Combat Patrol - Reference Companion - V1.0

Hey all,

Posted this about a week ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatPatrol40k/comments/1vhww74/combat_patrol_reference_companion/

All current patrols from the app are now on it - so V1.0 is live, which you can find here:
https://combat-patrol-companion.pages.dev

Summary:

  • All 24 patrols that are on the WH40K app. Data sheets, rules, missions etc.
  • Simplified rule wording, and tags added to explain rules (Eg - Sustained Hits 2 has a tool tip saying exactly what it does).
  • Glossary covering basic rules references.
  • Coming soon list, covering the rest of the patrols that are being added.

Quality of life tools:

  • Switch between light/dark mode.
  • Switch between 10E & 11E patrol rules where they're available for a patrol.
  • Switch between as written, and what is a likely fix (stats, rules etc.)
  • Filter between factions, and editions.
  • Search by faction/patrol name (both plain english and faction names. Eg - Eldar, Aeldari, Ausryani all will show the Aeldari patrols)
  • FAQ/Changelog - covers a few questions, and what exactly I've done in each update.

Whats Next:

  • Adding the 10E patrols
    • Theres still a whopping 48 of them to do.
  • Working out a PDF printable version of the patrols
    • This will take a while. Probably the final task to-do.
  • Release dates & last official updates for a patrol
    • Should be a quick one to do.
  • Copy changes to simplify/improve wording.
    • Particularly rules for 10th edition as they're walls of text.
    • Faction rules are a big one for this.
  • UI improvements for desktop & mobile
    • Ongoing based on feedback, and my own findings.

What won't be added:

  • A match playing tool
    • Thats a whole different project, and would overload whats meant to be a reference tool for factions**,** rules, effects etc.
    • Use the official app for that, or one of the third party tools already out there.
  • Updating 10E factions for 11E where they don't exist.
    • I'm not a playtester. Others in the community have been doing that, and there may well be official versions of those added to the official app at some point.

Why build this?
This is a tool to help people get into combat patrol with simplified wording and all the patrol info in one place to speed up gameplay and referencing. This doesn't replace the official app.

The combat patrols on the app isn't always worded the cleanest, or data is misisng/inaccurate, meaning its a bit clunky to jump through to check things at times. This project also helps those with tablets/laptops instead of having to jump back and forth on mobile.

I built this as a challenge - firstly as a technical challenge, and as a project management challenge both to launch and maintain. From bug hunting, to feature creep... its been a lot, and helped give me a few ways to improve other projects in the future.

Massive thanks to those in the community who managed to save all the PDFs of combat patrols and save them before the 11E release, or this would have just covered the 11E patrols.

Feedback:

If you have feedback, let me know please - whether its a bug, wrong data, feature suggestions, it'll help make this better for anyone using it.

Combat Patrol - Reference Companion

Hey folks,

I needed a tech project for some personal development. My day jobs is primarily UI/UX, not dev work. Aim was to build something that was accessible, quick to use, and I could use it to get used to Cloudflare & GitHub tools.

I decided to use Combat Patrol for it! This doesn't replace the official app, just acts as a simplified, more accessible version for new players for 11th edition.

I'd love people's feedback, if this is actually useful, any bugs you notice, any requests.

I've added a few different combat patrols as examples, and I'm adding a few each day, and making some UI/UX tweaks as I go, this isn't remotely close to the final build.

Current features:

- 6 patrols added (Orks, Space Marines, Eldar, World Eaters, Chaos Daemons, Tyranids)

- Complete datasheets with weapons, abilities, and keywords

- Army rules and detachment rules

- Stratagems and enhancements

- Search by patrol or faction name

- Sort by faction or name (ascending/descending)

- Shareable links for every page

- Changelog tracking updates

Mini of the month - Ork Boy

Based very roughly off Ninjon's scheme he's been using in recent videos - definitely using it going forward for all my Orks.

Phobos Lieutenant

Really enjoyed painting this, first time I've used an airbrush as well for the armour. Hoping Phobos units mostly stick around for 11th edition.

Angels of Death - Ultramarines

Finally completed the team, all transfers on.

Got another box of them to do next - probably be Blood Angels for that one.

Kill Team - Intercessor

The most "basic" one from the Kill Team set, still quite like it.

Blue is Pro Acryl Blue, layered over Ultramarine Blue contrast paint.

Kill Team - Intercessor

Really like the smoke effect on this one, and being able to proxy it as the Intercessor Gunner for Kill Team.

Kill Team - Assault Intercessor

Made an attempt at hazard stripes, calling back to the old 2nd edition artworks.

Ork Weirdboy

Attempted a bit of OSL with magenta speedpaint, but not quite there. Still pretty happy with the final result.

Boss Snikrot

Painted up Boss Snikrot for my LGS 11th edition celebration. Sneakiest of sneaky gitz.

Commissar Yarrick - Old Bale Eye

Completed the Old Man today, wonderful sculpt to work with. Still miss the old school crab claw though.
