Retakes

Hi guys, I know this may sound a little dumb, but I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me or give advice on how to retake a class in which I got a D. This is my first time receiving a D and also my first time needing to retake a course. I'm a Mechanical-Aerospace Engineer with a Minor in Electrical Engineering, so basically, part of the School of Engineering. I really appreciate all your help.

CSE 022 Grades Finalized?

Are CSE 022 (Professor Kirylov) grades all finalized yet?

I look at canvas and there should be 2 more quizzes that need to be put in the grade book but they aren’t there yet and now it’s passed the grade submission deadline for professors.

Anyone in the same situation?

Will I be able to appeal?

Hello! Last semester I got below academic standing due to poor habits and a medical emergency towards the end of the semester that left me sick in my dorm for half a week and hospitilized for another week. I got all Cs except for one D- in calc 2 (I was only taking 12 credits) This semester I took 15 credits and I got an A-, B, D, and an F (in freaking calc 2 again lol.), this as due to my struggles in focusing and laziness/over cockiness in doing assignments

This leads to me getting a basically 1.98-1.99 gpa. Im stressed that I might not be able to appeal this and prove myself this next semester. I blew my second chance but I wont blow it again. Thanks for reading!

Failed chem twice

I’ve been struggling a with finances and take on a lot of extra curriculars in order to gain scholarship opportunities. I was really close this time around for chem 2 but I barely missed the mark by getting a D+. I really want to do engineering and I’m so passionate about it. I’m just worried that the petition that I placed for the third attempt would not be approved and I’ve been so stressed about it. I talked about how I was doing a capstone project my third year on top of managing schoolwork. I also do research but I didn’t mention that part. I just don’t know what to do but to just focus on what I can control. To anyone that did a third attempt petition how did it go?

help plz 🥲

I just finished my second year, and I’m really worried about one class (Chem 002). This is my second time retaking it, and I’m currently sitting at a 69%, so I’m right on the verge of passing. I don’t think my professor rounds final grades to the next whole percent, only to the nearest 0.1%, which makes me even more anxious. I did pass the lab portion with a high B, which I’m grateful for, but I’m scared this class might put me behind academically 💔. Does anyone have advice on what I can possibly do moving forward?

Anyone know if another ENGR 057 Statics and Dynamics class will be added?

ENGR 57 is like a top priority class for me right now and the only lecture was a time constraint with my other classes no matter how I set up my schedule, any idea if another lecture will open up over summer?

UC Workers! Vote No on the Tentative Agreement

The highlights alone show this is identical to UC's last offer. Strike called off in the middle of the night. Be warned, it was utilized to sell you a terrible contract and claim its a victory. (They said the same thing last time.)

If for no other reason, reject the contract on principle. Everyone should insist they will not accept ANY deal before having the FULL TA and at least a week to read and discuss it. Also Organize to impose rank-and-file oversight of the voting itself.

I graduated today and I am angry

So I graduated and had my ceremony today. When it was my turn to go my name was not called, I was told to go so I went assuming my name would be called when I shook the deans hand. I heard nothing when I went, I was so confused I didn't even get to look at the camera or do my little celebration I planned. Next thing you know I walked down the aisle getting ready to sit back down and my name was called, it was out of sync by three people. Someone took my name and the rest of the people within the same line I was in was all out of sync. My special day was ruined and taken from me, I can't stop thinking about it. Was this my fault, should I have waited? Can I even do anything about this or get anything out of this error? So much regret I have right now maybe I should have asked to walk again.

Prospective PhD Applicant here— any advice?

Hi there- I am heavily considering pursuing my PhD at some point, and have a unique opportunity to make it happen due to location.

I would specifically be applying to the Interdisciplinary Humanities program in History (or similar). I’d love to know more about your experience with UC Merced specifically in terms of graduate studies. I am coming in with a BA + MA from a Top 5 university.

What is funding like? Program support? I’m a husband and father to a 3 year old. Parent/ student perspectives extra welcome!

Thank you

Sorry to the Lantern Worker

I'm sorry to the lantern worker that served me.

I ordered an ice water and you didn't charge me. I should have spoken up because its typically .27 cents after tax. I thought, oh I guess we are giving out water Cali style, but then I saw your superior fast walk to you even breaking away from a conversation in order to --what I believe-- scold you for not charging me.

I should've went back and say I could pay the .27 cents but I didn't because I got embarrassed and choked up.

I'm sorry again, I was thirsty.

Bay Area pre-med seriously considering Merced. Need honest answers before May 14th.

I will be honest. I was dragged to Merced's admission day and walked out genuinely impressed. Professors were at booths actually talking about their work. Pre-med students I met were not toppers but they seemed grounded and serious. Almost everyone I spoke to seemed proud to be there, which I did not expect.

I am a Bay Area pre-med student with an average GPA. The culture where I grew up made it easy to feel behind even when you are not. I am not looking for an easy ride. I am looking for a place where if I put in real effort, the environment works with me instead of against me.

Three things I genuinely want honest input on:

GPA reality: Is a 3.85+ achievable with consistent hard work or does pre-med at Merced still have that cutthroat weeding out culture? I am not asking if it is easy, I am asking if effort actually translates to results here.

Community and study groups: I was a late joiner at my Bay Area high school and building real friendships was hard. Does Merced make it easier to find people to genuinely study and grow with, or is it still every person for themselves in pre-med?

Research: Admission day made it sound like undergraduate research and a senior thesis are almost guaranteed if you pursue it. Is that actually true or is it competitive and hard to break into?

The prestige and social angle, and how it actually plays out: This one is harder to admit. Nobody from my school is openly going to Merced. In my community it is not the name that comes up. I know that probably fades once you are on campus and building your life there, but right now it is real and it weighs on me. I want to hear from people who felt that same hesitation before enrolling. Did it actually go away? How long did it take? Do you ever feel it creeping back or does the campus life eventually make it irrelevant?

I know Merced has a reputation to fight against and I am okay with that. What I need to know is whether students who came in average and hungry actually left with strong med school applications. Does that happen regularly or is it just a few exceptions each year?

Deadline is May 14th. Any firsthand experience helps more than you know.
