Is it dynamics, ghost notes, small timing changes, hi-hat variation, fills, kick placement, or just leaving enough space?

When you’re developing a piece, how do you decide whether the material is strong enough to keep developing, or whether the piece needs a new contrasting idea?
I often find that too much new material makes a piece feel scattered, but too little can make it feel static. Do you usually rely on motif development, harmonic movement, orchestration changes, texture, rhythm, or something else to keep the piece alive?
A lot of hip-hop beats are built around a simple loop, but there’s a thin line between hypnotic and boring.
How do you usually add movement without ruining the vibe?
Do you rely more on drum variation, bass changes, filtering, drops, texture, counter-melodies, vocal chops, or just small arrangement changes every few bars?
I’m trying to find songs that sound modern, electronic, or slightly futuristic, but still feel emotional and human.
