Some people have mistaken my game for a farming sim, so I made a new trailer

There’s no farming in the game. Instead, you run an inn for monsters, prepare meals, decorate your inn, and befriend your monster guests.

I tried making this trailer with a different feel from my previous one.

I designed a logo for a wholesome monster inn management game.
I also added motion and sound effects for the trailer.

Tools used: Figma + DaVinci Resolve

Would love to hear your thoughts on the overall feel!

I gained 12,000 wishlists in 3 days from a single trailer

I’m making an indie game called Monsterest, and I wanted to share a marketing experience we recently had.

TL;DR:

  • A YouTuber with 180K subscribers featured our trailer, and we gained around 12,000 wishlists in 3 days.
  • If you ask a creator to feature your trailer and they don’t upload it, try improving the trailer and reaching out again later.
  • I think the YouTube thumbnail is pretty important. If you’re reaching out to a creator, consider providing some design assets they can use for the thumbnail.

The first trailer I sent wasn’t uploaded.

A few months ago, I reached out to Indie Games Hub, a YouTube channel with around 180K subscribers, and asked if they could feature our game trailer.

They didn’t upload it at the time. I’m not sure why they didn’t feature it at the time.

After that, we made several improvements and reached out to them again:

  • Upgraded the trailer: Remade the trailer using the latest version of the game and added more polished and interesting scenes.
  • Refreshed Steam store page: Updated our Steam page description and screenshots to match the latest version of the game.
  • Provided thumbnail assets: We shared a Google Drive folder with clean press assets to make it easier for them to create the thumbnail.
  • Kept the trailer off other platforms: We didn’t post the new trailer anywhere except our Steam page before they featured it.

This time, they uploaded the trailer with a better thumbnail that they made themselves.

I actually think it looked even better than the thumbnail example I had originally provided.

Our previous trailers, which we uploaded ourselves, never got more than around 1,000 views. I can’t say for sure how much the thumbnail contributed, but I think it was an important factor.

The video started gaining views very quickly. We also started seeing content creators on TikTok and Instagram sharing the trailer even though we had never contacted or asked them to do so.

Overall, we gained around 12,000 wishlists from this one trailer.

I also think it helped that our previous trailer hadn’t been featured by a large channel.

It gave us a chance to come back later with a much more polished version of the game and a better trailer. So even though we initially missed the opportunity, it turned out to be a good chance to show how much the game had improved.

This was a pretty surprising result for our small indie team, so I wanted to share our experience in case it helps other indie developers.

In case you're curious, here's the game for context:

Edit:

Someone asked me to share the email template, but I can’t seem to find their comment anymore.

I used the template from this post by Masa Kei as a reference. The post itself is in Japanese, but the template is written in English.

I’ve been working on my monster inn management game for 2 years, and here’s the trailer.

Hi, r/indiegames!

I shared my game here about a year ago, and it's come a long way since then with lots of improvements.

It's called Monsterest, a cozy monster inn management RPG where you run an inn for monsters, manage rooms, gather resources, and build friendships with your guests.

There's a free demo available on Steam. If you like it, I'd really appreciate it if you added it to your wishlist.

Thanks so much for checking it out! 😊

just released the itch.io demo for my cozy monster inn management RPG!

Monsterest is a cozy inn management RPG inspired by the warm atmosphere of life-sim games like Stardew Valley. You run an inn for monster guests, decorate and upgrade guest rooms, cook meals, craft furniture, and improve guest satisfaction to grow your inn.

One of the main features is that NPC guests don’t just stay at your inn. They can actively help you with daily activities like gathering materials, mining, fishing, and hunting.

Key features:
- Manage your monster inn
- Guests help you mine, fish, and hunt
- Cook, craft, decorate, and expand your inn

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. You can play it on the itch.io page below!
