Where did you learn the skills that have served you well in your life and what were they? College? On the job training?
I was thinking about this the other day. I have had my fair share of jobs and have been through my fair share of training and certificate type programs. So I was thinking what skill(s) have I learned that have served me throughout my life and where did I learn them. I don't just mean served you well for work but for your life.
Job/Career wise I was a mechanic for a long time. I ran heavy equipment for a bit. I was a machinist for a bit. A Quality tech.
Out of all those jobs and training I was sent to i think the skills that have served me the most through my years I learned at a junkyard. I worked there for 3 years after I turned 18. I had always wrenched on cars with my dad and this seemed like a good fit. I learned so much from the old shade tree guys that worked there.
I got to see cars torn apart. Internal engine components. I really helped me understand how things worked. I learned which parts were interchangeable between manufacturers. Bolt patterns on rims. I got to flip cars upside down and see how brake lines were run. I learned how to mig weld and arc weld. I learned how to cut with acetylene torches and how to braze. I learned how to operate a skid steer and an excavator. I used a tow motor in the shop and a boom truck in the yard. I learned all the old mechanic tricks and shortcuts.
It was a low paying job that put me out in the elements but those old shade tree guys taught me shit that i have used in my personal and professional life for the last 30 years.
How about you?
