right with me. None of the other instructors thought anything weird about it. What are your thoughts? I just needed to vent.

opening a small reformer studio - any golden tips?

i've been teaching for a while and seriously thinking about opening my own place. small like 4-5 reformers, small group classes, good vibes.

the teaching part i feel good about but everything else honestly overwhelms me a little.

someone recommended me Momence but tbh i just want something really simple. booking, payments, waitlist, and decent support. that's it. anyone found that?

would love to hear from anyone who's REALLY been through it 🙏

Signed up for 50 hour mat certification ...

This is through my local independent yoga/pilates studio, I know the instructors pretty well and I'm going in with a "just learn a cool new skill" mindset. When I think about how little time 50 hours, it seems CRAZY that I would be allowed to teach after such a short training, but my studio is definitely inferring that will be the case (if we test out of course). Does this bode badly? I've already paid so I'm gonna go through with it, but I'm definitely not assuming I will be teaching after this.
