First curly cut made me cry:’)

I had really long, thick wavy/curly hair (and tons of it) and decided I would like to have a U-cut with some layers to bring them out.

Oh my god, I genuinely don’t know what happened because I saw her style my hair strand by strand .. and I’m talking tiny little strands, and then proceeds to add about a golf ball size of mousse to EACH one. I have really porous hair that gets greasy easily anyway and made that known at the beginning.

I decided to trust the process (my hair was already cut way shorter than I wanted but my bad for not being explicit 🤧). I look in the mirror after it’s done and my hair is 1) completely different to how I style it (tiny little strands everywhere) but so much so that I’m flabbergasted and can’t even comprehend how it’ll look when I do it, especially because my hair is just so thick and frizzy (which again I let be known when I was saying how I style it) and 2) there was genuinely SO much product in my hair that when I touched it, my fingers were left with a film on it. It was genuinely like I’d just gotten out a pool or something and also somehow been electrified. It was giving 90/00’s wet look hair but make it just greasy af.

I had plans to go to a cafe and study but I was so upset with my hair and being seen looking so visibly greasy that I stayed home all day after that.

I washed my hair once I got home and styled it the way I said I usually do, and lo and behold…. I look like PS1 Hagrid because of how much hair I have and how much volume it gets :))

Edit: I’ve spent the morning tossing my hair around, trying different up dos, and have come to the conclusion that I can work with this because the layers are actually pretty nice. I’m no Julia Roberts but she kinda slays with all that hair so I’ll just take it in my stride.

As a girl with broad shoulders, my long hair has always been a comfort to me to draw attention away from it, but hopefully this’ll help me accept it a bit more

Joined my first social group but got exoticised by a guy

I moved to a new city about a month ago and was apprehensive about joining any new social activities since I’m pretty shy and socially anxious.

I decided to join a language exchange group which is great for me because I’m a language nerd and I met some really nice girls there which made me feel so much better after having spent a couple of weeks without having a proper conversation with anyone besides my parents on FaceTime.

I went the next week and was so excited to go as it became the highlight of my week after work. I met the same girls and had a lovely chat until they left a bit later in the evening. The group conversation then became me and about 4 or 5 guys who seemed pretty nice and just interested in practicing the language we all study.

At one point some guys left and there was a break in the conversation, others started to talk amongst themselves, and then one guy from the group turned towards me and just started flirting with me super openly. He made a point of talking about how much he loves South America and how much I look Latina (I am not Latina, which he knew, but I’m mixed race and I get mistaken for it a lot of the time). He made a whole point of talking about my dark hair and tanned skin with a huge smile on his face and it made me feel so uncomfortable. He then proceeded to tell me he wanted to travel to Colombia but he had no one to go with and kept asking me (with that same big smile) who I think he should go with.. and I knew the answer he wanted to hear. I’ve known this guy for like 40 mins and he wants me to go to the other side of the world with him… huh?

So I tried to change the topic but I think I made it worse because I’m a people pleaser and I was trying to be cordial, saying I like the group because it’s nice to meet other people (trying to put the emphasis on OTHER people and not just him) but that backfired because he said something like ‘me too, and next time I see you I’m going to be all like ‘hi, [my name] ☺️~~’

It’s such a shame because I really like this group and was so excited to keep coming back but now I’m just stressed I’m going to bump into him again and I’m just going to mess up telling him I’m not interested because I’m such an awkward person and never say the right thing 😩😩🫩🫩

Also to add, the group’s terms state that it’s not a dating event so I thought that was clear enough.. I guess not

EDIT: Forgot to add that he asked me if I was walking home at the end of the night and I basically just got up and left (I pray he got the hint)

How can I let my coworker friend down gently?

I made friends with a coworker for the last year or so who I think seems to be quite lonely outside of work. I really enjoyed talking to them at work because there weren’t many other people I gelled with and we also started to message outside of work, but recently they’ve started to be quite clingy and have been messaging me in ways that seem like they just want my attention (though they have been going through a lot so I can understand that they’re not in the best place right now).

For example, they have tried multiple times to get my address to send me things despite me declining every time and they are quite open about how I’m their favourite coworker which I have reciprocated before (I avoid doing this now). They also tell me often when I’m thinking of quitting that they will quit with me as soon as I do because they can’t do the job without me there, and I even received a cryptic message saying ‘I’m in hospital’ out of the blue one day. When I tried to ask them if they were ok etc, I didn’t get a reply and then later found out they were visiting someone extensively in hospital after a couple days of radio silence.

The thing is, I do appreciate this coworker and their support, but I am now getting to the point where it is too much for me to deal with outside of work and I wish I could revert to when we were just coworkers and nothing more. To keep it short, I’m a pretty anxious avoidant person and the moment someone makes me feel claustrophobic, I immediately need to get away from that situation. I once lived with a girl who did very similar things and I was so glad to get away from that situation, but now I feel like I’m back in another similar situation.. just now I don’t live with them but I still need to interact with them in my daily life. I now feel like I’m this person’s only real friend outside of work (or that’s the feeling I’m getting at least) which worries me because it just feels like more pressure on me and my efforts to pull away keep being stopped by me wanting to make sure they’re ok, to which they then get clingy because I’m looking out for them and the cycle continues.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can try to pull away without straight up ignoring them? We have one mutual friend at work who I talk to often but is unaware of how I feel about the other coworker and I worry continuing to talk to them will cause a rift. I just feel awful because I feel quite uncomfortable with this friendship now, but they’re going through some mental stuff and I would feel awful not being there for them.. I just don’t know what to do

Would you prioritise making friends over dating when moving to a new city?

I (F mid 20s) just moved to a new city and haven’t made any friends yet but I’ve been wanting to date.

I currently live alone so the thought of dating without any friends nearby is a bit weird since I at least had friends and/or family nearby which made me feel safe. Obviously it’s not the safest thing for a woman to live alone in general so it’s been playing in my head.

I’m still working at making friends outside of my FT job but have been wanting to date- partially due to a lot of my friends being in serious relationships at this age but also because I’ve always been quite avoidant in dating and now feel like I’m at a good point in my life to go for it.

Is it more sensible to wait until I find some solid friends in the city or is it worth just going out and dating already? Apologies if this is just a load of overthinking 😅

What kind of jobs have helped you avoid burnout?

I work a corporate job which I absolutely hate and I’ve been off for a while recently with stress, burnout and insomnia which has been exacerbated by the job. I can’t take more time off for my health but I get so overwhelmed and frustrated by corpo life that I think it’s time I bit the bullet and left.

I’d really like to know what kind of jobs have helped you ladies stay sane and actively interested in the work because corporate makes me question my whole life and I cannot do this for however many more decades I have left 😔

Friend won’t reply to texts but will send me short form content

My friend is chronically online (it’s even easier to see exactly when with instagram’s ‘online’ feature) and yet will take 2 days up to a week to reply to my text messages.

I completely understand that no one should be reachable 24/7 because I agree, but being sent reels or tiktoks instead makes me feel like she just doesn’t care to reply to my texts.

For context, I was addicted to social media as a young teen up until my mid twenties and have put blocks on my apps so I don’t get carried away for hours. I’ve been vocal about this with my friend and even told her as a pre requisite that I don’t reply to any short form content or messages on social media apps as they make me unable to leave the app due to having to keep checking them to see if I’ve received new messages etc etc. So she knows I won’t reply, but sends them anyway even though I’ve said it’s boundary for me.

At the same time, I will never get a reply to my text messages when I know she’s on her phone and it makes me feel like I’m only really there to send memes to and actual conversation is a struggle… am I overreacting?
