Is my RYM rating curve too wholesome or just right? 💀

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my current album rating distribution after 272 ratings.

As you can see, I lean on the positive side (most of my ratings are 4.0 and 4.5), and I rarely rate anything below a 3.0 because I usually only listen to stuff I think I'll like.

Also, since I'm from Mexico, I customized my rating descriptions with specific drinks and snacks based on how they feel (from a perfect "Mochaccino" for a 5.0, to a warm coconut Electrolit for a 0.5).

What do you think of the curve? Do I rate too high? Let me know your thoughts!

does anyone else's RYM look like this right now?

I didn't even turn on light mode or anything, it's just completely glitched, and on all my other accounts I had the same problem.

Between “A Day in the Life” and “Starless”, which song is truly the better #1?

I know “Starless” is currently ranked #1 on RYM, but every week it feels like either “A Day in the Life” or “Starless” takes the top spot again.

Data Extraction

Hi all! Long time lurker, first time poster, recent RYM supporter.

I really enjoy rating individual tracks and then averaging out the album from there. Just been looking at ways that I can take the individual tracks which I rate 4 stars or higher and turn that into a playlist. I ideally don’t want to manually click every album I’ve reviewed and thought that I might be able to extract the data somehow… Unfortunately that seems a bit of an ask from what I have found so far.

Has anyone else found a way that this can be done? I feel like the current csv download is just missing that option…

I see the roadmap is available, however have also heard from other members that this is quite a slow process… Any news that someone can share if it is going to be a future implementation and if it is close?

Thanks all!

The Dillinger Escape Plan has a weirdly consistent catalogue, with only 0.22 points between their highest and lowest ranked albums. What other artists are like this?

Top 300 Japanese Music Tracks of All Time (According to RateYourMusic)

Spotify playlist

Imgur spreadsheet for better readability across all devices.

RateYourMusic is a website that enables its users to rate any music they like. Anyone can rate any given track on a scale from 0.5 to 5, and the average ratings are visible to all RYM subscribers. A more recently added feature of RateYourMusic is the song charts, a freely customisable online resource for discovering the best-rated tracks in any genre or period of time, also providing similar charts for each individual artist.

Harboring plans to gather different resources and playlist to allow for better appreciation and analysis of Japanese music of all kinds, I proceeded to compile information from the website. One of the results of these efforts is this compilation of what RYM deems to be most valuable in Japanese music, with heavy emphasis on indie, experimental and underground records but also plenty of classics' representation.

As has been typical of the lists I share, there is no weight given to the number of ratings a track has been given, allowing for more variety in the charts. There is however a minimum of 100 ratings to make the list, enabling certain artists to get in whilst keeping the others out.

How do you feel about the charts? Do they give your favourites a sufficient spotlight?

Above all, take it easy!

Bands that actually deserve their reappraisal?

We've seen bands like Linkin Park and other nu metal rise in score over the past few years, many have argued this revisionism is undeserved and I agree, but what bands have had a drastic reappraisal on RYM that actually deserve said reappraisal? I'll say My Chemical Romance for sure, the reappraisal can also go the other way

edit: artists too, not just bands woops!

Anyone else have that period of time where it feels like you're giving too many 5/5 ratings?

In the past month, the number amount of 5's that I've given has basically skyrocketed, going from a 70-80 amount to now as of most recently 110. Though all these albums feel worthy of 5's, I have no interest in changing scores, I do feel like I've given out too many of those ratings. It makes me think about if I didn't rate previous albums as fairly as I did now, though I can't say if that is true or false.

How I always rated things was "Did I like it? if so, how much?" and depending on my overall vibe + tracklist ratings, that determines my score. But now with how many 5's I've given recently, it makes me think if I have been too nitpicky previously.

Now I'm not bothered by this anymore and rate as I please, no matter how many I do give out, but I came here to ask if anyone else has felt this way before, cause it's funny thinking back on it now.
