I haven't been part of the splatoon community until recently, despite playing since the Wii U days, so I'm not as up on the current state of things and the meta and what have you. I'm trying to learn now and get a bit more involved in the community (the general splat subs anyway) but every time I post something or try to ask a question I get berated with downvotes and snarky commentary from people who just seem to hate it when someone else doesn't know everything about the game or asks a question they think is dumb.

Was this community ever nice and welcoming, or was it always filled with miserable tryhards? Should I just stop trying to interact and keep to myself at this point? So far I'm regretting even trying to engage with this community when all I've gotten back is snark and rudeness.

Most people can agree AI is getting out of hand and seems to be sparking controversy left and right and of course this leads to debate. I work in a creative field with a company that is stauchly anti-AI and at first it was nice to come on reddit and see people banding together against it in the anti-AI subs, but then I realized there's a formula that happens.

No matter which side you're on, you start at your home base - your echo chamber sub, the one that agrees with your stance. People post brainless takes from the other side, saying "look what these fools are saying this time", everyone gets annoyed at them, enter phase 2.

You then go into the "wars" sub and stir up shit. Saying "pro/anti AI people, how do you justify this?" Then the floodgates open, and the post becomes a shitstorm of bots or asshole rage baiters flinging around the worst takes imaginable that do nothing except make their side look terrible.

You then take the worst offenders and bring it back to your echo chamber where you post a screenshot and say "get a load of this asshole" and the cycle repeats.

Brigading is basically the name of the game for both sides, and for many it serves as an outlet for people to bully people they don't agree with and get off with zero consequence. Basically pure concentrated Reddit sludge.

People will try to call for legitimate civilized discourse on there but it falls apart after like 2 comments because most participants are disingenuous and looking to argue to begin with. No one changes anyone's mind, no one comes away enlightened or more informed, it just serves to piss people off and cause chaos.

Also it's a breeding ground for various psyops I'm sure, but that's a different discussion.

Anyway I had to dip and get it all off my feed. My opinions on AI won't change, I'm not looking to have them changed, and no one else there seems exactly inspired to look at things from a different angle as a result of that "debate" either. It's just a cesspool and there's no point to it so I'm done 🙌

I've always played with my pro controller figuring it's more accurate but I like detached cons for almost every other game because it allows me to arrange my hands in a more comfortable position. I was wondering how much of a handicap it would cause in splatoon 3, or if some people prefer this way?

I'm purely casual turf war/SR/Single player trash btw if it matters.

I've had several conversations with pros regarding the use of AI in school work and while it always starts out with stuff like "I use it to organize my research that's all", after a few minutes it becomes clear they want to defend it because they have in fact used it to complete their work for them in the past and don't want to go back to their old "having to actually learn the material" ways of the past.

I've had a few people try to say "why do you want me to *suffer* like you did?" As if learning and doing homework is "suffering"

It's challenging. It takes time and effort and it's probably frustrating sometimes but "suffering"? Come on.

Just do your own work. You're paying an absurd amount of money to complete a course of study that's supposed to be your future career ideally. These courses were designed to be completed by people without chatbots, I promise you CAN do it 😭

If you know enough to understand that LGBTQ+ people are unfairly oppressed, you understand it's because they cannot fundamentally change the thing they are being oppressed for. It is not a choice, it is something you are born with.

An AI user can stop using AI at any time. There is no dysphoria involved. There is nothing about their inherent nature that compels them to use AI. They were not born AI users. It is not the same.

AI users are making a choice. Gay/trans people are trying to be who they are. Anyone who says the two are the same is cosplaying systemic oppression- trust me, they couldn't actually deal with the absolute nightmares LGBTQ+ people have dealt with their *whole entire lives* no matter how much it seemingly elevates their narrative.

AI users aren't oppressed, please dont fall for this obvious bait.

Feels like it happens every single splatfest but no matter how prepared I think I am, I always get absolutely reamed by people who seem like they do this for a living

I'm getting so flustered and keep having to remind myself this is supposed to be fun 😂 but I'm trying so hard and just getting absolutely clobbered!

I knowww cozy games are everywhere and splatoon without gunplay sounds like a day without sunshine but since splat 1 I've always wanted to immerse myself a bit more in the world and get to know the characters a bit better and really feel like I was living day to day life in Inkopolis.

I imagine taking a Pokopia approach where we have to rebuild Inkopolis or even just spruce it up would be a good approach. There would be more in depth character customization, more reasons to visit the other areas, maybe an apartment to decorate, a way to build friendships with NPCs, not to mention more opportunities for cool concerts!

Would you guys play something like this?

This whole "AI is coming for your job, accept it" talking point is so foul because you're actually rooting for a person to lose their livelihood and their income to a piece of software. Like you have chosen "Team Software" in this debate and are gloating in the possibility that it might create more human suffering because what, you disagree with the people losing their jobs? Therefore it's a good thing? Hooray, we now have people struggling even MORE in this shitty economy but at least you are friends with the bot replacing people!

Slimy. Gross. Rotten. Stop it.

Now while I do understand the rise of AI has in fact caused disruption to employment for many, it's wild how they believe this is the case across the board.

I'm lucky enough to be employed by a company that uses all human work for its creative output. As our "product" is 100% creative (not to put too fine a point on it so as to not identify my work, but the company's sole function is as a creative entity) we understand the importance of human talent and skill and my boss has made it a point to exclude any and all AI from our workflows. We have let people go for turning in AI generated content. What you make for our company has to be YOUR doing.

Whenever I tell a pro I'm a writer, their immediate response is "oh so you're THREATENED by AI? Scared it'll take your job??” like no. Not in the slightest. I can hate AI and dunk on it without being worried that it'll take my job, because I work for a company that believes in the value of human work.

Not everyone employed in a creative setting is getting replaced by AI. Get a grip 🤦‍♀️

I think I got a Wii u and splatoon 1 back in like 2013? I wanted it since the first E3 announcement. It was just so colorful and vibrant and fun, and when I got it I had a blast learning the ropes and playing through single player and multiplayer content.

I've bought and played 2 and 3 since then as well. Have spent huge chunks of time on both. I consider myself a huge fan of the franchise, having gone on huge binges where I play it constantly for weeks at a time sometimes. But recently after delving into this subreddit I've come to a horrifying conclusion.

I don't think I actually know how to play this game.

To be clear I understand fundamentally what the game is about and how it's played. But I've never been competitive. I've never dug much deeper than turf war and single player campaigns. I just really like grabbing a fancy weapon and shooting people with ink at the end of the day.

The more I learn about things I'm doing wrong, the more I wonder how I've gone all these years without knowing this stuff.

I had no idea gyro controls were meta. I never use them in other games so I turned them off here. I never realized different weapons have different roles, I just figured everyone grabbed what they liked and went crazy. I never even paid much attention to team composition or anything like that, always just assuming the game is balanced such that it doesn't make too much of a difference.

Here I am just trying to play the splatfest to pregame for raiders and I'm realizing I don't think I have ever fully understood the complexities of how to play splatoon, after about 13 years of playing it.

So anyway I feel dumb as hell. How are y'all today?

edit: y'all are doing such a good job at making me feel like I might not actually be stupid so thank you 😅 I do still want to work on honing my skills now that I understand what I've been ignoring for so long, but maybe it's okay to just go in there no thoughts head empty too.

These words need to be taken right out of this conversation. AI advocates have taken up the All Lives Matter mantle of using faux persecution as a weapon, painting the other side as monsters who would actually hurt children or call for genocide.

We're talking about a debate over software. And they're using the same labels on us as are used for actual irredeemable criminals.

This is a slippery slope, and one I hope doesn't gain any more momentum. Standing up for human made creations does not make you a Nazi and it's an absolutely absurd claim to make. This shit needs to stop like yesterday.

Pros: Do you truly expect to come into this sub and enlighten an anti to the point where they see the light and start using AI?

Antis: do you really believe a pro will hear your argument and back off their AI usage?

Even if both things happened simultaneously we'd be back at square 1.

And I've never seen a single example of either happening. Just a bunch of pissed off people calling each other stupid and uneducated and achieving nothing.

Seriously, what is the goal of this debate? What would come out of it that would bring either side satisfaction? Or is the debate itself enough even if you just leave it more pissed off than before?

It seems like you can't critique AI without pro-AI people taking it super personally and insulting you as though you just insulted *them* rather than AI. Some of these guys sound so miserable, all you need to say is "Yeah I don't use the AI tools in Photoshop" and they're calling you every name in the book and spewing absolute vitriol about how stupid you are.

Why do they act like this? If it's just a tool, not a human, not a family member, why do they insist on defending it like it's some poor, defenseless creature? I don't know if it makes them feel superior or if they feel like they are actually AI's personal army but it's very bizarre behavior to say the least.

AI doesn't need you to defend it, and someone choosing to not use it doesn't make them stupid/worthless/uneducated/a 12 year old child (all things I've been called for simply stating I don't use AI in any of my day to day tasks or workflows).

Just be civil, it's not hard! It really isn't!

EDIT: Okay wow the amount of AI defenders coming for me on this. if you guys want to assume ill-will please understand that is on you. I have clearly stated my motivations for making this post: I want to see what AI artists consider "great AI art". That is it. If you guys are looking for a fight take it elsewhere, that's not what I'm here for and I've been personally insulted enough on this post.

Yes, before you comment, what I'm asking for *is* subjective.

I want to see a piece of AI art that stuck with you long after you first saw it. Maybe the piece of AI art that inspired you to create AI art. Something that connected with you on a deeper level and made you think. Even better if you feel it's original, fresh, and stands out among other pieces of AI art, and you feel might even deserve a place even alongside great human art.

I have struggled with difficult travel anxiety (as well as generalized anxiety) for years, and with a trip to Italy coming up, I could feel the nerves brewing for weeks. I went on Amazon as always before a trip to buy my travel essentials, but this time I added in something new given the heat wave going on right now in Italy: a USB rechargeable tabletop portable fan. I figured you never know the AC situation and plane air as well can be very stuffy and dry, it might come in handy.

Guys when I tell you this thing has been saving my LIFE since I left my house for the airport.

Having constant air circulating in my face has helped me stay not only physically cool but also mentally. It's like it's reminding me to breathe and keeping me from panicking somehow which is not at all what I expected from it - I just was looking for some temperature regulation and white noise.

Turns out at least for my anxiety, both of those are huuuge. Plus the cool air is so grounding for me.

At the same time, as I'm watching people walking down the sidewalk soaked in sweat, I'm walking with my lil fan blowing on me, all chill and put together. I'll never travel without this thing again even if I'm not going somewhere warm.

Hope this can help someone else out there!

EDIT- sorry I forgot to add, I *believe* the "burned" to "freezing cold" pipeline came from the coffee evaporating and cooling on the woman's lap. but she acted like she just had both ice water and hot coffee poured on her at once.

Sorry for the long post but wow! This lady. Not gonna exaggerate and say she was the Alpha Karen or anything cause I have seen enough videos to know how bad it can truly get, but this is the worst example I think I have ever experienced in person.

About 5 hours into an 8 hour flight to Rome, the flight attendants were going about their drink service. Lady in the row across from me in the window seat ordered a coffee. As the flight attendant reached over with the coffee, either it tipped or something happened and some of it spilled on the lady. The flight attendant immediately apologized and offered her napkins.

Some of this conversation was a bit muffled due to proximity but somehow the lady went from "you burned me" to "it's freezing cold! Can't you bring me a blanket or something?"

This flight attendant clearly was thrown off, and said essentially she could check on a blanket but needed to finish drink service first.

Lady went OFF. I mean full blown bawling. "This is your fault, why aren't you doing anything to help me, what's your name I'm reporting you" all the classics.

For the next 3 solid hours, this lady did nothing but complain to her seatmate and passengers around her about the flight attendant, how evil she is, her attitude this her attitude that, going back and forth from "she dumped coffee all over me" to "I was freezing cold." Then she'd start crying again for awhile. Whenever the flight attendant would come by, she would just berate her, but thankfully she only needed to come by a couple more times before landing.

But lady would not let it go. She was still crying over having coffee spilled on her when we landed. She was also complaining that there was no meat in her vegetarian shepherds pie. At one point I looked over at her since she was causing a scene and she just gave me the worst evil eye like I had anything at all to do with it.

I can't describe it any other way than to say this woman's vibes were ROTTEN. You could tell by looking at her, this was not just a person having a bad moment. This was a woman who routinely pulled this kind of thing to gain sympathy or free shit, or just genuinely enjoys making a spectacle and getting attention.

So on my way out of the plane I said to the flight attendant, "I just wanted to say I think you did an excellent job today, no matter what any other passenger might say. May I also have your name in case I want to file a report of my own?"

I plan to call and file that report as soon as I can sit down and do so, though my trip has not allowed me the spare time yet. I just hope that witch doesn't cost that FA her job or get her in trouble.

Btw in case youre wondering why I didn't just put on headphones and tune her out - I was trying to sleep, and I never can sleep with anything in or on my ears. Plus I do enjoy the white noise of a plane engine. But needless to say, Coffee Lady did not make getting sleep any easier.
