Selling house with unpermitted deck

We are thinking of building a new deck before we sell our house. It would be essentially ground level and not touching the house. Do you think TRPA would get involved and require us to get permits during the sale process?

Flying carpenter ants unusually bad right now

I am often down at the beaches on the Nevada side, but it was like a plague last weekend. I'm not used to seeing them down there. Is it common for them to spawn in such large numbers and will they disperse elsewhere/die off? I was still finding them on me/in my stuff when I got home...

One day layover to see Lake Tahoe with family, looking for advice

edit: Wrote Pinnacle, but meant Lassen Volcanic

My family will be traveling between Yosemite and Pinnacles Lassen Volcanic National Park in mid-June and plan on stopping at Lake Tahoe overnight. We are using it as a semi-relax day between a bunch of hiking, but we won't get in until late in the evening and then we'll leave in the early afternoon to get to our next location. So we might only have 4-6 hours to do stuff.

I'm wondering what would be the recommendation for where to stay, North or South. We'll probably want to hit up some visitor center/gift shop, but would prefer if they were for state/national park. Maybe we'd try to do an easy hike or take some pictures of the lake/wilderness.

Upper truckee float still doable?

Hello everyone! I floated the upper truckee (elks club dr to tahoe keys) in early June last year and it was a blast. I'm trying to determine if it is doable this year/next weekend with the low snowpack. I believe we floated it at a discharge around 200cfs and it's currently at 130 (https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/USGS-10336610/). Anyone know what the minimum discharge for floating is, or has anyone gone recently? Thanks in advance!

Looking forward to doing some (smaller, haha) on site, plein air, paintings this summer.
Do you have a favorite view from Fallen Leaf Lake?

West shore Dining

Just had dinner at Shadyside. I have yet to have a bad meal amthere. It’ seems to be busy every time I’m there. The food is delicious. Im obviously biased but feel the west shore has been opening up some great dining options.

Best bar and Mexican food - shadyside
Best boat up bar - chambers.
Best pizza - dog and bear
Best hula pie - Sunnyside
Best breakfast - fire sign
Best punch - the Swiss

Review of USFS Basin Wide Trails Analysis Project and the 45 miles of new trails that were approved

This January, TAMBA helped get the USFS Basin Wide Trails Project officially approved and it's bringing 45 MILES of new trail to the Tahoe Basin.

The big question: where are all these new trails going?!?

After reviewing the 220+ page proposal here are the trail additions you should be most hyped about:

  1. Panorama trail network (in and around Heavenly)
  2. Meeks Ridge trails
  3. Tyrolean (or Tyrolian?) Uphill
  4. Waterhouse Peak Loop
  5. Corral climbing trail
  6. Potential downhill trail from near Big Meadow TH to Meyers

car safety in bear country

i will be moving from UT > CA next week (travel work) and have booked a campsite for 2 nights on the western tahoe shore to break up the drive. i was camping in the tetons this week and the ranger made a joke that “the bears here won’t rip your car open, they’re not tahoe bears!”

after some brief research i realize that they can and will indeed tear cars open. if i remove all food/toiletries/scented items and store in the bear box will that be sufficient during my stay? i usually pack the remainder of my belongings (clothes/shoes/kitchen utensils, camping supplies/first aid) in plastic totes and i’m afraid the bears will think they’re coolers. if i cover these bins with a blanket in the trunk will that suffice?

trying to figure out if having anything in my car, albeit non-scented, is a hard stop and if i need to pivot/change plans. thanks in advance!

El Niño - ski lease planning?

I just saw that they're forecaswting a massive El Niño this fall/winter.

I haven't done a ski lease in about 10 years. What's the best place to find a spot in a good group house?

Late July in Stateline

Taking a boys trip with my teen son for 5 days in late July. Staying in Stateline near the casinos. He’s a runner, we both like hiking. Never been to Tahoe before.

We’ll have a car but I understand traffic is a pain. Sounds like we can walk to Heavenly and Lakeside for mountain/water stuff easily. I’ll be getting out early early a couple mornings to play disc golf at Zephyr Cove and Bijou. I want to get us out on the water on a jet ski for a couple hours. Beyond that, itinerary is open.

If you had three days or so to plan on this trip for first timers what would you suggest? A great day hike, a great trail for him to run 5-10 miles. Things to avoid at all costs. Is the Heavenly gondola and coaster ride worth it? Love to lose the crowds as much as possible but also don’t want a crazy amount of time stuck in traffic.

Thanks!

Edit: we’re experienced in outdoor safety including certifications, hike and trail run a lot, understand it’s a crowded summer destination and not complaining about it. Hoping for some “hey don’t miss this trail” ideas, etc.

Reccomendations

Going on an anniversary trip to Tahoe in June.

Staying near Heavenly Village and looking for recommendations. Fancy restaurants, good hikes, must hit beaches or generally awesome places to visit! Anything welcome. We will be there for about 6 days.

I'm not from the US so don't know much about the area apart from the fact that there is great nature and a massive lake lol My American husband's knowledge is not much better!

Protesting Tech Billionaires Moving to Northlake

How does everyone feel about all these billionaires moving to our lake? To avoid the proposed billionaire tax in California? Its frustrating as our electrical rates are hiking for the power being diverted to data centers. Where is anyone protesting this? We shouldn't make it this easy for them. I feel they don't deserve to sit comfortably as they escape to our shores and we should be pushing back.
