How skills level up ?

Hey guys, I'm checking out the Cairn RPG system and I really liked it, but I have a question about character progression. How do skills or stats level up? I know it's a rules-lite game, but do characters get stronger after some sessions or is it just about getting better loot and gold? Thanks!

I am tired of annotate, roll dice and read spoilers from books. I made my own cairn system implementation and IA. great moments of my character.

Cairn brought me back to the hobby – and I’m loving every brutal second of it!

My intro was D&D, but by the second session, I felt like I was managing a spreadsheet instead of having fun. Too much XP tracking, endless monster stat blocks, and bookkeeping that pulled me away from the game.

Then I found Cairn.

It’s crude, brutal, and simple – exactly what I needed. No bloat. No fiddly numbers. Just fast, lethal, and narrative-driven play. And the best part? The system is so flexible I can run almost any setting with it.

My only hope is that the author keeps this philosophy alive – because it’s working. Big time.

If you’re burned out on heavy systems or just want to try something fresh, give Cairn a look. I’m having an absolute blast.

Anyone else here made the jump from trad systems to Cairn (or other OSR/NSR games)? What was your experience?

first FUBAR intro game. Need advice on units, terrain, and gear setup!

Hey everyone,

I recently discovered FUBAR and I'm super excited to try it out! I want to run a quick introductory game (aiming for about 40 to 60 minutes) to teach a friend, but I could really use some guidance on how to set everything up.

Since I don't own official miniatures, I'll be improvising completely with what I have at home: Lego bricks for the soldiers/vehicles and tokens for markers.

As a total beginner to the system, I want to make sure the game runs smoothly and doesn't get bogged down. I’d love to get your advice on the following:

  1. Is FUBAR a good system to start ?

  2. Unit Size & Quantity: For a 1-hour game, how many units should each player control? And how many models/figures should be in each unit?

  3. Terrain & Cover: Since the game has rules for Soft, Moderate, and Hard cover, what is a good amount of terrain to build out of Lego for a standard table? How do you usually balance the battlefield so it's fun and tactical?

  4. Weapons & Armour: How should I distribute weapons and armor for a first game? Is it better to mix things up, or keep everyone identical? How do you guys visually track different weapons and armor types when using generic proxies like Lego?

  5. Best Intro Scenario: What is the best and simplest objective/scenario to run for a short, fast-paced introductory match?

Any tips, house rules, or advice for a beginner using Lego to play FUBAR would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
