Rory Flanagan: Rory was born in a small, tight-knit Irish village where storytelling was a major part of community life. Because he was always a bit gullible and sweet-natured, his older cousins and siblings constantly tricked him into believing local folklore. They convinced him that certain trees were inhabited by fairies and that he had a "luck meter" he had to maintain by doing random chores. Rory's signature crooning, old-school vocal style didn't come out of nowhere. His grandmother signed him up for the local parish choir when he was 7. While the other kids wanted to sing modern pop music, Rory genuinely fell in love with traditional Irish ballads and mid-century American standards (like Michael Bublé and Frank Sinatra) because they reminded him of his grandparents’ living room. Before coming to America, Rory wasn't necessarily bullied brutally, but he was always the "weird, quiet kid" who spaced out during football (soccer) practice. He spent most of his recess time listening to an old iPod or reading travel brochures about America. He was incredibly lonely, which is why he was so desperate to make friends, and hold onto them, once he arrived at McKinley High. His room back in Ireland was a shrine to idealized American culture. He learned English idioms from watching reruns of old American sitcoms and movies, which gave him a slightly outdated view of what US high schools would actually be like. He genuinely expected everyone to be welcoming, wearing letterman jackets, and hanging out at malt shops. While singing soft pop and Irish ballads, he eventually grew up to appreciate heavy alternative rock and writes acoustic mashups in his spare time. Because of his bisexuality, Rory had crushes on Brittany, Sam, and Finn. He even dated Sugar while he was at the school before he had to move back to Ireland and they had a long-distance relationship. After moving back to Ireland, Rory eventually returns to the US or keeps in close touch with Artie and Sam via long video calls, updating them on his own local indie-folk band.

Sugar Motta: Sugar was born on February 14, 1996. She grew up surrounded by luxury, acoustic grand pianos, and eccentric creative freedom as the only child of wealthy piano mogul, Al Motta. Sugar's childhood was spent playing hide-and-seek among hundreds of gleaming Steinway and Yamaha pianos in her father’s massive warehouse. She treated every grand piano like her own personal stage. Because her father showered her with unlimited funds to make up for a busy work schedule, Sugar never learned an indoor voice or a social filter. If a meal or a toy didn't please her, she simply threw money or a tantrum until it was replaced. Before joining the God Squad or New Directions, his only performance experience was playing acoustic worship music at church picnics or singing hymns around the living room with his family. He had a small, old-school radio hidden in his room. He would stay up late tuning into secular pop and rock stations at a very low volume, which quietly built his love for genres outside of Christian contemporary music. When he first entered McKinley High, he experienced massive culture shock learning about things like carbon dating, mainstream pop culture, and modern slang. He also joined the God Squad and dated Quinn. He genuinely hates wearing shoes and only puts them on when school dress code forces him to, or when the Ohio winter snow makes it impossible. While he is devout and sings with the God Squad, Joe secretly loves playing 1970s disco and funky bass-lines on his acoustic guitar. He spends twenty minutes meditating or doing yoga in the locker room before a big glee club performance to stay grounded. His dreadlocks aren't a fashion statement; they were a mutual decision made with his parents when he was a child, inspired by the biblical Nazarite vow. Because his hair required specific care, Sunday nights in the Hart household always involved a long, methodical routine of washing and twisting his hair, which he found deeply grounding** **Growing up in a quiet, rural or semi-rural environment, Joe was a magnet for stray animals. He routinely brought home injured birds, stray cats, and raccoons, attempting to nurse them back to health while praying over them. As a kid, Joe took idioms completely literally. Unique: Unique was born on August 20, 1995. Growing up, her favorite singers and fashion personas were Beyoncé and Whitney Houston. Long before she ever stepped onto a stage with Vocal Adrenaline or the New Directions, Unique's absolute favorite childhood pastime was putting on elaborate Sunday living room productions with the family’s plastic-covered or plush velvet couch being used as a strictly reserved for her most “supportive” stuffed animals. Her favorite giant teddy bear was always placed dead-center because she decided he gave off the vibe of a strict but loving Broadway critic. Before she upgraded to a hairbrush, her very first microphone was a silver metal flashlight. She discovered that if she unscrewed the top slightly, the flickering light gave her the dramatic “stage lighting” effect she wanted while singing Destiny's Child or Whitney Houston tracks. Halfway through her living room concerts, she would march into the kitchen, grab a capri sun and a small plate of goldfish crackers, and announce to her parents that the talent was “taking a mandatory 15-minute union break.” Every single performance ended the exact same way. In this headcanon, that walk was perfected when she was just eight years old. She used to sneak into her mother’s closet to try on a pair of oversized, sparkly red kitten heels. Because they were too big, she had to fluidly swing her hips and put all of her weight into her stride just to keep the shoes from slipping off. What started as a childhood balancing act accidentally became the foundation for her unmatched, confident signature strut. She would be constantly bullied as a kid just for the clothes she wore and being different. After high school graduation, Unique moves straight to New York City musical theater. To pay the bills while auditioning, Unique lands a job as a backstage wardrobe dresser for a major Broadway production. While she is hired to help the stars change outfits, the entire cast quickly realizes she has a better voice than half the people on stage. Within a month, she becomes the unofficial "hype woman" backstage, vocalizing high notes in the dressing rooms to help the lead actresses warm up. Unique secretly uses her downtime in the wardrobe department to alter her own clothes. She adds hidden layers of tulle and Swarovski crystals to standard thrift store blazers, making her everyday street style look like a walking red carpet. Whenever Mercedes, Kurt, or Rachel are in the city, they skip the fancy restaurants and gather at Unique’s tiny Washington Heights apartment to order takeout food. Then she joins Mercedes Jones, and becomes a breakout star on off-Broadway and Broadway stages. Her big break happens when she is cast as an ensemble member and the second understudy for a fierce, diva-level starring role. On opening night, both the lead actress and the first understudy come down with food poisoning. Unique gets the call two hours before curtain. She doesn't just nail the performance, she gets a standing ovation before the final song even ends, cementing her place as Broadway's newest IT girl. eventually winning a Tony Award. Then Unique eventually returns to McKinley High years later as an official faculty advisor or guest coach for the New Directions Glee Club, making sure queer and trans students are fiercely protected from day one.

Jake Puckerman: Jake was born on October 17, 1997 after his mom had an affair with Puck’s father. Growing up, Jake’s mother worked at a country club to pay for his ballet lessons. He kept a worn-out leather notebook where he mapped out complex dance routines. Instead of drawing traditional staging formations, he drew them like football plays, a habit he picked up from watching Puck. He also has a completely separate Spotify playlist dedicated entirely to classical music remixed with heavy R&B beats. It was the only music that could completely calm his anxiety before a major performance or a confrontation at school. When Puck left for the Air Force, he didn't just leave behind his reputation; he left Jake his very first acoustic guitar. Jake didn't want to play it at first because he was tired of everyone expecting him to be "Puck 2.0." However, during his lonely senior year, he secretly taught himself how to play it upside down (left-handed) just to make the instrument uniquely his own. To memorize lyrics and scripts for the Glee club, Ryder couldn't just look at the sheet music. He started recording Finn, Marley, or Sam reading the lines out loud, then listened to the audio on loop while running laps on the football field. Because writing by hand frustrated him, Ryder discovered voice-to-text apps. He started secretly speaking poetry and lyrics into his phone late at night. What started as an emotional outlet for his anxiety turned into a massive collection of surprisingly deep, vulnerable indie-rock songs. Kitty Wilde: Kitty was born on February 22, 1997 to neglectful parents. Because of that, she was taken advantage of by older guys. She eventually enrolled in McKinley High, became a Cheerios cheerleader, and dated Jake and Artie. However, the sudden, unexplained breakup between Kitty and Artie left her deeply bitter. But once they both ended up in New York, they had a long-overdue, massive blowout fight in a diner that ended in tears and an immediate reconciliation. Though Kitty loved performing and won Nationals, she eventually realized that the professional musical theater world kept trying to pigeonhole her into the “ditzy blonde ingenue” archetype. Bored by the lack of meat in those roles, she shifted her focus. After high school graduation, Kitty went to NYU and eventually becoming one of the most respected and genuinely feared theater reviewers or news correspondents in the industry. She discovered that her other assets, strong opinions and a fearlessness about expressing them, made her perfect for writing op ed pieces and theater reviews. She is now one of the most respected, sought after and feared reviewers in the NYC theater scene.

Honestly, I’ve been pretty curious about all of the characters lives. I know there’s been flashbacks and conversations about their childhood throughout the show, but I feel like that wasn’t really enough. Luckily, I made a few of my own.

My own Glee character headcanons

Rachel Berry: Shelby, Rachel’s biological mom, probably hooked up with both of her dads separately. She was born on December 18th, 1994 and was raised in a strict Jewish household. immediately knew she was born to be a star when she saw “West Side Story” when she was 1 and “Funny Girl” when she was 5. She keeps a pig-shaped stuffed animal named Finn in her closet that she talks to when she felt lonely, and secretly loves watching ice hockey. After graduating high school, she went to NYADA for college and eventually became a famous singer.

Santana Lopez: Santana was born on August 27, 1994 to her famous singer mother Gloria and her doctor father. She loves to listen to bluegrass music, reading 19th-century British classic novels, and watching Dance Moms. Her secret crush is Sofia Vergara. Her first kiss was with Brittany when they were in summer camp as kids. Even though she dropped out of University of Louisville, Santana eventually became a successful actress.

Finn Hudson: Finn was born on August 24, 1994 and got his first drum kit when he was ten, but he was also an incredible baker who originally dreamed of competing on a televised baking show. He also originally wanted to be part of the army since he thought his dad died in Iraq when he was just a baby. He then discovered his love of singing when he sung a Journey song with the Emerald Dreams lawn care worker, Darren, who dated his mother. On his freshman year at McKinley High, he immediately became the football quarterback after impressing the coach during the tryouts. During his free time, Finn likes playing his Xbox.

Kurt Hummel: Kurt was born on May 27, 1993 and started ballet at the tender age of three. But his mom enrolled him after she saw him in front of the TV jeteing and debouleing to the Blues Clues theme song. After his mom passed, Kurt and his dad Burt still had a supportive, loving father-son relationship. After graduating high school, Kurt moved to New York and majored in fashion design while he was at NYU and got a job as a waiter at The Spotlight Diner to pay his tuition. His love for fashion transitioned when he became a massive behind-the-scenes fashion guru and costume designer for Broadway.

Noah Puckerman: Puck was born on November 2, 1994. His parents were married, but his dad left the family after his ex-wife found out about his affair with Jake’s mom. Since then, Puck’s mom Nancy, had to work two jobs as a waitress and an exotic dancer to support the family. Because of his parents’ divorce, Puck developed a bad boy persona and went to jail a few times for bad behavior. Because of that, Nancy forced Puck to become a devote Jew. He secretly adores opera music and spends his free time making intricate beaded necklaces. After graduating high school, instead going to college, Puck enlisted in the United States Air Force.

Brittany Pierce: Brittany was born in a barn on March 7, 1993. And because of her mom’s drunken fling with Stephen Hawking during her honeymoon, she was born half smart & half ditzy. She also gained a superstition about barns. She got Lord Tubbingtin on her 6th birthday as a special surprise. She officially confirmed her bisexuality after her mom took her and her little sister Marissa to an Ohio pride parade and got her first kiss during 7 Minutes in Heaven sleepover game. She’s Fluent in Esperanto, which she learned entirely out of boredom during a random Tuesday study hall. She’s also a huge fan of Brittany Spears.

Quinn Fabray: Quinn was born on February 1, 1994 to very wealthy and strict parents. Growing up, she suffered severe unpopularity and low self-esteem based on her previous look, so she got makeover before she started McKinley High. She immediately became head cheerleader after tryouts and met Finn after football tryouts. She regularly attended poetry slams and slept with one of her college professors while she was at Yale University and wrote her own verse under a pseudonym.

Tina Cohen-Chang: Tina was born on January 15, 1995 to her birth parents before they gave her away to another family. However, her adoptive parents were tiger parents and would constantly annoy her about studying all the time. Their main goal for her was to get in Brown University. After graduating high school, Tina got into Brown University and joined a tap dancing group. During her free time, she writes anonymous historical romance novels and travels to out-of-town conventions in full disguise.

Mercedes Jones: Mercedes was born on February 15, 1994. She comes from a very strict Christian family and is the lead star singer at her family’s church. She was a dedicated, hardcore birdwatcher who kept a detailed journal of local Ohio species. After high school, Mercedes had a "dating around" phase because her music career took priority, and she refused to compromise her values for anyone who didn't respect them. After graduating college, she became a famous singer at Sony Entertainment Records. During her free time, she has girl trips and late-night sleepovers with Quinn.

Sam Evans: Sam was born on August 1, 1995 to struggling parents, Dwight and Mary Evans. They’ve suffered poverty for years, but it got worse once Sam’s dad lost his job and they had to sell their family home because of foreclosure. The family of five was forced to live in a single motel room for a period of time in Kentucky, about four hours away from Lima, Ohio. As the older sibling, Sam felt the pressure to set a better example for his two younger siblings. He spent time with them by playing guitar for them, reading them comic books, watching Avatar & Star Wars with them. He even fed them pizza, but he still felt like he had to be the sole provider of the family. So he became a male model and a male stripper. Before transferring to McKinley High as a sophomore, he lived in a few different places due to his family's financial instability. After graduating, Sam got back together with Mercedes.

Blaine Anderson: Blaine was born on April 9, 1995 to wealthy parents, but because of his sexuality, he wasn’t very close to his father. He wasn’t even close to his older brother Cooper when they were young. Before moving to Dalton Academy, Blaine went to a public school where he was constantly bullied because of his sexuality. Just after he came out, he attended a Sadie Hawkins dance with a friend who was the only other openly gay student at his school. While waiting for his friend's dad to pick them up, he and his friend were jumped by homophobic bullies and were beaten mercilessly. Blaine then decided to transfer to Dalton because of their zero-tolerance bullying policy and has soon gained a lot more confidence ever since. After graduating McKinley High, he moved to New York so he can go to NYU for college. He also married his one true love, Kurt. During his free time, Blaine watches Star Wars and creates his own fanfiction.

Artie Abrams: Artie was born on April 22, 1995 and got in a car accident with his mother when he was 8-years-old, which resulted in him being in a wheelchair. Although he is paraplegic, Artie refused to let that get in the way of his ambitions as he dreams of being a dancer, despite being paraplegic, and hopes to find a cure for his disability. His mom is very supportive of his dreams. After graduating high school, Artie enrolled in the Brooklyn Film Academy. While in film school, Artie wrote a massive, multi-page treatment for a Marvel cinematic universe movie centering on a disabled superhero. He pitched it aggressively to anyone who would listen. Before making it big in feature films, Artie became the go-to music video director for his former New Directions classmates. He directed Mercedes's first major music video and brought a heavy 90s R&B visual flair to it.** **He hosts a very niche, highly technical film theory podcast. And he miraculously was able to dance with crutches. During his free time, Artie plays online video games with Sam.

Mike Chang: Mike Chang was born on May 13, 1994 to a tiger dad and a supportive mom. Growing up, he would feel the pressure of disappointing his parents and being the perfect, golden son as he would constantly over-prepare for every exam. He began dancing when he was just nine years old after he copied Michael Jackson’s dance moves from his Thriller music video. After graduating high school, Mike enrolled in the Joffrey Ballet Academy of Dance and married Tina. During his free time, Mike would play video games and spend his weekends teaching kids how to dance at local dance classes in Lima.

My favorite tag teams are The Radicalz, Too Cool, Brothers of Destruction, Rock ‘N’ Sock Connection, The APA, The Dudley Boyz, The Hardy Boyz, DX, The Brood, and Edge & Christian.

Who was or still is your childhood wrestling crush?

My two big crushes were Jeff Hardy and Shane McMahon when I was a child.

When I was a pre-teen I had an equally huge crush on Roman Reigns. And I still do.

Plus, I think I had a woman crush on AJ Lee when I was a pre-teen too.

Even though they were heels, I’ve noticed that some of the heel wrestlers have fans.

Despite the heat they get, who is your favorite heel wrestler?

Honestly, my favorite heel wrestlers are The Million Dollar Man, Randy Orton, and The Bloodline.
