I built the mixing tool I wish I had when I was learning audio engineering

I always thought buying better gear would fix my mixes, but what I was really missing was understanding the theory behind why they weren’t working. I built Mozonic to analyze mixes, suggest corrections, and explain the reasoning so you can improve while you mix. I’d love any feedback. www.mozonic.com

Should i keep these mics i thrifted?

I found these in a bundle at a thrift store for a few bucks. I'll have to test to see if they work.

From top to bottom they look like:

Venturer microphone (looks cheap)

RadioShack unidirectional dynamic mic

Nextech

Realistic Omnidirectional

Shure Super 55 Supercardioid Dynamic (really heavy)

(2) 79F158-4 IMP10K

(2) Numark DM-855A 300

A friend gave me a Tascam DP-008 to record myself acoustic or electric guitar and I have a Zoom H6 with the attachable capsules. Are these mics worth keeping and pairing with either of those?

Which Zoom should I get?

I use a Zoom H6 for work (radio). I'm putting together a very compact setup at home. I love the results I get from my Zoom, but don't ever need more than a single XLR input. Can I go with one of the smaller (cheaper) models, or are there quality capabilities of the H6 that are not present on the other models?

What microphones should I use? Lavalier or shotgun?

I'm about to start making short films. The problem is that I won't have people helping me with my projects all the time. So I was thinking about buying a lavalier microphone, maybe the DJI Mic 3 or the Rode Wireless Pro.

Here in Japan, the prices are almost the same. Lavalier microphones would make things easier because I wouldn't necessarily need my friends to help me.

But I know shotgun microphones usually provide better audio quality, and I know I would also need a portable recorder.

If I buy a shotgun mic plus a portable recorder, the total cost would end up being almost the same as getting the DJI or Rode wireless system. But I won't always have friends around to help me.

So I really need some advice on this. If anyone sees this post, I'd appreciate your help.

Thanks for your time.

Digital Recorder that can handle large files and...

Does anyone have a recommendation for a digital recorder that:
- Can record into one, large continuous file. Not a bunch of smaller arbitrarily sized files
- Can record at high bit rates (44k or 48k)
- Has a 3.5mm audio IN

I’m trying to record an entire 2 hr musical performance and turn the songs into discrete tracks.

Amazon has a bunch of these but there are some unknowns with them or they don’t have all the features above.

Any advice is appreciated.

Recommendations for compact recorder capable of true line level 32 bit float recording

I'm after a recorder, as small as possible, solely to record the output of a DJ mixer during events. Typically these mixers feature an unbalanced line level 'rec' output that is fixed (unaffected by changes to the master volume level which may vary considerably across the event). As individual channel sources and gains will still vary and potentially exceed a given threshold, it would be useful if it had 32 bit float recording capability, to be able to plug it in and leave it without having to monitor levels throughout the event / correct any clipping in recordings afterwards. I wouldn't need built-in microphones, though it wouldn't matter if it had some.

I tried a Zoom H1essential (as it was cheap and 32 bit), and updated the firmware to be able to adjust the input gain, but even with this set to 0, the rec output of my mixer overloaded the input. After some further research I discovered that a lot of input sockets marked as being able to take a line level signal are not 'true' line level and that actual line level signals can be too hot for them. It seems like another contender, the Tasam DR-05XP, might struggle in the same way.

I was also looking at the Zoom F3 which features a dedicated line setting which reduces the input level by 20db - is anyone able to confirm that it would be appropriate for this purpose? And as it's considerably more expensive and kind of overkill for this, can anyone recommend any cheaper options that would meet these criteria? I know 32 bit float compact recorders are a fairly recent arrival so what I'm after may not exist yet / the F3 may be the closest thing...

Thanks!

Voice recorder

Sorry if this is the wrong Subreddit but i don’t know where to post this. I have a lot of thoughts (as i assume most people do) and i need to get some of them down / written / said quickly, i don’t always have my phone or a piece of paper or anything to them down. I want a small pocket sized voice recorder that i can keep in my pocket easily and just take out and record a quick note if i need to. Ive done a little looking and i see a lot of $100+ ones and i don’t totally have that budget but if thats what works then i can work with it. Currwntly i use my digital camera and just record a video of the floor while talking and it works fine but then i have to search through any videos i have taken (i go weeks without offloading things from my camera) and it gets a little annoying. Just looking for any suggestions.

Stock Voice Recorder app: Does anyone else sometimes get corrupted voice recordings after they’re successfully saved and played back later?

These occasional voice recordings (.M4A) only seem to get an ‘unplayable’ message when executed from the original file location (and not executed from within the app). I’ve tried using VLC, and a handful of other media players on Windows 10 to play these, but to no avail.

I’ve also tried copying and pasting these unplayable files to cloud storage and accessing them via my iPhone (Google Drive app) and via another laptop I have on Windows 11. Still unplayable, regardless.

On the other hand, the unplayable ones play perfectly fine if played from directly within the Windows 10 Voice Recorder app itself on the original Windows 10 computer I made the recordings on.

Has anyone ever encountered this type of issue?

Shure SM7b inhaling/breathing in in recordings

Like the title says, I am running into an issue of hearing myself breath in during conversation, wanting to limit it in ways that don't involve minimal breathing as it's for a longform (1 hour +) podcast type recording.

Set up is currently

Shure SM7b

Focusrite Scarlet Solo 4th Gen

Triton FetHead in-Line Preamp

(gain at 40% via Focusrite, mic around 3 inches away, diagonal to mouth)

using SteelSeries GG Sonar software with ClearCast Noice Cancelling to remove all background noises and Equalize the audio.

Do all condenser mics have an annoying noise floor, or is it only mine that does?

Mine was a very cheap one, I know, I know.

I just wonder if I should get a more expensive condenser mic or just accept the noise.

My goal is just to record singing & playing instruments at the same time (so I need to record around 30 cm in front of the mic).

I don't want to set up multiple mics. I just want one single mic.

Cause I see other musicians on YouTube do live performances by only using 1 mic.

And I know that they were real (not maiming) because the singer was smiling and laughing a little in the middle and I could hear it too.

Getting a clean voice with Behringer TM1

Hello everyone.

I have a Behringer TM1 in a treated small room. The link has a sample of a song I sang today. I just added a FET compressor (3.1:1) with the needle moving at -3/-6 dB, an EQ with settings I thought sounded okay and a reverb with 15% feedback.

I have the sensation that my voice is either too thin or too muffled and can’t get a balance between them. I just want my voice to sound clean as if you were listening to someone speaking. I have tried many presets, automatic EQs, watched many youtube videos but I just can’t get it right. I don’t know what’s missing. Could you guys give me some tips?

Thanks!

I’ve been finding my Rode NT-1 5th gen very harsh and bright on podcasts. I then found an old Oktava MK-319 and A/B tested them. The Oktava sounds so much more rich and more low end. However I have no other condenser mic to compare it to. Anyone here in this kind of situation?

I’m also keen on knowing if anyone has the Oktava MK-319 and how they rate it? I hadn’t used mine for around 6 years and bought it around 20 years ago.

Is there any way to record the sound coming from the speakers in the room without it being obvious that it’s been recorded on a mobile phone?

I don’t know if there’s any way to make it sound good or true to the experience of being in the room. I’ve thought about recording with a DPA 4560 or some sort of binaural microphone, but I don’t know if it would actually work. Perhaps it’s meant to be listened to on headphones. I’m not sure.

I should also add that I’m basing this on having seen a bloke (who apparently has no experience of recording, as his content isn’t focused on that) who recorded the same thing in stereo, but the sound quality was poor.

Does the Rode Reporter iOS app have a 0 dB or Unity setting?

I have a non-Rode USB microphone with its own gain knob (it's an sE Electronics NEOM, if that matters) and I want to record on my iPad with the Rode Reporter app.

When I record on PC I typically set the input at 0 dB and then use the gain knob in the microphone to get to the right recording level.

I would like to do the same with the Rode Reporter app. Do I do that by leaving the slider all the way to the right, or in the middle, or somewhere else? Hope my question makes sense.

Would swapping to a dynamic mic help with plosives/mouth sounds?

Hey there. I've been doing YouTube full time for close to half a decade and still somehow struggle with my audio when I record. I use a RODE NT1 and still get really bad clipping on my plosives (even with a pop filter) and mouth sounds. Interestingly, whenever I use my handheld RODE Wireless PRO to record in-person sections for my videos, it is nowhere near as bad and I rarely have any issues at all. Although the quality isn't as good as my NT1, there are never any mouth sounds/clipping from my plosives.

Anyway, I have the money to make a serious upgrade (which I want to do regardless of my recording woes) so I'm wondering if swapping to a dynamic microphone like the Shure SM7B would help with the issues I'm having. Again, I do this full time so I'm open to spending a good chunk of money if people have suggestions. Thanks!

What mics would you record with, in this senario?

Senario: Your recording vocals, and acoustic guitar. You want to record both at the same time. Of these, which mics are you recording with, and which instrument are they recording?
-The mics you can choose from:
-TLM-103 Neumann (condenser)
-Shure KSM9(condenser w/great noise rejection)
-Shure SM58(dynamic)
-Shure Beta 58a(dynamic)
-Shure SM57(dynamic)
-Shure MV7X(dynamic)
-Sterling Audio s30(class A FET)
-Senheiser MD 504(compact dynamic)
Using a studio one(pro), with a Studiolive SE16 series iii mixer. So you can technically use as many mics as you want as far as inputs. For the record, yes this is my actual real life senario, and being somewhat new to actually recording, and having so many options, I struggle with being indecisive. Curious to see others ideas/opinions. Thanks in advanced!

Crackling sound when recording with a mic in my bedroom

Hey everyone, I was recording vocals with an SM58 into a Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen interface, but I kept getting a crackling sound. The crackle stopped when I unplugged it from my computer and moved it from my bedroom to my living room. Has anyone else had crackling issues that changed with location or a move? Any advice on what might be causing it to avoid future problems?

Vídeo for reference

Ps: Is the “shhhh” sound normal?

Is this audio fixable through Premiere or Audition? Loud cracking from loose mic input.

I have intermittent loud crackling from a non-secure audio input of my camera. The sample is posted. Any advice is appreciated. TIA

Help Looking for a 360 recording device

Hello I’m a person who plays pathfinder with my group of friends and I been recording sessions from my phone for a long while for ourselves and this isn’t sustainable in the long and also I got a job that really limits my playtime with them from our original 6-11 time. I’ll have to start leaving around 9:30 now. So I was wondering if there’s a cheapish 360 Recording device for this and if you can find it on Amazon cause of prime deals? Thanks!

Nuemann tlm103 sounds horrible

Just picked up this nuemann tlm 103 and it sounds extremely boxy and like it’s missing top end. I took it apart and the capsule looks dusty. I’m wondering if the low quality has something to do with either the dust or the fact I’m running it through a focusrite solo 4th gen interface. All comparisons online lead me to believe it’s real, but the sound is NOT what I’d expect from a tlm103. Any advice?
