Dual Citizen TFSA

Any Canadian/US dual citizens who have figured out how to invest with their TFSA without getting slaughtered by the IRS and PFICs?

Currently trying to figure out how to ditch the American citizenship but if they deem it’s due to tax avoidance there’s heafty penalties etc.

Financial Advisor/consultant

Anyone have any money people in town they’d recommend for giving financial advise/counselling to someone trying to build an investment portfolio for retirement?

Can’t use a TFSA due to foreign tax issues so I’m stuck with an rrsp/rrdsp but I’d like to go over the fine prints with someone who’s well versed in it.

Don’t really trust banks FAs because they get kickbacks and commissions and are therefore biased as to the strategies that make them the most commission

What’s the quality?

Last .22 I bought for $500 was a Turkish lemon so I’m wondering if anyone knows how these little plinkers are? Never heard of the company and the price seems awfully low (Sub $400)

Montanas on Division?

Just saw 6-7 Cruisers swarm Montanas on division street and officers looked to have long rifles and were surrounding the building.

Anyone know what’s going on?

Shooting for birthday

Let me preface this by saying I have been a shooter for 20+ years. I am an active PAL holder with a clean record.

My 33 birthday is coming up and I would like to take a small group(3-5 people) of close, responsible friends shooting - most of them for the first time.

I have 2 firearms of my own, I’m trying to get my other 4 shipped out before then however I thought I would throw out the idea to the Kingston community to see if anyone could help.

  1. I’m aware going shooting with strangers has its fair share of questions, concerns and I respect and acknowledge those - more than happy to meet first, provide information etc.

  2. I’m looking for someone who would be able and willing to join me, provide a few more additional firearms and ammunition (there won’t be a ton of shooting. I can’t see more than 10 rounds per firearm) - I will compensate you for the cost of ammunition.

  3. I’m looking for someone (if permissible) who holds a range membership that we could join so we are in the safest, most controlled space available. I have an option for crown land however it’s a bit of a hike and carrying guns and ammo in/out of the bush sucks on a good day.

I understand this post isn’t for everyone, I’m not part of the Kingstons Facebook group so please, if you don’t have anything to contribute, just scroll on by.

Taking friends shooting

Let me preface this by saying I am an active PAL holder, I’ve been a shooter for more than 20 years.

I’ve moved across the country and left 4 of my guns in BC (I’m trying to get them shipped out) so I’m left with a .12 gauge and a TM22.

I want to go shooting for my birthday with a small group of friends (3-5 people, all of which are responsible adults and would take gun safety very seriously). I don’t have a membership to a range where I am due to wait lists and there’s some crown land but it’s rather uncomfortable to get to.

My question is this - Would I be absolutely insane to post on a local community page asking for someone to take us shooting? Maybe a range member or something along those lines? 1) To have access to the safest shooting space possible and 2) ( with some compensation) to have access to a bit more variety of firearms besides my 2.

I know it’s a huge ask of someone to take strangers shooting and it’s a huge trust thing to go shooting with a random person so I feel like I’m a little dumb for tossing around the idea.

SR5 vs TRD

Always dreamed of owning a 4Runner and now that I have adult money, vehicles are disgustingly expensive.

I’ve been doing the build/price on Toyota.ca and according to what I read online, the TRD off road premium is the “best trim package for what I want” however it’s like $20k more than the SR5.

I’m ideally looking for the creature comforts but also Light towing (utility trailer/boat/teardrop camper) and some daily driving or camping at provincial campgrounds (no off roading).

I thought the SR5 would be just fine for that but I’m curious as to people’s opinions.

If I was looking for a 5th gen/6th gen it also saves me a bit of cash but as of right now, with $10,000 down I’m still looking at about $1000/month for 8 years payment plan for a new one which is brutal.

1/3 the cost of my house for an SUV seems wild to me.

Woodstove

I have a wood stove at my house and it’s rusted significantly over the summer (I didn’t have a dehumidifier at the time of that heat wave).

I’ve bought everything to sand it/ re-paint it with high heat paint and replace the gasket etc. but I’m incredibly nervous to do it DIY for the first time.

Is there anyone in Kingston that’s wood stove savvy who wouldn’t mind coming over for a day and showing me the ropes/helping me re-paint and treat it?

Could pay in beer or a modest sum. I’m not loaded but I understand you’d be doing me a massive favour.

Oil it or needs re-blueing?

Bought an heirloom shotgun and it’s been fine for a few years, this summer was brutally humid in my house and I took it out for a 6 month checkup/dusting and noticed pitting and rust on the barrel.

Would a re-oiling and dehumidifier fix this or should I get the barrel re-blued ?

(Using 3 in 1 Oil rather than a gun specific oil - should I use something else?)

Soaking in solvent

I’ve been recommended to soak my bolt/firing pin of my TM22 in solvent to completely dissolve any grease etc from the factory and then add a high quality silicone lubricant to it to see if it fixes the feed issues etc.

Is it recommended to clean it just with a field stripping or should I entirely disassemble the gun and clean every last nook and cranny?

I’ve reached out to Derya in terms of warranty as it had 4 or 5 OOB detonations as well as failure to feed.

Known issues: Putting 10/10 rounds in the magazine. 8/10 feeds better so I assume that’s a spring tension issue.

CCI Blazers have FTF issues, Aguilla interceptors aren’t as bad however with the TE mag sleeves on, they were having the OOB issues as well as horrific FTF issues.

It hasn’t had a ton of extraction issues but there’s been a few that typically go hand in hand with the FTF

No idea what I’m doing

32M - Debt free (minus mortgage)

I have to be careful with my TFSA because if I make over $20k in interest I pay tax to the US of lame.

However, I’m trying to put in $125 a week to grow my TFSA but I’m learning as I go - am I on the right track or am I being stupid?

I know the market goes up and down so the fed isn’t panicking me but I want to know how/when to buy or know how to look at a stock and know it’s growing, despite the inevitable dips

TM22 Issues

So, I will say it’s gotten “better” after putting about 350 rounds but my current issues are:

Not so much failure to eject but failure to chamber a round/cycle a round. - I’ve found loading 8/9 rounds per magazine instead of 10 makes a huge difference however I still get these squibs? No bullet stuck in the barrel but it just explodes in the chamber.

The Tommy enterprise Mag sleeves were a bit of an issue, they don’t quite seat properly without a love tap and yes they are the proper fitment and secured tightly. The current video attached actually broke the mag sleeve.

I’ll post a photo in a comment below showing what’s happening to the shells when it just jams them rather than propels chambering the round. No idea if it’s just the ammo (Aguila interceptor) or if it’s too high of spring tension on the magazine or if I have an actual issue with the action.

The Gun debate

NOT TRYING TO START A DEBATE OR ARGUMENT

I have a question for anyone really -

I know this discussion usually ends up getting split up into political leanings etc. but as a left leaning centrist who grew up in a conservative household and am still an avid hunter and outdoors enthusiast I have a question.

Regardless of your political affinity, does the average person understand the laws/ethics and expectations of gun owners in Canada?

I know there’s been several incidents of gun violence in our country and it understandably has caused a lot of discussion around the topic - a lot of it (in my opinion) by alarmists or political figures who seem to have very little knowledge or education about it.

Is it just a “guns are bad” mentality with no questions asked?

I find a lot of my friends who are unfamiliar, when they ask me questions or see the process I go through to go shooting (even for targets), they seem to understand my frustrations with what’s happening in regards to the hobby and a lot of them didn’t have any idea about the rules, regulations and ethics surrounding the sport.

Investing options

This is as much as an “advice needed” post as it is a “personal opinion “ post.

Little back story information

33M, horrible financial advice growing up and parents who weren’t financially literate.

Took me some time but I am now

Debt free (minus a mortgage), full time career in trades (average 50-80k gross) with a pension.

From my understanding if you have a pension through work, a TFSA with dividends etc. is better than an rrsp due to the tax free income top up you can get.

I qualify for the Canadian RRDSP (Goverment match up to 90k lifetime)

I am also a duel citizen so at a certain point I would have to pay taxes to the USA on my TFSA interest (long term) unless I ditched the citizenship.

I did a calculator and it said basically $500 a month into a TFSA ETFs would get me my retirement top up goals by the time I’m 65 however I’m curious what others think?

My plan is to put $500 monthly into a TFSA and then any inheritance/tax returns etc. into the TFSA or rrdsp once I hit my 7k a year limit.

Fishing help

I know this is ridiculous but I genuinely have tried everything and don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

Is anyone willing to teach me how to fish in Ontario? I’m used to rainbow trout and salmon out west. Bass, pike, pickerel etc. are all new to me and I’ve tried texas rig worms, wacky worms, spinners, top water frogs, jiggers, crank bait etc.

In 11 years I’ve caught maybe 3 bass and a dozen sunfish with a worm.

I am boatless so I’m stuck shore fishing for now but anything to help I’m all ears

Sks panic sales

Anybody notice that since the incident in Montreal, Sks prices on gun post have dropped by a few hundred bucks?

Seems to be a panic selling spree going on.

International Tax lawyer/accountant

Hi there,

I’m a dual citizen (Canada/US) and I was going to open a TFSA and realized the stupid states of America taxes you on it because they don’t recognize tax free savings.

I’m debating getting rid of my American citizenship but I’ve been advised to talk to a tax lawyer as they have an exit tax based on your net worth and I don’t want to get slapped with a suprise bill.

On the flip side, my CPA (American) also hates TFSA and isn’t being helpful explaining it to me so I’m trying to find someone who can tell me if I can open one/invest within a threshold to avoid taxes to the US

Smart Guard’s tying to off me

I’ve had this happen several times and I don’t understand what I’ve done wrong.

For Reference - my correction factor is 1:4.5 and my carbs is 1:12g.
My target BG with smart guard is 6.7 and my active insulin time is 2 hours.

The first photo - if I’ve done my math correctly is 16.7-6.7 (Target) it should be correcting for 10mmol/L which would be 2.22 Units. It’s 4.025 which is more than enough to get my BG to 0.

The second set of photos, was a manual correction using Temp Target and then the Temp Target expired and the pump Auto-corrected more than enough insulin to also drop me to 0.
