We need to have a serious talk about AI usage

We need to have a serious talk about the usage of AI generated content on leftist platforms. I will try to keep this as short as possible to keep it accessible.

Prompting, posting and sharing AI-generated content undermines our goals as leftists and ought to be prohibited on all leftist platforms.

1. AI is accelerating ecological death

Water: AI datacenters are often built on already, drought-struck land, draining water from the areas that need it most ^((3)) and poisoning local water supplies for residents ^((4)). According to UN-estimates, by the end of the decade about 1/8th of global, annual, domestic water usage will be solely used for cooling AI datacenters ^((5)) - sweet water that is already very much in short supply ^((6)).

Emissions: The majority of AI-datacenters in western countries are powered predominantly by fossil fuels ^((1, p. 28)). Despite the US hosting by far the most datacenters globally ^((1, p. 32)), the carbon footprint is off-shored to poorer countries ^((1, p. 31)).

Approximate electricity usage for different generative AI querries. For context: Powering a lightbulb for an entire year consumes about 44 kW/h (2)

2. AI is de-footing artists and laying siege to culture

In a recent study in Germany that surveyed over 3000 visual artists on their stance on AI usage ^((7)). 56% see their income at risk while 56% fear the livelyhood of visual artists as a whole. Over 91% of them demand financial compensation for their works - compensation which huge AI giants such as Meta have no interest in providing, nor even disclosing they used it in the first place ^((8)).

But the power of AI extends far beyond inhaling. It exhales too. It produces mediums, it produces your music, your podcasts, your video essays, your YouTube content. And believably so ^((12)). We are selling our culture to the ones making the algorithm ^((14)). We are selling our culture industry to AI:

>"Culture industry" (German: Kulturindustrie) is a term coined by the critical theorists Theodor Adorno (1903–1969) and Max Horkheimer (1895–1973). They proposed that popular culture is akin to a factory producing standardized cultural goods—films, radio programmes, magazines, etc.—that are used to manipulate mass society into passivity
^(-) ^(Culture Industry)^(, Wikipedia (16).)

3. AI is threatening freedom of protest

Police forces in the EU are adopting AI-powered facial recognition technologies to quickly identify suspects - aka, protestors ^((9)). This is not all-to-new. An article by Darren Loucaides even goes as far as saying "After 2022, mass protests practically disappeared" in connection with AI surveillance and faccial recognition ^((21)). Meanwhile, the US pushes "Flock" - a private equity company - cameras onto US streets, monetoring US citizens with AI-powered facial recognition technology ^((10)) and selling this data to ICE ^((11)). Undermining public freedom of expression is a telltale sign of fascist regimes. This predominantly affects people in already marginalized social positions ^((15)).

4. AI is used as a propaganda tool

AI is employed to produce political propaganda far beyond the uncanny representations of humans you might think of ^((12)). An EU-based study found that, in a blind test, participants already found AI-made news and fake news more believable than their human-made pendants ^((13)). With the main difference being that one of these is far easier to pump out en masse.

Marginal means of perceived veracity and willingness to share across the four types of news items. Marginal means are derived from multilevel models specified in the Analysis section. Higher values indicate greater perceived veracity and a higher willingness to share. Error bars represent standard errors.

Further it is worth mentioning that AI-tools are also used to make the algorithms that dictate what you see on social media - and algorithms are never neutral. Someone has to make an algorithm. Someone has to decide what you are allowed to see and what not ^((14)).

5. AI kills

Ai-technology is far beyond the baby-stages of being incorporated into military technology ^((18)). It is no coincidence that one of the biggest advocates of AI, Google, also just so happens to try to sell that same AI technology to the Pentagon for military uses while still trying to deceive the public into believing they are a happy, innocent tech company that makes a cute search engine ^((19)). Though Google is not alone in this as OpenAI was all-to-happy to join ranks with Trump's Department of War ^((20)).

6. Why you should stop using AI

All of the above is made possibly because allow AI. It will only get worse when we allow it to slowly creep into social acceptability. Every image you generate accelerates environmental destruction little by little. Every video you generate costs independent content creators views, revenue and, eventually, their livelihood. Every cent of revenue you permit AI-giants to make goes straight into slaughtering children elsewhere using AI-powered, unfeeling military drones.

Should we stay on the current course, leading AI-researchers say we might be looking at a doomsday scenario as soon as 2027 ^((17)).

We need to stop supporting this.
Please share this in your communities to raise awareness.

Mesa Heirloom should have come with a rework...

("Bad" in the sense of "not fun to play" /"not well designed". Not in the sense of inefficient.)

Second most boring frame in the game, istg. Second only to Rhino.
Tried playing her again because I made a baller fashion for her but couldn't stand more than one mission.

Who thought that "Just toggle the ability button, look in one direction, hold LMB and everything dies" was good game design?

What phones are you using?

I have been wanting a new phone for a while now and I have my eyes on the Fairphone with e/OS. What drew me in is the prospect of being able to easily replace parts of the phone as well as the alternative OS. But before I buy anything expensive I figured I would ask for advice first.

I am looking for something that is de-Googled and I refuse to buy Apple products. I value (in descending order of importance) everyday functionality (calendar, maps, music etc.), privacy, compatibility with common apps, battery life and sturdiness. Though I am aware that "privacy" and "smartphone" do not exactly go hand in hand.

What alternative phone do you guys recommend? Are there mobile Linux distros (other than Android) that are worth looking into? I heard Graphene isn't bad but I have no experience either way.
Thoughts on the Fairphone?

Warframe needs a votekick system

Today I was trying to play archon hunts. On the final mission, there was a Mirage player who as afking so we could not progress the misison. Leaving the mission and requesting just threw you into the same mission back with that afk mirage player. I am personally at a point in the game where I can confidently solo archons too but its usually quicker in a squad still, plus not every player is at that point. So essentially this player has made public matchmaking impossible for that specific mission for the time they were afk. I reckon at least half an hour.

There are plenty more examples of people just playing badly enough to be a nuisance but sometimes you don't have the luxury of restarting the entire mission. People afking in railjack missions is a daily occurance - especially since Sirius & Orion.

I think situations like these prove again that Warframe needs the option to boot teammates from the squad through a vote. In games like Team Fortress 2 this is done by a simple popup at the side of your screen. No penalties for getting kicked, you just get booted from the mission as if you had completed it, including all rewards. No profile entries, nothing.

Thank you YouTube for removing the dislike on shorts!

I think this finally made the platform shitty enough for me to not want to use it anymore. So I guess thanks YouTube for breaking my doom scrolling addiction by flooding my feed with brainrot, AI slop and other bad content that I can not meaningfully curate anymore!

Now might be a great time to jump back into the game and pick up some cheap color palettes: Nora has "Gamma" for nightwave creds and the pride month palettes are 1 credit each and will be gone soon! They have saturated blacks, whites and some really good colors overall!

So what triggers one of these dumb AI summaries?

As a mod of a sub you sometimes see AI summaries of a users post history and supposed behavior under their avatar and name when you hover over it. I wanted to ridicule this stupid feature by showing my community members their AI summaries but realized most do not even have any.

What triggers generation of one such AI summary?

This is technically not Warframe related but I figured you guys might be interested in this; It seems mods of a subreddit get AI summaries of user behavior now. I have never seen this in any other sub.

Peak r/Warframe moderation moment. Because of course terrible Warframe moderation would extend to the subreddit too... they moderated me for the same comment four times which lead to an instant ban from the sub 🤡 Couldn't even appeal if I wanted to.

Not gonna lie, RNG rolled stats with major impacts on a weapon have to be one of the worse takes to come out of Soulframe development

I don't like it at all. I don't know what DE was thinking. This isn't fun.

So did anyone ever find a solution for the game crashing during cutscenes?

I just started playing on Linux with GE-Proton 10-34 (though I am having the same issues on Proton Experimental) and my game crashes during some specific cutscenes.

I dug around a lot and found that this is a pretty widespread issue that is caused by the game being horrendously poorly optimized. I dug through posts on this sub, through GitHub, I spent two days experimenting myself now and I think I am just about ready to give up. It seems I am not the only one as all the support requests in the megathread as well as seperate posts here remain unanswered.

The issue is that the game crashes during specific cutscenes at specific points. Always the same cutscenes. Actual gameplay runs smooth enough though.

FF16fix does not address this issue nor have I found any other mod that does.

My specs:

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X (16) @ 3.400GHz
RAM: 16 GB

Kubuntu 24.04 LTS

VENT: Willkommen in Deutschland!

Toll.

Wir kriminalisieren Armut.
Wir richten K.I.
