Where did you learn the skills that have served you well in your life and what were they? College? On the job training?

I was thinking about this the other day. I have had my fair share of jobs and have been through my fair share of training and certificate type programs. So I was thinking what skill(s) have I learned that have served me throughout my life and where did I learn them. I don't just mean served you well for work but for your life.

Job/Career wise I was a mechanic for a long time. I ran heavy equipment for a bit. I was a machinist for a bit. A Quality tech.

Out of all those jobs and training I was sent to i think the skills that have served me the most through my years I learned at a junkyard. I worked there for 3 years after I turned 18. I had always wrenched on cars with my dad and this seemed like a good fit. I learned so much from the old shade tree guys that worked there.

I got to see cars torn apart. Internal engine components. I really helped me understand how things worked. I learned which parts were interchangeable between manufacturers. Bolt patterns on rims. I got to flip cars upside down and see how brake lines were run. I learned how to mig weld and arc weld. I learned how to cut with acetylene torches and how to braze. I learned how to operate a skid steer and an excavator. I used a tow motor in the shop and a boom truck in the yard. I learned all the old mechanic tricks and shortcuts.

It was a low paying job that put me out in the elements but those old shade tree guys taught me shit that i have used in my personal and professional life for the last 30 years.

How about you?

Suggest me a great post apocalyptic book

What would you recommend. Read The Stand and loved it. Read The Road and liked it. I have Swan Song lined up to start soon. I'm looking for others like this.

Thanks for the tips.

Suggest me a book with weird/neurotic type main characters like in Big Swiss and A Good Person

I'm loving these main characters. I read A Good Person last week and loved it. Someone suggested Big Swiss and Sky Daddy to me. I have about 20 pages left of Big Swiss and Sky Daddy is on hold. Big Swiss is great too.

Looking for books with main characters like these. Weird. Neurotic. Compulsive. Witty. Always making the wrong decisions.

They're very fun to read.

Bucket at House of Blues Cleveland 5/8/26

Pretty killer show. It was surreal seeing Bucket after wanting to for 20 years. Waited outside for two hours then an hour wait inside but it was worth it. Crowd was mellow.

All kids from all Elyria city schools being evacuated home due to a bomb threat

I just got the call from the communications director. There was a bomb threat to all Elyria schools apparently. Was told to come pick our kids up.

Anyone have any more info?

From the city schools Facebook

---Safety Alert: Elyria High School received a bomb threat moments ago. Students are being evacuated safely, and emergency responders are en route. Please stay away from the campus until further notice.

All other district schools are currently in a lockout status as a precaution. Please do not come to the schools or call school offices at this time so emergency communication lines remain available.

We will share additional updates as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.---

Is there a lack of bass solos across Frank's body of work?

Lack of may not be the right term but that's what I'm going with. I am a huge fan of bass solo's. Across Frank's body of work there are obviously tons of guitar solos full of improv as well as sax and keys and drums. Are there any songs you can think of even live versions that has any improvised bass solo's that go on for minutes like the drum and guitar solo's we all love?

I would love to go back and refresh my memory.

Thanks.

A Good Person by Kirsten King - very witty with a likeable main character that was probably not supposed to be likeable.

Has anyone read this yet? I am about 80% finished with it. It is tagged as a Mystery/Thriller and I suppose I can see that but it is quite funny. Not really full of twists but it is a fun read. Kind of refreshing actually.

I'm thinking you're not supposed to like the main character Lillian but she is quite funny and I actually liked her a lot.

Without spoilers the premise is her 'boyfriend' breaks up with her and she winds up putting a hex on him. He winds up dying and she falls under suspicion and starts scrambling.

How does it work with your parents? When they needs something do they call you and ask you for it? I am asking because my mother does not do this. She will get all passive aggressive and drop hints that she want's or needs something and they get all bent if I don't jump on it.

It is extremely annoying.

Same for you?

I sure did. I had stacks of these things. My friends and I would pass them around. Started in 74 but late 80's early 90's I think it really took off. They had cool covers with our fav celebs.

Ozzy. Willie. Carlin. Snoop. Hunter S Thompson. Bukowski. So many more all had covers. In the 90's they sponsored the cannabis cup. It was a great kind counter culture magazine that was still mainstream.

It's still around today but with the internet and the availability of cannabis I don't think it hits the same.

Has anyone read this? I'm on page 320 so a little over halfway through. It is very interesting. There is a touch of the supernatural. That is usually not my thing but it is working.

Any thoughts without spoiling it for me?

Came out in 85. Think MTV but more underground rock and hip hop videos. It really got going in the 90's though. You could call the 900 number (remember those) and request music videos. Think college radio but music videos.

---The Box (originally the Video Jukebox Network) was a pioneering 1990s interactive music video channel where viewers called a 900-number to request videos, which then played on a local, often eclectic, playlist. Known as "Music Television You Control," it was famous for playing hip-hop, metal, and underground music not shown on MTV before being acquired by MTV Networks in 1999 and shutting down in 2001.---

This blows. Add driving to the things I can't afford to do.

Anyone remember doing this? An analog cable box and an index card would get you free HBO, Showtime and Cinemax.

I can't remember the name of the book(s), the author or the main character but I want to check them out again. Does anyone know of any books where the main character is a handwriting expert and maybe an FBI agent?

Thanks

Here Jean Jacques Machado tells Joe Rogan how Chuck used to train with Rorion but started to come to train with him and Rigan in their garage. He said Chuck would be gone filming a movie for 6 months then home for 6 months. During the 6 months home he would train with them every day. Blah Blah Blah Chuck bought them their first jiu jitsu academy.

He owned the mall where the school was and told them they didn't have to pay anything.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIXvuPmgtXQ

Here Rigan talks about it

https://www.bjjee.com/bjj-news/rigan-machado-talks-how-chuck-norris-helped-him-start-a-bjj-gym-hes-the-reason-we-stayed-in-the-usa/

Rigan also says how Chucked help him with his Visa paperwork.

Chuck really did a lot for jiu jitsu kind of behind the scenes. In another Jean Jacques said at one point Chuck mandated for someone to get a black belt in his association they must get a blue belt in jiu jitsu first.

Don't know if any of you know or even care but I think it's a cool little piece of martial arts history/trivia

More talks about it

48 year old male. 6'3" 227lbs as of Sunday start. I have cardiomyopathy and severe COPD so my exercise is limited to a recumbent bike and I cannot let my heart rate go over 130bpm per my cardiologist. I do two 30 minute sessions a day and only burn about 120 calories per. The exercise is not the hard part but the calorie count is. How can you all keep at this?

I am trying to stay at 1,800 calories per day and it is already so hard. The calories add up so fast. About 3 months ago I put a major shift in my diet. Went from frozen pizza and other frozen foods and canned chili and other processed crap to chicken breast and brown rice and whole grain pasta. I didn't lose any weight. Turns out my portions were way off. I just never realized.

I use my fitness pal and I have a food scale and wow. You don't get much food on the plate for the calories. 2 ounces of pasta is 200 calories. 4 ounces of chicken is 200 calories. Once you start putting sauce and parm on the pasta it starts to rack up.

I am trying to be good and stay off the scale until Sunday which will be a week. I feel like if I get on the scale Sunday and I see a weight loss I will keep motivated. I hope it is there.

I am having a hard time though. I just want to eat. I eat cause I am hungry. I eat cause I like the way it tastes. I eat because I am bored. I tend to snack and graze all day.

Sorry for the long post but how do you all do it? How do you push through and stay motivated? I really want to lose 27 lbs. I am just afraid I will fail.
