Anyone go see Cat Power at Chautauqua a bit ago?

I really like Cat Power and would love to see her in concert. I saw her for free at the Boulder bandshell on Canyon about 22 years ago, maybe. She was amazing.

I then paid to see her at the Boulder Theater a few years later, and it was horrendous. She cut off songs halfway, messed with the arrangements, walked off stage, etc. I think at one point she lit a cigarette and just sat there smoking. I walked out, something I very, very rarely ever do.

I didn't want to risk paying to see her again, but I realize that people change and maybe she's a better performer now.

Anyone who went- how was it?

Frankfurt am 1. Januar

I'm planning on meeting up with a couple friends in Frankfurt on January 1st. They have two small children, one aged 4 and one 6 months. We will probably go out to eat or something, but can you think of anything else good to do that would...

  • be open on January 1st
  • not be weather-dependent
  • be a decent activity for a 4 year-old boy? (the baby will probably just nap or whatever)

Pausing Movies

Did you know they can pause a movie?

I went to see Ice Cream Man in Westminster, CO yesterday (not a great movie, btw). Five minutes in, these two women walk in. They're probably drunk and trying to find their seat. They are talking to each other loudly, trying to hear each other over the movie. One whips out her phone full on, not even trying to find the light. Of course, they're sitting right next to me.

They sit down and continue to talk full volume to one another. I leaned over and said "Could you please stop talking." The woman looked at me and said, "Maybe I'll stop if you stop asking." and continued to talk.

I got up to leave, but there wound up being three ushers in the hall, so I just told them and went back into the movie. Walking back to my seat, the woman pulled out her phone, turned on her camera with flash, took a picture of me and said that I assaulted her.

Ushers came in once to tell them to stop talking, but they continued to talk. Another person went out to complain and the ushers came back (maybe with a head usher if that's a thing? He looked older) who told them that they were going to pause the movie and that the women were going to need to leave. The usher was actually really good at deescalating the situation. The woman informed him that I had assaulted her, and he just politely said that her money would be refunded and he'd be happy to hear her side of the story outside the theater. She said she would only leave once the movie was paused.

They paused it, and the two women made a big showing of slowly getting up, checking to make sure they didn't leave anything and walking out. People clapped and yelled thank you to the ushers. It was that bad.

Anyway, just know that they'll pause the movie for a theater if they need to get rid of someone! Never seen that before, but I'm glad to know it's an option.

If you have a ton of small coins....

I travel to Berlin frequently and always wind up amassing a ton of Euro coins. I spend off the 1 and 2 Euro ones pretty easily, but I get stuck with 1 cent, 2 cent, 10, cent, 20 cent coins that I don't like carrying around so they just sit in an ever-growing pile at home.

On my last trip I found that Rewe (at least the Rewe on Invalidenstrasse) allows you to pay in small coins at the self-checkout. You can literally just dump handfuls of coins into the thing and pay for your groceries.

It's not every Rewe. I tried it at a different one and they said it was card only at self checkout. Even at the one I was at, it was only three of the six machines or something like that.

Just a small tip that's hopefully helpful to someone!

Dried in Fabric Softener Stains- Is there any hope?

I've been using a Downy Ball, and, for whatever reason, it's been leaving stains on my clothes that are very apparent on white t-shirts. It took me a while to figure out what was staining things, and I now have shirts that have been through the washer and the dryer multiple times. Are these stains set in for good? Is there any hope?

Theater Doors Open?

I went to see The Invite yesterday morning in Westminster, Colorado. Towards the end of the film, when there were a few quieter moments, you could clearly hear noise from the hallway- people leaving the theater as well as other films in other theaters.

When I left after the movie, I saw that there was an inner door to the auditorium as well as an outer door. Both were propped open. Walking out to my car, I noticed that the door to every other theater was open as well. This didn't make much sense to me. Why aren't they all just closed all the time?

Does anyone know why the theater would do this?

[Japanese > English] shirt I want to buy

I don’t need the exact words translated since it’s a lot, but I’m wondering if it’s correct Japanese or just Google Translate or AI slop.

What’s the deal with the people collecting signatures outside King Soopers?

As a general rule, I just smile and say “no thank you” to anyone standing outside of anywhere who wants anything from me. They said something about gerrymandering to me this morning outside the Table Mesa KS, but I’ve heard it’s also a scam? Anyone talk more in depth with these folks and know what their deal is?

Is it legal for a motorcycle to do this?

Speed aside, is passing on the line like this legal? I know motorcycles are allowed to move to the front between cars at stop lights, but can they do this?

Who are some really engaged, friendly live metal performers?

I've gotten into metal and metal shows recently, and have been to a ton of shows in the last year or so. Not going to diss any bands, but some just kinda got up there, played a handful of songs and stepped down. Maybe it was an off night or something, but some of them didn't really seem to want to be there or care about their performance at all.

I did, however, see a number of bands that seemed really into their show and were, on top of that, super nice.

Sacred Reich was a great example of this. The lead singer was really chatty with the crowd, seemed very grateful that people had come out to the show, and seemed to be having a good time.

Cryptopsy was another good example. I hadn't really listened to their music before, but the lead singer was really engaging and came out to shake hands with fans after the show.

I really like supporting bands that like what they're doing and like their fans. Anyone have other good examples?

[Japanese > English] text on what I think is a doormat

Google said this was “I’m sorry, but please start over from the beginning, downwards.” The “downwards” part doesn’t make sense in English. Is there a better translation? Does anyone understand the context or what this thing is?

What's the Best Value Happy Hour in Boulder?

Sort of fallen off of my happy hour game. I feel like there used to be so many good deals in Boulder, but it kinda went away with the pandemic. Now it seems like bars' happy hours consist of a couple of overpriced cocktails and sides.

What's the cheapest beer/wine/food you can get at a bar/restaurant in Boulder for happy hour. I don't care if it's Coors Light or some basic house wine or whatever. Just wondering what the best deal is.

Would You Feel Safe Wearing a Kippah in Berlin?

I've been to Berlin many, many times, but I can only think of one occasion where I've seen a person on the street randomly in clothing that would identify them as Jewish. I know Berlin is popular with Israelis, and I've definitely heard Hebrew around and have met Jews in Berlin, but I never see people who visibly identify as Jewish.

To be honest, I don't think I would feel safe wearing a kippah in Berlin on public transport or in places where there are a ton of people (like Alexanderplatz). I would be fine wearing one in restaurants and museums and the like, but anywhere in the general public, especially at night, would be a little dicey for me.

Am I just overthinking this or do people who live and spend more time in Berlin feel this way too?
