A rant about Cassandra Cain’s writing

First off Foxy is autistic, so pronouns are mess. Foxy will try to keep consistent. Also, Foxy is semi verbal, so has super hard time making understandable words (think early movie stitch from Lilo and Stitch) and struggles understanding others. So please, make small paragraphs and simpler words.

Also AAC = Talky things on iPad.

To be clear, Foxy adores Cass. She his favourite. But Foxy has seen things in fandom and comics that bother Foxy a lot so let’s go.

  1. Foxy hates hates hates the telepath rewiring her brain thing.

To cure Foxy’s autism, you’d have to do something similar to Foxy. And Foxy considers that murder. Cause autism, and semi verbalness is who Foxy is. Big part at least. Semi verbal makes so many things different for Foxy. The same applies to Cass.

Foxy is not against her eventually speaking. That happens all the time with autistic kids and people after strokes. Heck Foxy

in speech therapy! Foxy would love it if Cass got speech through therapy (and used an AAC which is tangent for other day). Foxy hates that it was done to Cass not through her own efforts, but against her will too for some rando’s convience.

Also why is there no AAC offered to her like ever? She’d probably be able to figure it out easy peasy, and AAC can help kids understand and talk better! She already uses gestures, and the way it works is similar. Action = reward.

Foxy doesn’t know how to fully express how this grosses Foxy out, but Foxy hates it, especially cause there was better options.

Also Foxy hates hates hates the idea that she is too hard to write. Y’all wrote WallE. A robot who doesn’t speak, but still conveys emotion. How the hell are non verbal people harder to write?!

  1. Cass is not silent, or really that mysterious.

Foxy understands there is trope of mysterious Asian assassin. But is she really that mysterious? Or silent? She’s very expressive. She gets to have thoughts and feelings. Foxy is not silent either. Foxy communicates just fine with people who listen/see.

Also the fanon trope of her being perfect emotional support is stupid. She struggles with empathy eg. Understanding other people’s reasoning. She punched Steph for stopping her from doing stuff. Is it cause she’s semi verbal or a girl?

  1. Cass cannot use sign language (at least not ASL) any better than English

Cass has big struggles in receptive (and expressive) language. Which means she can talk fine, but struggles to understand people. Even without the telepath, Foxy thinks she has slower understanding but need to fact check. ASL is a language. It is not just random gestures.

Foxy’s disability similar. Sometimes, words (both page and mouth) either are blurry/ don’t exist (eg can’t hear them) or don’t make sense. Foxy could hear doctor talking today  but can’t understand what is happening. Foxy’s carer had to tell them to take off shoe.

Foxy can’t learn ASL. Only reason Foxy so good at words is cause Foxy’s langauge got really bad only year ago. So Foxy learnt language and works off what he remembers. Foxy literally cannot learn new things well.

Also if you really wanted sign, there is Makatron. It’s basically really simple toddler level sign language. It’s designed for people like Foxy and Cass who have language difficulty.

Worth asking to be moved to group home?

Hello Foxy is Foxy (as in person writing this)

Foxy has just autism, but has a hard time understanding others. So please make paragraph breaks.

Foxy doesn’t actually understand if they struggle with stuff enough to count as higher support needs, or if they should ask for help, eg move into group home, or help with washing. Foxy currently lives in residential care for foster kids.

BATHING/SHOWERING:

Foxy does..okay at this. He can go in shower, change water temp, and just stands there. Maybe brushes his teeth, and puts on conditioner and shampoo on hair and rubs hair. Foxy has super short hair (couple cm). Then drying off is hard cause Foxy can’t make himself dry.

DRESSING:

Foxy okay with this. Some of the more fidgety stuff is hard. But Foxy doesn’t know gs dirty or when to put in laundry.

EATING/COOKING AND MEAL PREP

Foxy messy eater, but can eat okay. Foxy also very good cook, when he can remember to make food. Also struggles to remember the food is cooking, and burns it a lot.

TRANSPORT AND SHOPPING

Foxy great at this, minus reading struggles.

TOILETING/PERSONAL HYGIENE.

Foxy can go to bathroom on his own, but sometimes has small pee accidents. Also can’t really wipe good, cause get poop stains on clothes. Also doesn’t shave cause forgets. Also forgets about pads a lot and brushing teeth.

HOUSEKEEPING:

Foxy won’t do anything except laundry or wash dishes.

Foxy has NDIS, but doesn’t know if he should bring this up to adults

Need advice for sensory tool and going back to school TW: mention of self harm

Hello! Foxy is Foxy and he’s autistic. Level 2 to be precise. Foxy is gonna start school next week for first time in a year and is really really super nervous.

Foxy used to go to school but Foxy’s autism got lots worse 2.5 years ago. Foxy has really hard time understanding things and doing stuff outside interests, so especially math and English really hard. Which causes meltdowns and Foxy runs and often tries to hurt himself/kill himself or will get lost. Which is bad and Foxy doesn’t want to do.

Foxy found sensory tents and safe beds online and was wondering, if anyone knows, if tent is openable from inside, or could Foxy get in there, preferably with room for adult or a doggy (The school has a black Labrador puppy named Possum and he’s so cute and awesome) and like not get out by himself?

Also any pro tips to avoid getting stressed out and not having a meltdown? Kinda peeved cause it was supposed to be on an art/cooking day which are special interests, but it got changed and the second day is hours after a doctors appointment.

Things you wished were talked about/understood more

Helloooo! Foxy is Foxy (They/He/Fox/Fox’s) and Foxy was wondering if anyone just had experiences or thoughts they wished were talked about more or better understood on here!

Foxy go first!

  1. Everyone should be allowed to pick labels (if they are in the community)

Foxy personally uses the term moderate autism and mental age. Foxy completely understands if not Friend’s cup of tea, but Foxy is allowed to identify how he wants.

However, Foxy highly disagrees with using terminology that doesn’t apply. Eg a non non verbal person (eg someone capable of speech) calling themself nonverbal or semi verbal.

  1. Under stimulation causing extreme depression and aggression

Foxy has attempted suicide and lashed out verbally at people after days of understimulation. Unfortunately Foxy gets underestimated easy so Foxy still working on doing better mood wise.

  1. Pronouns getting reversed. Yes it’s an autism thing

No it’s not just a symptom of DID. Autistic people mess up pronouns, especially higher support people. Spend some time over in those communities and you’ll see.

  1. Receptive language issues. Having a hard time understanding other people and reading.

Foxy can’t read big texts, and struggles to understand even easy things and speech. It’s sometimes all blurry reading wise or just straight up doesn’t make sense, or like the person is either not making noise, or making useless noise.

  1. Struggles with hygiene.

Foxy doesn’t know when clothes/sheets clean or dirty. He doesn’t know how to wash themself properly. Foxy can’t dry themself properly either, or brush their teeth.

What a moderately autistic person wished low support needs people knew TW for light mention of abuse

Hi we are Foxy! Quick dictionary before we get started!

AAC - talky app thing on iPads

LSN/MSN/HSN - Low/Moderate/High support needs

Okay let’s go!

  1. You can’t go nonverbal.

Being non verbal is a 24/7 state. The non verbal community has been talking about how they hate that term for ages. And no, you aren’t semiverbal either. That’s also 24/7 You’re having a verbal shutdown/speech loss episode.

Foxy is semi verbal. They can’t talk coherentantly, and even making words is incredibly painful. They can’t get a job, or go to a regular school. But your incorrect use of the term is also hurting us, because whenever Foxy says oh they’re semi verbal, people are like oooohhh you’re anxious. No. Foxy is the opposite of anxious. Also if we hear oh use your words one more time when Foxy gets his AAC we are fighting someone. (Joking joking this is a joke. Please don’t smite us.)

  1. Semiverbal and non verbal people often have trouble understanding others

Foxy can’t read or understand big chunks of words. He can’t understand math like…at all. Sometimes we can’t even hear people talking, or understand what they want. Some nonverbal people have no language. It is not just always a motor issue. And no, it’s not always because of an intellectual disability. Tho no hate, y’all valid and cool.

  1. AAC can be hard to use. It’s not a magic wand.

Our AAC has caused meltdowns. Some autistic people take a while to understand the point of AAC. It can be exhausting. Frustrating. Dysphoric. Have you seen an AAC before. You have to go through so many folders for one word! Sometimes Foxy doesn’t even have the freaking words.

  1. Saying oh autistics don’t do that, it’s a stereotype is ableist.

Hi! We are a low empathy autistic. We do not have a personality disorder. Foxy has low theory of mind.  Some of us have meltdowns. Some of us only interact with special interests. Some of us can’t take care of ourselves. Some of us have violent behaviour. Stop erasing MSN/HSN people.

  1. It is not infantilising to be accommodated, even if that specific accomodation is “demeaning” towards you.

Foxy is a permaregressor. Basically this means Foxy is age regressed all the time. Foxy needs to be treated like mental age otherwise bad things happen. Foxy is basically stuck as a kid in some ways. We call ourselves a vampire. It would be so weird to treat some of y’all as kids.

It is not infantilising for us to have visual cartoony aids. It is not infantilising for carers to speak for us.

What is infantilising is taking away Foxy’s autonomy. Assuming Foxy can’t have a say in their care. Foxy can’t know anything. It’s also infantilising to assume we are lower support needs and ignoring asks for help.

  1. Also, you aren’t low support needs because you had no choice.

Abuse is rough. Starving sounds unpleasant. If you are truly higher support needs, no amount of abuse or threat of death would make you be able to do stuff. Foxy has had to go back to abusers cause they can’t take care of ourselves. Youth shelters are inaccessible so we had to go back to severe violence until CPS decided to step in before we died.

We were abused. Foxy is a foster. Foxy is not white. They are Slavic, which generally is a more conservative culture. Foxy still has violent meltdowns. They still can’t read/do math. They would starve to death/be filthy if without help.

Hello everyone!

Foxy has Level 2 autism and has big struggles with communicating. It varies but sometimes can’t understand or use AAC, or can’t respond/answer questions.

This is extra likely to happen in doctor’s office which is problem. Foxy is older kid, and in a foster care group home, and can’t know what staff are gonna take them to doctor. Some adults are great, and do all the talking and communicating, and Foxy just has to tolerate the touching. But some adults suck and completely leave Foxy to do taking, which has been big disaster before. Foxy also doesn’t know how good their word skills will be that die, so really scared.

But Foxy wants to go to doctor as Foxy’s feet are wonky and hurt a ton to stand on. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions?
