I want to swap for "better" credit cards.
57 years old. 750 credit score. I have 4 credit cards (all at zero balance after paying my bills each month) that basically have no cash back or rewards and I know I can do better. They are 12, 11, 8, and 6 years old. I want to instead get cards with things like cash back on any purchase anywhere, cash back on gasoline, cash back on groceries, cash back on restaurants. Things like that. I'm not looking for suggestions for which cards to get. That I will research on my own and decide for myself.
What I want to know is should I swap these cards all 4 at once when I know which cards I want? Or should I swap them individually over a period of time? I'm looking for the easiest hit to my credit in terms of lowest decrease of my FICO score and most efficient build back to what my score is now or even higher. Would either swapping option give me a softer hit to my score? I would do it either way depending on what works better for me.
Also, I know I'm taking a hit by getting rid of accounts with age to them. I suppose I can just keep them and open new cards, but I dont want to have that many cards to worry about. Plus, if I freeze the cards I have now to keep old accounts open and just use the new cards, won't the frozen cards get canceled due to inactivity? Please advise. Thanks.
