Brisk Memorial Day traffic at WaWa Supercharger on I-95

Pretty busy supercharger today *Labor Day* in Florida at WaWa. I saw no line but people pulled into an empty stall right after it was vacated. The gas pumps had pretty similar usage.

Fishing Notes from 1964-1967 Brevard, Sebastian, etc.

The image attached is a sample of a 54 page notebook describing fishing in Brevard in 1964 thru 1967. The full document is on Archive.org. I'm not a fisherman so maybe one of you will want to transcribe this and/or find historical value in it. The notebook was created by Earl F. Smith, a local resident for decades.

Post Office Selling Password Books in 2026

I meet people frequently for whom this is a good idea. It's better than what many people are doing, and really a form of password manager.

What choices would you make in selecting a stone, given all you've seen as a FindAGraver?

You all have looked at many tombstones and gravestones and seen what's gone wrong and what's gone right over the years. If you were picking a new stone for yourself or someone else, what would you select, and what would you avoid?

I'm all about long-term legibility, so here are my picks:

  • Granite is preferred. No marble or limestone, especially no rose-colored marble. Nothing shiny or polished.
  • Large, deeply engraved, name, DOB & DOD only. Keep it simple.
  • Flush gravestones probably tend to last longer than upright tombstones. They may get buried, but don't get knocked over or broken as easily. But, you have to go with what the local cemetery custom is.

What do you say?

The Eastern Cherokee Applications are a great resource

The Eastern Cherokee Applications are a great genealogy resource. Even if you didn’t grow up with a story about native Americans in your family, some of your family members might have submitted one of these applications, especially if your family was in the Appalachian area c. 1800-1900.

Congress passed a law saying that people of Cherokee descent were entitled to compensation from the US government. 45,847 Applications were filed c. 1906-1907.

These Applications are a genealogical gold mine. The following is from the description of these records at Family Search: (emphasis added)

>The application required each claimant to state fully his or her English and Indian names, residence, age, place of birth, name of husband or wife, name of tribe, and names of children… It further required the English and Indian names of the claimant's parents and grandparents, place of their birth, place of their residence in 1851 if they were living at that time, dates of their death, … Each claimant was also to furnish the names of all brothers and sisters, with their ages and residences, and the names and residences of all uncles and aunts. Applications were required to be made under oath

These applications have been digitized and are freely available on Family Search. The problem is that they do not have a direct computerized index that is easy to use. Even though the records are free, Ancestry has a better index, so we're going to use that.

Here's how to search for and find someone's application. You should start by searching for a family member who was an adult in 1906-07.

Step 1:

On Ancestry open U.S., Records Related to Enrollment of Eastern Cherokee by Guion Miller, 1908-1910 .

Search for your person by name and location (Record Place).

Click through to the image. This is just the index with minimal information. On the left side of the images you will find the Application Number. Note that many application numbers have been truncated on the left by the scanning process: So, what looks like application number 7602 may actually be 17602, or 27602.

Pay attention to any other application numbers mentioned there. They are probably family members and thus relevant to your search. Things like “Cousin of #1234”, or “Sister of #5678”, etc.

Step 2:

On Family Search, visit Eastern Cherokee applications, August 29, 1906 - May 26, 1909 .

This is a large collection of 318 rolls of microfilmed applications. They are poorly indexed, and not directly searchable.

Take the application number you discovered in step 1, and find the microfilm roll that contains that range of application numbers. For example, #17602 would be found in

Application numbers 17601-17750 (NARA Series M1104, Roll 160)

So, on that microfilm roll, click the camera icon, and start looking through the images to find the application you want. Remember, you are not looking for a single page, but an entire file of pages, maybe 4 or 5 pages, or more.

Applications of family members were often submitted together, so take a look at the applications before and after any application you find because those may also be your family.

Step 3:

Congratulations, you found one! Download those pages, or capture the URL of the first page of the application of interest so you can find it again more easily, and can use it as a source. You can now reference it directly.

Eastern Cherokee applications can also appear in Family Search’s full text search results, but it’s kind of hit or miss. The applications are mixed in with a lot of other results. When you do a full text search, the Eastern Cherokee applications appear under the heading United States. Court Records 1906–1909.

Changing Eufy Account email address is a PITA

So, I needed to change the email address associated with my Eufy account. Should be easy, right? Just log on, change the email, answer a verification email, and all done. NOPE.

There is no way to change the email address. None. According to the support chat, you have to delete the account and make a new one. It is claimed this is for security reasons.

Of course that entails taking your devices off the old account and adding them back to the new one from scratch.

So, in order to use a different email, I had to take my doorbell off the wall, reconfigure all my devices, give them the WiFi password again, and then re-invite all my device users. This included all the little niggling steps involved in initial setup.

The more Eufy devices and users you have, the worse this will be.

Eufy, you can do better than this!

S2000 Refrigerator Test - 24 Hours = 85% of battery

So, I just did a test to see how long the S2000 will actually run my refrigerator. It ran my garage freezer/refrigerator for 24 hours while going from 95% charge down to 10%. So, using 100% would get me 28 hours. That doesn't compare too well with the "up to 30 hours" promotional material. But, I'm not too surprised or disappointed.

The good news is that it did that in the hot garage, over 90 degrees F, and never complained. Worked as expected.

Eufy 2K dual doorbell cam severe limit on live video length

Why, oh why, can't I stream video indefinitely from my doorbell cam? It's not a battery limitation -- it has hard wired power.

It's on my same local network. Seemingly, the camera has nothing better to do. But, no.

Nowhere does it explicitly say that video only works for 10 seconds (or thereabouts), but that's how it works. It's the same thing in the Eufy app or in Homekit (homebridge).

If you were shopping for a camera, and it said "you can watch for 10 seconds every 5 minutes", or something, would you knowingly buy that??

Why can you not attach a web link to a fact on an Ancestry Profile??

Sources are divided into "Ancestry Sources", "Other Sources" and "Web Links". You can attach the first two source types to a fact, but you cannot do so with a "Web Link". This seems like a slap in the face to users trying to provide legitimate sources for their tree.

Some facts may be supported only by a web source, and not by any "Ancestry-approved" source.
