In my recording room I have this noise/interference sound. I recorded this using my U87 clone into my Allen & Heath CQ18T mixer, and I can hear it as well on my Rode NT1, but I can’t hear it at all with my Shure SM81. My best guess is that my xlr cable is picking up noise/interference somewhere, since it is a cheap Amazon basics xlr cable, and the problem gets worse/gets better when I touch the cable and move it around. I have tried multiple other Amazon basics xlr cables I have, same issue. I have ordered a WBC Pro star quad xlr cable with Neutrik connectors hoping to fix the noise, it’s not here yet, but I’m wondering what could be causing this noise in the first place, and why the SM81 was not affected at all it seems? I have made sure that the xlr cable from the mic to the interface isn’t touching anything, or any other cables. I have dimmer light switches in the recording room and around the building, but the noise does not improve with turning them off/down. Any advice is much appreciated.

Tascam with moder mics?
Does anyone here have first hand experience running modern mics and preamps through one of these?
What are your thoughts on the sound you get out of it?
How to change default recording format on Olympus DS-5000 or DS-2500 dictation recorder?
I acquired from Goodwill an Olympus DS-5000 and DS-2500 digital voice recorder that I’d like to use for general note taking. Their default recording format is a proprietary format called Olympus DSS Pro (.DS2). I’d prefer to record in the older DSS format (.DSS), as it’s easy to convert to other formats for storage and playback on a PC.
The recording format for these recorders has to be changed via Olympus Windows software while connected to the recorder. The DS-2500 came with a copy of Olympus DSS Player Standard v2.0.0 from 2012, which I can use to download audio files from both recorders, but it can’t change the recording format of either recorder. I upgraded the DSS Player software to v2.1.1, which didn’t provide any new device configuration options and doesn't support (connect to) the higher-end DS-5000 model.
So which Olympus software talks to these older dictation recorders to change their default recording settings? I’m guessing I’ll need a voice dictation package specifically for these voice dictation models. Is there another way to change this default setting?
Can I sample in stereo from my phone with this cable?
EDIT: Like what this guy is doing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJv1-2mo6uw
As title says, im looking for an audio interface right now and the only reason id want a 2 input interface is so I can sample audio in stereo from my phone straight into my daw. I havent seen anything about this online, and the only reason I know about this is because I used to have an Akai Mpc, where I couldn't record in stereo with this cable... Does anyone know if I can, and what inputs I need for this to work? Otherwise I'll get an interface with 1 input, cause I am either using the interface for this or for recording my voice. Thank you!
SSL 2 making clicking sound
Hi guys, I wanted to record a guitar through the audio interface, so i bought ssl 2 around year ago, but when it arrived and i tried it (using reaper if it's matters) even on clean it made a clicking sound, like if it got muted for a second and then connected back. I got disappointed and dumped the idea to record until now. Any thoughts how do i get rid of that?
For better understanding, i installed the drivers, so i dont think thats cz of that. Also my headphones that i connect to it dont have the 6.35 mm jack, so i plug it through the adapter.
Inconsistent sound quality when recording
I'm recording a spoken word audio file. Because of vocal fatigue, I broke it into several sections, and recorded each section on a different day. Now that I'm patching the sections together, the sound quality is different in each section. But I can't figure out what I did differently.
This folder contains three brief excerpts. Can someone tell me what I did differently? Why does Bunny.wav sound softer and warmer than rough-section.wave?

And is there a way to make the rougher section sound like the better section?
My equipment is a Yeti Blue Microphone attached to a MacBook Air, using Amadeus Pro as my DAW.
When Musicians Waged War on Recorded Music - Video Essay - MBSR - The PRO vs ANTI Debate is Not New.
For thousands of years, music was a lived experience. Then, in the mid-1920s, it became an object.
In this video, we explore the forgotten history of the American Federation of Musicians’ (AFM) campaign against "Canned Music." From the "Robot" propaganda ads of 1930 to the total recording strike of 1942, musicians once waged a full-scale culture war against the very technology we now take for granted: the recording.
As we face the rise of generative AI, the arguments of the past, that machine-made art is "soulless," "artificial," and "fake",are returning with a vengeance. By looking back at how the world reacted to the first "recorded" sounds, we might find a path forward that preserves the most valuable part of art: human presence.
I worked really hard to put this together, took about 20-24 hours of my time to Research, Cross Reference, Think of Assets, Generate Assets, Refine Generations, edit it all together in Adobe and about 50 dollars in credits spread across gemini, OpenArt, Suno, EllevenLabs
40$ studio headphones
I want to record vocals and my budget is 40 dollars. Im thinking of maono mh601. Can someone tell me the best flat response headphones at this range?
Beginner Grunge Mix/Master Feedback Needed – I Remain
Hey everyone,
I’d appreciate some honest technical feedback on my grunge track I Remain.
I mixed/mastered it in Cubase with a Steinberg UR22C and aimed for a raw, emotional sound — not overly polished.
Main things I’d like feedback on:
- Instrument/VST drum balance
- Vocal placement & pronunciation
- Overall punch and master quality

Thanks a lot to anyone who takes the time to listen.
Microphone Advice
I’m looking for a sanity check from people who actually record dialogue/VO, because I’m trying not to buy the wrong bit of cheap gear for the third time.
I work professionally in animation, but this is for an independent animated project I’m building outside of my day job. The aim is to start on YouTube and keep the production pipeline clean enough that it could plausibly be repurposed for broadcast/streaming delivery later. I’m not trying to pretend a £60 setup is a proper studio. I’m trying to work out the least stupid way to record usable character dialogue when the budget is basically nonexistent.
The target spec I need to hit is:
- mono dialogue
- 24-bit / 48 kHz WAV or BWF
- no clipping
- no baked-in noise reduction/AGC/“voice enhancement”
- clean enough that it doesn’t immediately sound like bedroom USB mic audio
- ideally something that won’t cause obvious QC problems later
I understand the room and performance matter. I’m mainly trying to avoid solving the file spec while making the actual audio sound worse.
Budget:
- painful target: around £60
- could maybe stretch to £80 if the difference is genuinely meaningful
- used gear is totally fine if it’s a sensible risk
I’m not expecting Netflix-quality results from this. Just trying to find the most defensible low-budget chain for clean animated dialogue, and to understand what I can get away with. I appreciate good sound costs money, that's why it's good. I really wish my budget stretched further but it's just really difficult at the moment financially.
I need help: distortion when recording engine sound
I'm trying to record my ATV exhaust. I can't get rid of the distortion at high RPM. I have the DJI mic 2 which litteraly the whole internet says it's the best thing on earth for this application lol
Maybe it's all marketing or my ATV is just too loud for it?
32 bit float, -12 db (lowest setting), noise reduction OFF, Clipping Control ON
Mic is mounted on my backpack with the wind deadcat
Here is a RAW audio sample :

Here is the edited version (Gain/Volume -12db, Compressor, Bass lowered alot and limiter -1db) :
https://soundcloud.com/2quickstroke-925155914/test-edited
I was thinking maybe putting the mic in my backpack or inside my pocket, but that would likely sound muffled?
Or maybe I'm just in a fantasy with my 120$ mic and I need very expensive equipment for this type of loudness?
Funny enough, it doesn't distorb with my phone, it's just too quiet and not crisp at all, here is a clip :

Thanks in advance for the help, and sorry for my bad english.
Building my dream Bass Studio, one piece at a time
Hello group,
Some time ago I started a small personal project that is slowly taking shape: building my Bass Studio.
I’m a bassist, and for years I’ve been obsessed with the sound of the bass in different contexts: recordings, production, sessions, vintage tones, modern tones, fretless, fingerstyle, pick playing, more organic lines or more processed sounds. That’s what led me to start creating a space specifically focused on that.
I’ve been building the studio little by little, with patience and a lot of learning along the way. Right now I’m working with different basses, preamps, DI recording, amplification, and different signal chains to offer a variety of tones and styles depending on the music.
Recently I also added the Bass Station to the setup, and it’s been a huge inspiration for exploring new textures and production focused on low-end and more atmospheric music.
The idea is not just to record bass, but to build a space where the instrument has identity and personality within a production.
I’m still growing and developing the project, but I wanted to share it with you because I know there are people here who love audio, instruments, and the creative process as much as I do.
If anyone here works in recording, production, or simply wants to exchange ideas about bass sound, gear, or music production, I’d be happy to connect, learn, and share experiences.
Thanks for reading.
When a 32-bit float microphone is connected to a Zoom H1n recorder, can the gain level on the Zoom H1n be set to something stable, like midway, and thus disregarded?
Hi everyone,
As the title says, if I connect a 32-bit float microphone, for example the DJI Mic 3, to a Zoom H1n recorder, do I have to be concerned with the gain level setting on the Zoom H1n? Or can I set it to mid level (that's a "5" on the H1n) and forget about it; and then adjust the volume of parts in editing?
I would really appreciate responses :)
is there a way to clean up the audio on a recording?
i know nothing about any of this, am trying to listen to a recording of a convo, but there's a lot of background noise (was in a car so road noises, engine noises etc) and i want to know if i can get rid of it without a bunch of fancy apps or equipment. sorry if this is wrong thread, wasn't sure where to post.
Recs for a 4 channel mixer
Hey all, I'm doing some basement recordings. I've got a 2 channel focusrite but I'd like a four channel mixer to track drums, sending out to my preamp to record as a stereo track. I don't really need anything fancy, just faders and eq. Obviously, not going for professional quality here. Any recs?
Tascam 414 tips
Howdy group. Working on a record with my band and we’re using once again the tascam 414. I’m pretty well versed with these machines and have used them since the early 00s when you could get them new for super cheap.
Doing something different this time though, we’re putting an se electronics titan condenser and an sm57 through a separate mixing desk and taking an output of that into track 4. It’s giving a blend of the 2 mics for the drums, which are a sparse kit.
Seems to be working but it’s been hard to get the volume consistent. It’s going in at 3db on the strip and then playing back at well under that. I really hope it isn’t the tascam itself starting to fade out.
Basically, any advice for routing multiple mics into one track via a mixing desk. It all sounds good to my headphones but the playback loses a lot of volume.
Photo for flavour. Lo fi country music.
Help making an audio book for my partner
Hi! I’m trying to make a recording for my lover of myself reading their favorite book, but I’m not sure the best way to do it and am looking for some guidance. I was thinking about getting a tape recorder but I don’t know how to upload anything, my computer is a lemon at this point but maybe doing it straight there is better?
Any and all help is appreciated greatly! Thank you.
Looking For A Solid Upgrade From AT2020
I usually record male melodic trap vocals (Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug for reference), its a fairly treated home studio im recording in. Using a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Gen 3.
I personally don't have a problem recording with AT2020 but different engineers i work with told me to upgrade my mic for more detail. I have some spare money nowadays, not something crazy but could go double the price of AT2020. Currently considering rode nt1 or lct 240 pro
Appreciate any help
Getting back into recording and just picked up this stack…
Joe Meek MC2
Grace 101
Avalon U5
All for the low, low price of zero dollars! Love it when friends are cleaning up and just want things gone.
Let the fun begin!
