Is this little chubby one bloated, eggnant or fat?

Hi all,
So my brother got 4 panda corys for his tank (he already had 2) we ordered these online from a reputable shop that I usually order from. One of them came like this, he/she usually cant lie down normally his/her back tail is usually up even when he/she rests.

Unfortunately we dont have QT tank so he/she is in the main tank rn. He/she swims, digs and eats normally also socializes well. Seems like he/she doesnt have a swimming problem either although I saw he/she flash few times today yet never see others do that and we have lots of brown diatoms for some reason, we were waiting for tank to mature so we can get Otocinclus to eat those (also my bro loves them so win win) so those might be the reason he/she flash.

water params, 0 Ammonia, 0 nitrit, 10 nitrate, 6.5 pH, 8dGH, 5dKH, 25.5C Temp, fine silica sand substrate

Different Color morphs of pygmy corys

Hi all, as the title says I realized I have 3 different colored pygmys. My og ones are with me for around 4.5 months or so, light grey one is with me for 1.5 month and dark grey one is with me for 1 month.

They all eat the same food and are really active, although I think light grey one is a bit less active than others (There is only one, I’ve got 2 but one died in its 3rd day).

All three groups were taken from different shops, there is 2 dark greys. I’ve searched about if they have different color morphs but couldnt find anything. What could be the reason?

Can I add a school of 6-8 to here?

Hi all!
I love otocinclus because I think they look like remoras and I love remoras lol. I want to add a school to my tank but it already has 1 subadult 1 juvenile Bristlenose and 2 Stiphodon Gobys ( Which I think contrary to common belief they are not only herbivorous but omnivorous and loves eating meaty food ). Therefore Im not sure if they can find enough algae.

In our country we only have affinis (But I think it might be vestitus or microspilus or a mix of all those)

I leave my lights open for 9 hours to support algae growth so would they starve here or would they be good given that I will support their diet with algae crisps and cucumbers ?

My tank is 4 month old. It has stable parameters of GH: 7 KH: 5 pH 7.1, Ammonia and Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10ish

What are these white stringy things on my rotala and Ludwigia ?

Hi all!
I’ve changed my lfs made yellow light (Just aluminum with normal leds prob, nothing fancy) with Glow Light around 1.5 week ago. I was keeping my lights open for 9 hours before to support algae growth for my plecos and stiphodons. Decided to do it like that with new light but total of 10 hours, with 1.30 hours of “sun born” and 1.30 hours of “sun down”. I use 6 ml of All Inclusive Fert a week that is made by a local company. I’ve been using it for 4 months now so nothing new.

I now have some GSA on only front side of the tank (They could have choose the sides which I dont watch but no lol), which I was expecting tbh since I didnt reduce the total photo period when I changed the lights. Also I have these white stripe like things on only my Rotalas and Ludwigia. Not a little bir of things on my Anubiases or Tiger Lotus or Buces or other relatively shorter and slow growing plants.

Also my rotalas were nearly stopped growing when I had my old light, now they startid growing and getting their true colors which is sunset I guess. They were all green with little yellow when I got them lol.

What could be those things ? Should I worry about them?

Housing L260 Hypancistrus sp. Pleco with Apisto Pair

Hi everyone,
I’m currently planning a 80 × 35 × 45 cm (~125 L / 33 gal) blackwater / Peruvian (or wherever choosen apisto is from) Amazon-inspired aquarium for apisto baenschi and I’d like some opinions on the final stocking, particularly regarding keeping an L260 Queen Arabesque Pleco with a pair of Apistogramma.

This isn’t my first aquarium and I already keep other plecos and South American cichlids, but this will be my first aquarium specifically built around Apistogramma and softer, more acidic water.

The tank I’m taking over comes with its established filter, which has been running for around 1.5 years at roughly pH 7.5. I’ll be changing the hardscape and gradually transitioning it toward blackwater rather than suddenly dropping the pH.

My filtered source water is approximately:
pH: 6.8–7.2
GH: ~7 dGH
KH: ~5 dKH
A home RO system isn’t really practical for me, so I’m still researching how far I can safely and consistently take these parameters using my source water, botanicals/peat and properly prepared water changes without chasing pH with chemicals.

The aquarium itself will have fine sand, lots of driftwood and thin branches, leaf litter, caves, plenty of sight breaks and some South American plants. It will be planted, but I’ll intentionally leave some open sand area at the middle front for the Apistos to eat and sift through sand.

Planned stocking
13 × Nannostomus marginatus
8 × Otocinclus, preferably O. macrospilus or another Peruvian species
6–7 × Carnegiella strigata (Marbled Hatchetfish)
1 × L260 Queen Arabesque Pleco
An Apistogramma Pair

My first choice is A. baenschi, ideally a pair.
Availability isnt a big problem where I live, though Im not sure about my waters softness, so I’m keeping a few alternatives in mind:
A. baenschi – first choice, pair
A. trifasciata – possibly a trio
A. bitaeniata – pair
A. cacatuoides – pair/trio

I’m also completely open to other Apistogramma species (w mohawk pls) suggestions that would suit this footprint, community and water situation.

My biggest question is the L260.
I absolutely love plecos and already keep Hypancistrus, so I’d really like to have one L260 in this aquarium if it can be done responsibly.

I’m not aiming to maximize Apistogramma fry survival or turn this into a breeding tank. I mainly want to observe their natural behavior, courtship and parental care. Having some fry survive occasionally would be great, but losing some to the community is something I’m prepared to accept.
What I’m more concerned about is whether the L260 and breeding Apistogramma will constantly stress each other, particularly at night.

My plan would be to give the L260 its own narrow cave at one end of the aquarium, while providing several separate Apisto caves/territories elsewhere. Driftwood, branches and plants would create strong visual barriers between them.

For people who have actually kept Hypancistrus with breeding Apistogramma:
•Does a single L260 work in an 80 × 35 cm footprint, or would you leave plecos out entirely?
•Is egg/fry predation the main concern, or does territorial conflict become a significant problem too?
•Does giving the Hypancistrus a dedicated cave away from the Apisto territories meaningfully reduce conflict?
•Would your answer change depending on whether I choose baenschi, trifasciata, bitaeniata or cacatuoides?

And regarding the water: would you consider my GH 7 / KH 5 source water workable for any of these species while I gradually transition the aquarium, particularly captive-bred baenschi, or would you strongly recommend choosing one of the more tolerant Apistogramma species unless I eventually move to RO? Can I get some RO water and mix it with my own water to maintain lower gh and kh levels and keep it up like that?

I’d especially appreciate experiences from people who have actually kept Apistos + Hypancistrus or any meaty diet pleco together long-term, rather than purely breeding-focused setups.

L260 with Apistogramma in an 80×35×45 cm blackwater tank – bad idea?

Need opinion on getting another ram

Hi all. This is Albert, its his 3rd week with me. Hes living in a 31.8G/120L with 9 Pseudomugil Furcatus, 8 Iriatherina Werneri, 1 Honey G, 4 Clown Killi, 2 Juvenile BN Pleco and 3 L262 frys. He was alone in my LFS’s tank for a while and looked gorgeous even in there so I couldnt resist anymore and got him while I get the Honey G. (Gilbert) they live in harmony for now, only time Albert rams Gilbert is when Gilbert tries to steal his food and even those times he gently rams Gilbert so no harm is done.

I want to get a female for Albert because he sometimes glass surf still when there is a tiny light difference and I thought he wants and needs companion (That was my main goal anyway) but for some reason I cant find a female that is same size as him. They are either slightly bigger or smaller than him. So in this case, what would you suggest me to do ?

I have a spare filter that is running in my tank and a spare 13G I can transfer gilbert in anytime (Thats why actually that tank sits empty) so no problem on that.

Help on dither fish ideas

Hi everyone!
My cousin will give me his 1.5 year old tank ( 80 × 35 × 45 cm ~125 L / ~33 gal ) with his filter when he upgrades his tank so I’m planning a new South American-ish blackwater aquarium and would love some stocking advice from people with experience keeping Apistogramma in a natural-style, apisto centered community.

Tank Planning:
Soft, acidic blackwater (RO remineralized or filtered tap water which has 7pH, I’ll use soils etc to drop it down)
Fine black and white sand, soil for pH
Lots of driftwood, leaf litter, caves, and visual barriers
Low-tech, Apisto-focused layout

Current stocking idea:
1 pair of Apistogramma

• A. baenschi (first choice but a bit hard to come by)
• A. trifasciata
• A. panduro/pandurini

8–10 Kuhli loaches
1 Hypancistrus (either L260 or L333 Gold)
10–12 dither fish

I’m having the hardest time choosing the schooling species.
My current shortlist is:
Glowlight Tetra
Red Phantom Tetra
Rosy Tetra
(Possibly) Bleeding Heart Tetra

Not fan of the pencilfish family personally but I kimda like Nannostomus Marginatus

My goal is to observe as much natural Apistogramma behavior as possible. I don’t want a dedicated breeding setup, but I would love if a few fry occasionally managed to survive and grow up naturally in the display tank.

I completely understand that kuhli loaches and tetras will prey on eggs and fry, so I’m not expecting large broods to survive—just hoping for the occasional success in a heavily structured aquascape with plenty of cover.

Which schooling fish would you choose for this setup, considering:
They should act as good dither fish.
They shouldn’t constantly harass the Apistos.
They should still allow the possibility of a few fry surviving from time to time.
Bonus points if they really complement a blackwater biotope aesthetically.

I’d also love to hear which of the three Apistogramma species you think fits this setup best.
Thanks!

Honey G Standing still, Rapidish breathing. Help

Hi all, this is Gilbert my only Honey Gourami in 31.8G tank. Hes living with 1 Bolivian Ram (Albert), 8 Iriatherina Wernerl, 8 Pseudomugil Furcatus, 1 Hatchetfish (This one is actually my brothers fish but we cant catch it), 4 Clown Killi, 2 Rhlnogobius and 2 juvenile L144.

Its Gilberts 2.5 week with me, he was completely looking normal yesterday morning, sadly didnt see how he was yesterday night bc I wasnt at home. When I came he was sleeping at his 2nd usual spot, under anubias leaves.

He and Albert get along well they were introduced at the same time. I feed Gilber with nanovit, sometimes dried bloodworms and tetra algae crisp pro, algae crisps are his fav. He also munches on plants and roots of my floaters. His poop was normal yesterday, I didnt see today. He was somewhat interested with food earlier today but not so much.

I dimmed the lights a little when I started writing this, he roamed around a bit around his fav spot then returned near filter intake. Also I saw my hatchetfish following (?) him but not chasing, like his shadow. Definitely not chasing because I’seen it chase other hatchetfishes when I had 4, they are harsh chasers. Both seemed chill this time, but still maybe it might be related to cause somewhat. Never saw hatchet chasing nor following any of my other top dwellers before tho, which I have a lot.

Might be an important note, exactly 8 days ago I have planted some new plants and when I am doing that, I did dig up a bit of debris also at the same day I added two new pigmy corys. After that, some of my fishes, including Gilbert, started scratching their gills to plants, it wasn’t excessive scratches just like one or two times a day and not all of my fishes. This has ended like four, five days ago.

So do you guys have any idea about what might be the situation? Is there anyone who can possibly help me and Gilbert?

Edit: also, I’m wondering is he a wild caught honey? He was sold as F0. His collors are not bright like I’ve seen on online and he was nearly silver when I got him.

Another edit: Sorry I forgot to write water params,
Ammonia:0, Nitrite:0, Nitrate: 20, pH: around 7-7.2, GH: around 8, KH: Around 6, TDS: Where it usually stands 300ppm, Temperature: around 25-26. I have a cannister filter and a HOB filter which totally filters around 900L/h and creates nice surface agitation. Tank is 4 months old

Help, Is my Pygmy died from Red Blotch ? Warning:Dead Fish

Hi all, hope everyones corys are doing okay!
This morning I find one of my pygmys dead like this. Other 9 seems to be doing okey, 4-5 of them even doing breeding dances. I added this little one roughly one week ago. I had 6 for around 2+ months. While ordering Honey G. I ordered two more pygmy since its a reputable online seller. Bought two more from my lfs after they surprisingly restocked them. My LFS’s ones are bigger then what I ordered from online so I know this is the one came from other city. What could be the reason? What can I do ?

Water Params, 0, 0, 20. Currently 28 degree celsius but it was 26 yesterday. Last night was hot lol. I did a water change 2 days before, I do weekly or every 1.5 week water changes. I use refined drinking water. Feeding with nanovit and JBL Novo Tab. Substate is rounded gravel on most places. Managed to find black fine sand but its soo little on some parts. I had to do a emergency tank change so I couldnt put sand first, that was all they had. Tank pic at the end.

Need help on deciding an Apisto and Aquascape for them

I’m getting close to adding a centerpiece pair to my 60 × 40 × 50 cm (120L gross) planted community aquarium, but I keep going back and forth between a few Apistogramma species.

Current stocking:
8 Threadfin/featherfin Rainbowfish (Iriatherina werneri) a mid-top dweller specie. Somewhat fast, males has longish fins like “thread”
9 Forktail Blue-eyes (Pseudomugil furcatus) a top dweller specie, relatively fast. Doesnt have long fins
Planning to increase my Clown Killifish group to 4 again mostly top dweller but comes to bottom time to time, no long fins and fast
6 Pygmy Corydoras, will add 2 when I find
1 juvenile + 1 young L144 Bristlenose
3 juvenile L262 Plecos, size of a pygmy cory

I also have two Rhinogobius at the moment, but they’ll be moved to another tank before adding the Apistos, just to be safe. They are semi-territorial botton dwellers, never saw any aggressiveness but Im not sure how would apistos approach to them. Added a pic of my rhinogobius and L262 to end.

The aquarium has decent amount of caves, and visual barriers, I hope. There’s a Tiger Lotus growing on the left, Rotala filling in the center (will add more), Bacopa between the rocks (will add more), got a coconut cave that Im tryinh to figure out where to put, and I’m aiming for a lush, natural-looking aquascape with tannins that will give it a tea color.

I’ve narrowed my choices down to Apistogramma borellii, agassizii, baenschi, and cacatuoides, but I’m having a hard time deciding. Although Baenschi is my fav one, I’ve heard they require bigger footprint and are more aggressive.

I’m much more interested in personality and behavior than bright colors. I’d love a pair that spends a reasonable amount of time out in the open, shows interesting natural behaviors, and has the potential to breed without turning the whole aquarium into a war zone. Since I already have Pygmy Corydoras and several plecos using the bottom of the tank, I’d also like to avoid a species that’s excessively territorial.

Im open to any suggestions about my aquascape to make it the best for apistos.

For those of you who’ve kept these species long-term, which one would you choose for this setup, and why? I’d especially appreciate hearing about real-world temperament rather than what care sheets say, since I’ve found those often don’t reflect how individual species actually behave in a peaceful community aquarium.

L262 Pleco Frys exploring

Hi all!
Just wanted to share my excitement of seeing all 3 of my little L262s out here ! I was seeing the little one on the driftwood on entrance of his cave time to time or on stone back to it, sucking vertically. The one I show which is at the entrance of its cave was also out there but I spooked him so little guy returned to its cave. That one and the one on driftwood share two sides of that stone and use it structure as caves.

They are really good at hiding, at first I didnt even notice the first one on stone ! I think that guy is standing on dark spot of the stone in purpose.

Now they are all out! It is a joy to watch them, its their 3rd week with me. I think my dark substrate is helping them also my BN Plecos, Pygmy Corys and rhinogobiuses are dithering them.

Is this little guy good in shape ?

My lfs gifted this little guy for my brothers new tank ! This guy is with us for a week now. It should be around 2 months old I think. I’ve been feeding him with tetro pro algae crisps every 2 days, is this guy thinner than it should be ? Or just in good shape ?

Last 2 pic is my little guy, its also from same batch so they are related and my guy is visible bigger and yellower.

Rolling (?) Werneri w clamped fins, help and advice needed

Hi all,
Today I noticed this girl is not swimming good, before I take the video she did few sudden rolling, just one roll and turned back ro swimming then one minute later one more.

She was getting close to filters intake so I’ve closed it for few seconds. She swam away, stopped rolling for a hour or so, then rolled again when I was taking this video. Closed the lights after that and she didnt rolled anymore.

Shes showing her fins sometimes to furcatus or other werneris but really weak. Yet shes still not swimming properly with others, her top fin is kinda clamped but she didnt loose her colors. Shes not eating although kind of look like interested with food.

Other fishes are fine, they are doing displays and all.

Today was my water changing day, so I did %20 after I notice this. 0 ammonia 0 nitrites. What could be the cause ?

Its been a week since I’ve got them. This is Iriatherina Werneri a.k.a threadfin rainbowfish btw.
