The Best Batters this World Cup Cycle

Joe Root has been a phenomenon this cycle, scoring 1304 runs at an average of 81.5, which is 17 higher than the next-best batter this cycle. In 2026 alone, Root is averaging 246, which is absolutely bonkers. This also comes at a time when Root is arguably the best Test batter in the world.

Daryl Mitchell is the current No. 1 batter in the ICC ODI rankings. He has been on an incredible run throughout his ODI career, with ODIs comfortably being his best format.

Matthew Breetzke has easily been the best South African batter this cycle, so much so that the next-best South African batter, Aiden Markram, is averaging 39 this cycle.

One thing that struck me is that Sri Lanka have at least four batters averaging in the 40s with a minimum of almost 800 runs, yet none of them have crossed the 50-average mark this cycle. Even so, their batting looks very stable.

From the time I started playing cricket, Kane Williamson has been one of the most technically compact and magnificent batters I have seen. Balance, timing, and that trademark calm at the crease came together to make his batting one of the most consistently pleasing sights in world cricket. A thorough gentleman and a true role model for youngsters.

His retirement will probably be received with unexpected relief in more than a few bowling camps. Wishing him luck and success in his next chapter.
