The shrimp seller gave me some extra java moss with my purchase. I don't know what to do with them yet. Any ideas are welcome.
It seems that excessive lighting over the past week might be the cause. Could this be Staghorn Algae? I have 3% hydrogen peroxide and intend to dilute it with water at a 1:10 ratio for a one-minute soak outside the tank. Would this concentration be too low or too high?
It's a 2-month tank.

Plan to add some neo shrimps, an amano shrimp.

Gravel substrate, some floaters only. Do I need to cycle? What is it for?
I have 4 guppies in a 5 gallon tank. I had a nitrite spike before but now I have another issue. Nitrate is extremely low. I feed fish twice a day. I have 5 SMALL stems of hornwort. I took 3 out today. The hornwort stems are very small. Could it cause low nitrate in my tank? What is your experience with hornwort? The stems are VERY SMALL.
I'm thinking of java moss and susswassertangs
My tank completed its cycle after a month. Now nitrate is low at 1-2ppm. I took out floating plants but that didn't help. I have 4 male gyppies, feeding a small amount daily, do I need to increase to 6-8 guppies?
Do you attach plants to it?
It's doing its job for my tank btw.
After the tank is cycled, nitrate is near 0 while I don't have too many plants at all. The tank has 4 guppies and feeding them daily small amount. Should I worry about it?
I would keep it because the fish love it. What can I do to replace the plastic leaves with the real Java Fern?
My guppies need more oxygen so I've been using air pump recently. My old one was extremely loud, and I was really when it stopped working lol. I bought this from Walmart because of good reviews and am extremely happy because I can't hear it at all! Only $10. This is for 5-15gal, it has one bigger size too.
Day 5 of the spike and after stocking 4 guppies in a 5 gallon tank. Changing 30% of water every day.
I have 4 guppies in a 5 gal 3 week tank.
How many flakes should I normally feed 4 guppies a day?
How many flakes should I feed them right now during this nitrite spike (reduced amount)?
5-gallon tank started on June 7. Planted on day 2, but plants were soaked in untreated water for ~1 day before I dechlorinated.
Setup: Top Fin HOB (10 gal rated) + sponge + filter sheet + lava rocks. Tap water (Kansas). Tested with Dipstick strips.
Did ghost feeding with goldfish flakes for ~10 days.
Plants were melting hard at first (vallisneria, pearl weed, java fern, susswassertang), plus duckweed. Recently added some frogbit.
June 20 (day 13): did a 30% water change, then added 4 guppies.
June 22 (day 15): nitrate ~25 mg/L, nitrite ~1 mg/L. Fish acting normal.
June 23: nitrite jumped to ~5 mg/L(estimated), fish started hanging near the surface. Did a 30% water change, nitrite still ~2 mg/L(estimated) after, nitrate still ~25 mg/L. Fish looked better after that.
June 24: did another 30% water change and removed the fine filter sheet that was clogged with decaying plant matter. Added ~20 frogbit babies.
Right now I’m dealing with nitrite spikes in a probably uncycled tank. Fish are still alive and mostly okay, but I’m doing frequent water changes even though the water looks clear and has no smell since the fish were added.
Any advice on stabilizing this without stressing them more? Also, what’s the typical nitrite tolerance for guppies from local breeders?
One more weird thing: after I turn the lights off around 3 PM, when I test again around 8 PM, pH, total alkalinity, and carbonate hardness all appear to drop significantly (below the “safe” range on my test strips). Has anyone seen this before, or could it be a testing issue?
