Mom Meetup - Books and Babies?

Hi Toronto Moms!

I am a FTM and looking for some fun low pressure ways to make some mom friends. I thought it could be fun to do a book club where not only we can discuss books we are reading but also have a space where we can discuss all things motherhood. I’m happy to have no format or put some structure into it or just use books as an excuse just to get together as well 😂 I will say I read a lot of genres but my favourites are fantasy, romantsy, historical fiction, and contemporary fiction.

Meetups could be during the week in the afternoon and we could head to coffee shops or sit on a brewery patio - whatever everyone’s vibe is! We can bring our babies and just have a fun time. My daughter is 8 months by the way!

I am in Etobicoke but happy to go anywhere in the west end for meetings. Just curious if anyone is interested.

CampTO - hot weather management & AC?

Just researching for next year. For those with kids in CampTO, what have they been doing about the heat. Someone posted on my local Facebook group that they felt guilty for sending their child to CampTO knowing it was at a school with no AC. These past few days have been brutal. Do some CampTO locations have AC? For kids at schools with no AC how are they managing the heat?

Is anyone keeping their babies home during the heatwave?

First time mom and not sure if I’m overly anxious about the heat. My baby’s daycare is a 30 min bus route away. Babies heat up 3x to 5x faster than adults.

Finding a doctor for a new born

Hi everyone! I’m a soon-to-be first-time and I finally made a decision where to give birth. But now, I am going crazy with figuring out the post-birth care. As far as I understand the baby will need to be checked on 2nd or 3rd day after birth and, in general, I would like to have a medical professional to fall back to for support as a first-time mom without much of a support system. Do you have any recommendations for thorough and competent family doctors/pediatricians in Downtown Toronto (close to St Lawrence Market)?

We’re new to the city and Canada in general, and so far our experience with doctors wasn’t very positive. I signed up for the first available family doctor, but I am super not happy with them - they refused the requisition for an important scan, that I was only able to get done once in OB care. We tried the walk-in, but they failed to notify me that the scan I did was incomplete. I only saw it when i requested the copy of the report. My husband did a blood test with his GP, and they first refused to give us the results via email/phone (we just needed to know the blood type) and then it turned out they don’t have the results and he needs to give blood again. So I definitely don’t want to take a newborn baby to any of our existing doctors but I’m at loss as to how to find a good professional and starting to go crazy about it. Any help and recommendations are highly appreciated 🙏

High Park pool tips?

Hoping to take our toddler to the big pool at High Park this weekend, but we’ve never been before. I have some questions:

Where’s a good place to park our stroller?

I know there are lockers, but will there be an accessible spot poolside to leave his water bottle and swim sandals?

Anything else I should think about for a smooth, fun outing?

Thank you!

Where to buy stainless steel cups in Toronto?

I'm trying to make the switch away from plastics. I know there are many silicone options, but I would prefer stainless steel.

Anyone know of a Canadian source for these? Well.ca has a set, but the reviews are mixed.

(Anything but amazon please!)

Any IN-PERSON Prenatal Classes in Downtown Toronto ?? [ON]

I have SCOURED the internet, and other than the few in-person classes offered at Mount Sinai, and private classes offered by doulas, I can find ZERO prenatal classes offered IN-PERSON within the downtown core of Toronto. This can't be the reality, can it? What am I missing?
I've found the classes offered at Oona and Kaer, which look great, but both are 1hr commute by TTC from where I live downtown, and I don't drive. Has prenatal just never bounced back to in-person after Covid??
I'm looking to connect with other moms in my neighbourhood, as well as get some good. informative prep for childbirth (currently 27 weeks pregnant). I've taken the free online classes offered by St. Jo's, which have been factual and informative (if a little dry) but was hoping to find something live and local to add in to the mix.

FTM new to Canada choosing between OB and Midwife for delivery

Hi all! I moved to Canada in May and am 27 weeks pregnant. As soon as I landed, we started looking for a healthcare provider to oversee my pregnancy. We were lucky enough to be contacted by both an OB from Mount Sinai Hospital (via the family doctor referral) and a midwife, but I have a hard time making the final decision.

Since my pregnancy is low risk and I prefer an unmedicated natural birth, I was originally going to go with the midwife. But I really liked the OB! She noted that my anatomy scan was incomplete and arranged for me to have it redone, and, for the first time since the move, I felt like I was fully taken care of. Also, Mount Sinai is much closer to where we live than the hospital I'd be giving birth at with the midwife. It's a difference between a 10 and 40-minute drive.

I am only concerned that if I choose to give birth with the OB, I will be encouraged to do a C-section or take an epidural if my labor doesn't progress very quickly. I guess, in short, my question is: can I have a natural birth in Mount Sinai, or should I rather go with the midwife?

I don't know many people here and would very much appreciate any support, personal experience, or recommendations. Thank you!

Stay at Home Moms

I'm considering not returning to work at the end of my leave, but know that all of my mom friends will be going back. I'm wondering if there are any groups for SAHMs in Toronto! We go to Early Ons currently and different activities, but am looking for other moms to befriend. Looking to send my son to daycare around age 2 (summer 2027).

Are baby bouncers worth it? Need some advice...

We're thinking about getting a baby bouncer and I'd love to hear some real life experiences before buying one.

I've been browsing amazon, shein, and a few other sites, and there seem to be so many options... some manual, some electric, and honestly they all start to look the same after a while. My main goal is to have a safe place to put baby down for short periods and hopefully get a few minutes of hands free time when they're fussy.

We already have a baby swing, and our little one does pretty well in it. For those of you who've used a bouncer, did your baby actually enjoy it? Any models you'd recommend? Thanks! 😊

Vacation ideas with 1 yo

Hi Mama's,

We are planning a vacation with my soon to be year old baby. Any ideas for baby friendly places from Toronto.

We are looking for 4 to 5 days, something relaxing- a bit of sight seeing. Ok with taking flights or driving to.

Nothing too extravagant, but special for us!

Happy to hear your ideas!

SickKids Surgery Wait Times

Does anyone here have experience waiting for surgery at SickKids, or specifically waiting for inguinal hernia surgery?

Our baby’s hernia swells and turns purple every day, and he seems clearly uncomfortable and in pain when it happens. We were told by our local hospital that surgery should happen within a month.

We just had our surgical consult at SickKids and were told we’ll likely be waiting months because they’re so backlogged. In the meantime, we have to keep a close eye on it to make sure he doesn’t need emergency surgery. I know SickKids is an amazing hospital and I completely understand that there’s a wait list.

I’m just feeling really stressed and wondering if this is a typical wait time when symptoms are this bad. If you’ve been through something similar, how long did you end up waiting? Did anyone have success advocating for an earlier surgery date?

My eufy S2 Pro from the May pre order finally arrived

My eufy S2 Pro arrived today here in Canada (pic). Pre ordered during the early bird window back in May. Did my first session right away and the heat + massage together honestly feels like what my LC kept telling me to do manually with warm compresses and hand compression, except I just sat there and let it work:)
