Minute Museum: a new painting every minute on the r1

I made a little internet-connected art frame for the r1 called Minute Museum. It shows a portrait-oriented, public-domain or CC0 painting every 60 seconds, preloads the next image, and crossfades between works. The whole painting fits on the screen against black.

Tap the screen or press the side button to see the title, artist, date, and source. Tap or press again for the artwork alone. The wheel moves forward or back through recent works.

The sources span museums across the world.

Beginner reading practice at Hello, Shavian!

Did you know the Hello, Shavian! site has a Practice Room you can use alongside the video course?

Choose a lesson, read a Shavian word, and type what it says in ordinary spelling to check your answer. Each lesson’s practice uses only letters introduced up to that point, so you can start small and build your reading confidence as you go.

The Practice Room is free, and you can keep going for as long as you like: https://orcachuckle.com/helloshavian/#practice-room

*Hello, Shavian!* is now a free, all-in-one Shavian learning portal

𐑣𐑧𐑤𐑴!

I recently shared the beginnings of Hello, Shavian!, a free beginner video course. All lessons are now available!

I’m also excited to announce that the project has grown well beyond a YouTube playlist. A full Shavian learning portal is now live:

https://orcachuckle.com/helloshavian

It’s built to be a single, welcoming place where someone can start with no knowledge of Shavian and work towards reading complete stories, all at their own pace.

Everything on the site is free. There are no accounts, subscriptions, or paywalls of any kind.

A view of the Hello, Shavian! site

What is included:

  • An introduction video. An initial explainer opens the door to Shavian and leads into the course.
  • A structured 16-lesson course. Letters are introduced gradually through useful words, phrases, messages and scenes, building towards a complete Shavian story.
  • A free 71-page course workbook. A course companion follows all 16 lessons with writing practice, reading exercises, space for the video prompts and a complete answer section.
  • Built-in video lessons. Watch inside the portal, move directly to the next lesson and mark lessons as watched when you are ready.
  • Private progress tracking. Your watched lessons are saved in your own browser. No login or account needed.
  • A lesson notepad. Keep separate notes for every lesson, saved automatically in your browser, and download them all as a plain-text backup whenever you like.
  • A full on-screen Shavian keyboard. The Shaw QWERTY layout includes all 48 letters, Shift and Latin layers, punctuation, numbers, the namer dot and mobile-friendly controls. You can use it in your notes and in the dictionary.
  • The Read Lexicon built into the site. Search more than 110,000 source entries in Latin or Shavian, see pronunciation information, copy results, or insert a word directly into your lesson notes. Searches happen locally in your browser.
  • A word game you can play immediately, even as a complete beginner. The six easy letters you need are shown right beside the game, and every round uses only those letters. You can start matching real Shavian words before taking your first lesson, with no timer and no pressure.
  • Built-in reading practice. Choose any lesson and transcribe Shavian words using only letters introduced up to that point. The cumulative word banks do not repeat a spelling until every one has appeared, and all dictionary homophones are accepted.
  • A complete alphabet reference. View all 48 letters and their sounds beside any lesson, open the full-size chart, or download the printable PDF.
  • A collection of extra Shavian resources. When you are ready to explore beyond the course, the portal gives you direct paths to *Shaw & Tell* and its 25 narrated, interactive fables; the *Reading Shavian Words* graded-practice videos; Joro.io's guides, typing and transliteration tools; and Shavian.info's history, guidance, books, fonts, keyboards, dictionaries and community links.
  • Phone and desktop support. The portal is designed to work comfortably on either.

This project has taken a substantial amount of time, care and out-of-pocket resources to make, but I’d like the course and its learning materials to remain free for everyone. Trying the course, sharing it with someone who might enjoy it, or simply making use of the materials is already a wonderful form of support. If you’d also like to help cover costs, a small tip can be left for my utmost gratitude.

I hope Hello, Shavian! gives the alphabet the inviting, complete starting point it deserves.

Enjoy the course!

Hello, Shavian! — a new beginner video course

𐑣𐑧𐑤𐑴!

I’m putting together Hello, Shavian!, a free beginner video course designed to take someone from knowing nothing about the alphabet to reading complete Shavian stories.

The course introduces letters gradually through useful words and phrases, with regular practice lessons along the way.

  • Read your first Shavian word after learning just two letters
  • Learn each new letter through useful words and phrases
  • Practise seeing, saying, reading and writing as you go
  • Build from individual words to messages and short scenes
  • Finish by reading and understanding a complete Shavian story

Full course playlist:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNCKSth92eDg

I hope it gives newcomers another enjoyable way to get started with Shavian.
