Why is Dengeki Daisy being singled out now?
With Dengeki Daisy finally getting an anime, I've been seeing a lot of people saying it's "problematic" because Teru is 16–17 and Kurosaki is 24. I'm not trying to convince anyone they have to like age-gap romances or that it is correct or not correct, everyone has different boundaries, but I do think the discussion online has become a bit black and white.
To me, there's a difference between saying "this trope isn't for me" and saying "this story shouldn't exist."
Dengeki Daisy isn't an explicit romance. It's primarily a mystery/drama with romance developing over time, and from what I remember the story doesn't glorify predatory behavior or revolve around sexualizing a minor. The emotional connection and the overall plot are what people loved about it.
What also confuses me is that age-gap romances have been a staple of shoujo (and other demographics) for decades. Some examples include:
- Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet
- Tsuiraku JK to Haijin Kyoushi
- Takane & Hana
- Living-Room Matsunaga-san
- House of the Sun (Taiyou no Ie)
- Daytime Shooting Star (Hirunaka no Ryuusei)
- Fruits Basket (some side couples)
- After the Rain (Koi wa Ameagari no You ni)
- Love So Life
- Dreamin' Sun
I'm not saying every one of these relationships would be healthy or acceptable in real life. Obviously, if this happened in reality I'd have very different feelings.
But fiction has always explored taboo, messy, or morally complicated relationships. We read stories about murder, revenge, yandere characters, vampires, assassins, and all kinds of things we wouldn't support in real life. Why is an age-gap romance automatically treated as though readers are endorsing it?
So I'm genuinely curious:
- Do you think fiction should be judged by real-world moral standards?
- Is there a difference between depicting something and endorsing it?
- If you dislike age-gap romances, is it because of the age gap itself, or because of how it's written?
I'd love to hear different opinions as long as we can keep the discussion respectful.
