AOL and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar failed at reforming Indian purity culture of classism/ casteism

Given the enormous power Sri Sri Ravi Shankar had over many Indian ppl, he did not display the radical courage needed to change the set ways Indians think about menial work and cleaning which is so deeply tied to purity, class and caste. It was a huge opportunity, wasted.

I'll give an example.

When I did my first TTC1 in Canadian ashram, my TTC teacher, Michael Fischman had us cleaning the public restrooms in the ashram as our seva. When one person said 'I am from IIT, I don't need to do this', he was solely tasked with cleaning the men's restroom every single day. Now, Michael Fischman is a despicable person (my personal opinion) in many ways, but this was a truly admirable thing to do.

I came home overawed at the goodness in AOL, it has long been a problem with Indian society that 'educated' ppl refused to do menial work like cleaning restrooms. I was so happy AOL was busting those boundaries.

But then I went to India, and guess what I saw.

Indian course participants never had to clean Bangalore ashram restrooms as their seva. There was a separate cleaning staff.

What a huge opportunity Art of Living and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar wasted, to educate and reform Indian society.

The boundaries they spoke abt busting in DSN and TTC, should have been these boundaries. Instead they mindlessly indulged in more marketing of courses, more pyramid schemes and more fundraising.

A chance at greatness.... lost.

[OC] Thinking of a social media - volunteer cleanup app - called Main Hoon Na

I want to make an app called Main Hoon Na. It will be a social media/ networking app for those who want to volunteer their time for clean up in India. Ppl can log their cleanups, or schedule cleanups, that other ppl can respond to and join in. They can post before and after pictures. This includes small solo cleanups as well, so that we don't always have to wait for other ppl to join in before we start taking action.

But it will help create a sense of community for those who volunteer their time to clean up so that they feel supported and encouraged.

I honestly believe that the only way to change things is by giving our own time and energy. I was really inspired by this Irish guy who came to Jaipur, fell in love with the ancient wells and dedicated his life to cleaning them. https://www.instagram.com/p/DaSmKs8tsC3/?hl=en

Pls give your feedback, is this something you would like to use?

How will the FCRA bill impact Art of Living?

When I was involved with Art of Living a few years back, enormous amounts of money would be raised in programs like TTC (Teacher training ) in the USA, with no accountability and no explanation as to where the money would be going. (Except for saying that 'Gurudev' himself would decide how this donation was to be used - that was supposed to settle all questions)

For example, the TTC fees were $5000, for a 2-3 week program. Additionally, during TTC, participants would spend all their time on registering ppl for AOL programs, and a fund-raising project.

The TTC that I attended, I would say that I saw many ppl give $3000, and this was matched in many cases by the companies they worked for. So now, in a course of 150 ppl, you can do the math as to how much money was raised in just 2 weeks, for a cause which participants were not even informed about.

Additionally, volunteers who worked for companies like Microsoft could enter their volunteer hours, and Microsoft would donate $20 to AOL for each volunteer hour. So if an Microsoft employee who was also an AOL teacher spent 15 hrs a week organising and teaching the course, AOL would get $300, apart from course fees. Given that several ppl would spent enormous amts of time volunteering for AOL, the dollars added up pretty fast.

Some provisions that I like in FCRA are:

-Funds should go into only those projects that they are collected for. eg, AOL cannot collect funds for Care for children, and then redirect those funds somewhere else. While "purpose diversion" was always banned on paper, the pre-2026 system suffered from weak regulatory tracking, making it easier for large NGOs to mingle general donor pools. The 2026 framework eliminates this flexibility entirely by introducing:

  • Mandatory Project-Wise Reporting: AOL must now map out exact activity-wise utilization in their annual returns, explicitly proving that money meant for free schools went specifically to those schools.
  • Ultimate Donor Disclosures: Every single international micro-donation or dollar-a-day child sponsorship must be explicitly traceable from the point of origin straight to the end project.

- Annual returns must now explicitly disclose project-wise spending, activity-wise utilization, the identities of ultimate foreign donors, and verified links to the organization's official websites and social media accounts.

- Blanket, nationwide approvals for foreign funding will no longer be valid. The organization will have to register and log the exact activities and the specific States/UTs where incoming foreign funds are intended to be deployed

- The management and trustees can be held personally liable for regulatory non-compliance or accounting errors.

Given the discrepencies I have observed in AOL and its fundraising, I think FCRA would be excellent for strengthening accountability and transperency.

What is your opinion about this study? : "70% of Women in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai Missing From the Cities’ Streets, Finds Study"

What is ur opinion about this study? https://thewire.in/women/70-of-women-in-mumbai-navi-mumbai-missing-from-the-cities-streets-finds-study

I grew up in Mumbai and I do think that Mumbai gives women a lot of freedom and independence. Do you think factors like weather/ pollution affect the likelihood of women being out and about on the streets? Of course, the issue of molestation is rampant, esp on busy roads/locals, but in my experience, that does not deter women from going about their daily tasks outside.

What do you do to help ur kids navigate anti-Indian stereotypes?

Whether we like it or not, Indian kids in school do face casual racism eg

-Indians eat with their hands

-Indians poop outside

-Making fun of the accent etc

What do folks do to educate children abt these stereotypes?

Instagram post about sexual harassment in Art of Living

https://www.instagram.com/p/Cq634oFg7Jd/?hl=en

Translation :

We left the "Art of Living" cult and are freer and more awakened than ever. This live video tells how we, four women who were victims of systematic abuse within Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's worldwide organization, managed to free ourselves from that prison without bars.

On April 9, 2022, after being manipulated by Ravi Shankar (self-proclaimed Guru of Peace) to prevent us from revealing the sexual abuse perpetrated by his right-hand man, Swami Paramtej, we outraged and LEFT THE CULT. We're here to tell you how it happened, the secrets of this INTERNATIONAL NGO, and that it is possible to be very happy without following any Guru on the spiritual path ❤️
Thanks to u/lunacordobav
We recommend watching "The Luckiest Girl on Earth" starring Mila Kunis on Netflix, and also the documentary "Wild Wild Country," especially if you are in an institution that claims to be spiritual and is led by a Master or Mistress.

(To find out how the sexual abuse occurred and to see the video of the Zoom meeting with Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar where he incriminates himself, please see my highlights "ART OF LIVING")

From Devotion to Disillusion: An Art of Living Volunteer and Teacher Trainee’s Story

Leena Joynat, a former Art of Living Volunteer who completed her VTP and took the Sri Sri Yoga Teacher Training, shares her experience of disillusionment with the Art of Living. Below is her experience as shared on Trustpilot.

I completed the Happiness Program (2017), Advanced Silence Course, Sri Sri Yoga Teacher Training (2018) + Level 2, Blessings Program, Volunteer Training Program (VTP), Shakti Kriya, and countless satsangs and follow-up events. I showed up fully, practiced sincerely, and genuinely wanted to share these tools. What I experienced instead was a clear hierarchy: I was never “whole enough” or “Indian
enough” to be approved as a Sri Sri Yoga teacher or to lead Happiness Courses. The message was consistent — attend more courses, do more Kriya, volunteer more. My trauma and sense of displacement were never acknowledged; they were met with “just keep doing the practices.” In 2021, during an Art of Living yoga event, I was ejected from a vehicle and left on a motorway in heavy rain, with fast-moving traffic and no safe way to retrieve my belongings. No one from the organization followed up to check on my safety or wellbeing. Instead, decisions were made based on one-sided accounts, and my reputation was affected without due process. In March 2024, I attempted to return and teach yoga sessions for Kriya follow-ups, in full compliance with their requirements — maintaining a clear separation from my own yoga and Ayurveda work and agreeing to sign the relevant UK and European teaching agreements. When I raised the 2021 incident and asked for basic accountability and respect, the response focused on administrative steps rather than addressing the
safeguarding concern.

I was told that attempts had been made to contact me, that “both sides were damaged,” and that “there’s nothing we can do now except allow you to sign the agreements and teach.” This response reflected a lack of accountability and a failure to engage with the seriousness of the incident. In 2025, I continued attending Kriya programs elsewhere, hoping for a different experience. Unfortunately, similar patterns emerged. During one event, another participant scratched my car. When I raised this, the response was not to investigate or resolve the situation, but to reassure me that the individual “would never do such a thing,” and to offer an apology only if I felt hurt. There was no accountability, no attempt to address the damage, and no formal handling of the incident.I was again encouraged to “accept people and situations as they are.” In practice, this meant that harmful behaviour was minimised rather than addressed.

This reflects a broader issue in the teachings. There is a strong emphasis on acceptance and not questioning others’ intentions, but this can come at the cost of accountability. Harmful behaviour is often reframed or dismissed instead of being properly addressed. While these teachings may be suitable for individuals seeking basic wellbeing support, I found them to be potentially harmful for those with significant trauma. Encouraging unconditional acceptance without accountability can reinforce unsafe environments rather than resolve them.

In my experience, this approach prioritises spiritual ideals over basic human responsibility. Instead of empowering individuals to process and address harm, it can lead to avoidance and emotional suppression. The organisation presents itself as upholding principles of equality and inclusion. However, in my experience, access to opportunities appeared shaped by informal hierarchies rather than transparent or consistent criteria, with limited support when concerns were raised.

After years of commitment, I realised my training and wellbeing were being treated as conditional — something to be permitted rather than respected. I chose not to sign the agreements. This is not the “stress-free, violence-free” community that is advertised. While the practices may help some people, if you are looking for trauma-informed support, fairness, and genuine inclusion — this may not be the right environment.

JGD — but not anymore.Leena Joynat (Sri Sri Yoga Teacher Training 2018)

When Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's desperation for fame & recognition led him to hug Yasin Malik - now a charged rapist/ murderer

Anyone remembers this?

Sri Sri's 'mediation' effort in Kashmir which led to him 'hugging' Yasin Malik?

Now Yasin Malik has been charged as the prime accused in the murder and rape of Sarla Bhat.

I wonder how Sri Sri's much-lauded intuition and enlightenment did not tell him that he was actually hugging a rapist and murderer?

OC - Equipment malfunction in USA flight - some musings about civic sense

I flew in to the USA from London last month in a flight which had several elderly Indian parents in it. . There were fumes in the aircraft's back cabin bcos of an equipment malfunction while we were over the Atlantic and the flight turned back and landed in Scotland where we were stuck for a day until the plane was repaired.

Many people probably did not understand what was happening when the announcement was made. We were given strict instructions to stay in our seat, and follow emergency protocols, but many Indian older ppl were repeatedly walking down the aisle.

The air hostesses were extremely frightened and stressed and were screaming at them to be seated, but they did not seem to get it. Some ppl had language issue, they were not able to understand English, that may have been the reason why.

But this just added to the overall panic.

The flight did land safely, but I felt it is extremely important for us to make sure that our parents have a travelling companion when they fly esp when they r very elderly or have issues with understanding English. A lot of elderly ppl had a very hard time, and that was difficult to see.

In some cases though, the refusal to follow directions even in an emergency seemed like it came from a lack of caring instead of a misunderstanding.

After landing in Scotland, while we were standing in line for our hotel, a non-indian person who was using 2 crutches to walk, stood with us in line. I and a couple other Indian women entreated him to go to the front of the line, bcos we could see he would be in pain after standing for so long. But he refused, saying ppl ahead of him would get angry.

Now contrast this with the Indian aunty-uncle, who did not hesitate to jump the line while boarding the aircraft from Scotland to the USA, even thought they were in perfectly fine physical condition.

This post was deleted from a couple of FB grps, after I started getting angry comments asking me to be grateful that I was alive instead of complaining. Someone also suggested that Indian ppl jump the line bcos they grew up in a scarcity situation.

Sorry, the ppl who jump lines are not always struggling, in India u can see plenty of middle-class ppl following rules, while those who are more privileged do not.

Thanks for reading.

Our experience with international schools in India

I lived in India for 4 yrs, my children went to a very expensive international school in Bengaluru. My children did not share much while they were in India, but share more now, after we returned to the USA. My elder one completed high school in this IGCSE/IB school, and my younger one studied there from 4-7 grade.

The one thing which was easily obvious was the immense stress. The curriculum, even for a school which claimed to implement IB/ be based on IGCSE, relied a lot on information to be memorised than on projects or true understanding, esp in science. Being constantly on top of every little thing which was being taught was a must for parents, esp for those whose children were not naturally well-organised.

This school had an impressive list of USA and UK univs where their students got admitted, so that was what drew us to it. And frankly, it did work for my daughter, as she got admission in a very good univ along with a substantial scholarship.

But the general atmosphere in school was harsh and toxic and not respectful to students, to say the least.

My younger one experienced bullying which was glossed over by the teachers bcos the students who were the bullies belonged to influential families with contacts.

There was a general attitude of we-know-best or disrespect. for example, the school's trustees are non-christian, but the principals were christian. There would be regular bible readings in this school, which was extremely disrespectful, as parents sent their children to this school, thinking it was secular. In fact my children said that christianity was pushed much more on them in India than they have experienced in the USA.

There were very good and caring teachers too, my elder one made good Indian friends, who she is still in touch with. But I could not complain to the principal if my children faced issues as my elder one said that their college admission depended on teacher recommendations.

Another thing I noticed was how the admission counseller insisted that we apply to T20s and private colleges, and was perplexed when I said that we prefer a good in-state univ, bcos of the tuition. These counsellers force kids to apply to expensive, top private univs , as that acts like a marketing tool for the school to attract new parents.

So my suggestion if u r planning to move to India would be, to speak with parents in the school u r planning to send ur child to. Don't just prioritise good college admissions, but also prioritise a healthy environment.

Edit: It was not bible readings during assembly time, it was Christian-style prayers.

How social media praise in Art of Living distorts AOL volunteer's perception of reality - part 1

Right before I left Art of Living, I had a couple of experiences which led me to realise how I had become locked into an echo chamber and had lost touch with reality.

My first experience was when a certain rishi passed away. After his passing away, when I opened facebook, my entire feed was filled with tributes to him, calling him the greatest devotee, the greatest teacher, the greatest sevak. Heaping, effusive, non-stop praise by all my AOL friends (and I had about 600 of them)

That was very jarring to me, bcos I had heard from one of those very friends how this rishi had cheated on his wife and had even got a girl pregnant. Something felt very off, and I called up a senior female teacher, and asked her why were AOL volunteers praising this man to the heavens when he had been so problematic.

What if a newcomer actually believed false praise and trusted ppl they ought to never trust?

One thing led to another, and I quit AOL. This small incident made me realise how my life in AOL had become one big lie.

I had to praise AOL, Sri Sri, Bhanu, AOL courses, techniques, volunteers and teachers whether they deserved praise or not. I had to do it in public and on social media, bcos that is what was being expected of me, from my AOL social network. The line between truth and lies had become so blurry that I no longer believed in myself and my own perceptions of people and reality.

Because my perceptions were being shaped by my echo chamber, if I criticised anyone, I felt guilty bcos I was not being 'positive' enough.

I had another experience with a youth programs TTC teacher at this time. This person was looked upon as a very senior teacher, close to 'gurudev', blessed beyond belief. He seemed calm, collected, serene and centered. All of us volunteers believed the very best of him, believed he was far more spiritually advanced than us, bcos that is the way AOL presented him. His social media posts had hundreds of likes, were filled with glowing comments, priasing him and his wonderful work for humanity. I felt small in comparison.

It so happened that I started working at a we-work where this TTC teacher would work at . I spoke with him about coding, and he described some great s/w projects that he and another teacher were working on. He introduced me to another developer in that we-work, suggesitng we work together on his project. But when I spoke with this developer, who was not involved in Art of Living, that developer had a very poor view of this AOL TTC teacher. It seemed that this AOL ttc teacher would talk grandiosely as if he had amazing, solid projects to work on, but nothing would ever materialise. He would simply leave ppl hanging w/o having any concrete projects in hand.

This suddenly made me realise, that senior teacher who are praised to heavens in AOLwas looked upon as unethical by his collegue according to the standards of the external world.

This again shook me, I realised to what extent I had become influenced by my echo chamber, that what was unethical in the external world, seemed to be something I had to accept bcos the person doing it was a 'highly evolved' AOL teacher.

There are times in one's life when the social conditioning, the peer pressure and the lies fall off, and one can actually give oneself the permission to think and feel our actual thoughts, unbounded by social expectations.

I got a clear glimpse into how the AOL cult had controlled my life, and with that one glimpse, I left AOL, knowing I would never look back again.

The worst thing is to be cheated and then be told that one must be grateful for having a positive experience. My one wish is that AOL volunteers understand this one truth, that their time, money and life is being used for someone's else's profit, and they are so blinded by their echo chamber that they are actually grateful for this.

The Adventures of the 'happy swami'

So this post is based on what I could glean from AOL's rumor mill + actual statements I have heard from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Writing this post to illustrate how the top echelons of AOL work, where misdeeds matter only when it hurts the bottom line, and infinite lies are told to preserve non-existent reputations.

Long time ago, in a beautiful AOL ashram in North America, there was bought in a swami. Tall, radiant, fun and seemingly kind, he was the apple of all of us TTC student's eyes. When he sang bhajans, tears of devotion flowed.

We heard someone say that he was bought in bcos he was an accountant to fix the ashram's financial difficulties. This was hard for us young and naive TTC1 ppl to believe, after all, weren't we sacrificing our time and money to do 'seva', in order to save the world from stress? But of course we trusted Sri Sri and believed that he had to attend to practical matters also.

Then after a few years, Sri Sri announced in a summer satsang in the same beautiful ashram, that the 'happy swami' had been , horror of horrors, not just demoted, but thrown out of the org. Why? Bcos he had been planning to leave AOL and start his own business, sorry, spiritual organisation. There had been some allegations of financial fraud against him too, affecting the AOL bottom line of course, which I heard from other teachers.

Of course, the story I had heard earlier about this was different. In the version I had heard, the 'happy swami' had fallen in love with an east european teacher and has renounced his swami-hood in order to marry her.

We all were very sad at this turn of affairs, how could something so beautiful be sullied? But life moved on.

Later, I heard from another East European teacher that there had been complaints about the 'happy swami' , supposedly he had behaved in an inappropriate manner with a woman training to do ayurvedic massages in the ashram. The woman had complained to senior AOL ppl and even Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, but no action had been taken. When I asked this east-european teacher about the woman that the 'happy swami' had supposedly run away with and whether they were still married, she said that he had in fact, never married her. IN her version, that woman had died of cancer. By this time, I had been in AOL for more than a decade, so the rose-tinted glasses had fallen off and the lies and rumors did not shake me to the same extent.

Still I was disturbed by the fact that Sri Sri did not take reports of inappropriate behaviour seriously, but took action only when it threatened his business interests. Because I still believed that even if senior teachers were corrupt, Sri Sri was an enlightened master.

Now, an year after this, I was talking to a TTC teacher in India. And that teacher mentioned in passing that the 'happy swami' had now been made into a DSN teacher. It seemed that he had come grovelling to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and said 'sorry', and Sri Sri in his 'magnanimous' way, had 'forgiven' him and made him into a DSN teacher.

So again, complaints about fraud/ inappropriate behaviour with women did not matter. The only thing that mattered was Sri Sri's image and profits.

Soon after this, I left AOL. By now, I had come to recognise spin when I saw it. I was no longer the naive, innocent and trusting young soul, and saw clearly how lies and whitewashing told by top officials eventually ended up destroying lives of ppl who were at the bottom of the ladder.

Equipment malfunction in USA flight - some musings about civic sense etc

I flew in to the USA from London this week. There were fumes in the aircraft's back cabin bcos of an equipment malfunction while we were over the Atlantic and the flight turned back and landed in Scotland where we were stuck for a day until the plane was repaired.

When the purser made the announcement that the place had to be tuned back bcos of fumes in the back cabin, many people probably did not understand what was happening. We were given strict instructions to stay in our seat, and if necessary, follow emergency protocols, but many Indian older ppl were walking down the aisle.

This seemed to be because of not being able to understand what was happening bcos of language or health issues. I feel the Indian ppl seated near them should have translated and made sure the elderly ppl were following directions, though I understand it is difficult to know what to do in an emergency.

The air hostesses were extremely frightened and stressed and were repeatedly shouting at them to be seated, but they did not seem to get it. There was quite a bit of fear and confusion. Given what was already happening, this just added to the overall panic.

The flight did land safely, but I felt it is extremely important for us to make sure that our parents have a travelling companion esp when they r very elderly or have issues with understanding the American accent.

Another young man, after landing in Scotland, asked if his drinks would be reimbursed along with his food and hotel.

I wrote this post, not to blame anyone but to illustrate how imp it is to have travelling companions for elderly parents.

This post was deleted from a couple of FB grps, after I started getting angry comments asking me to be grateful that I was safe instead of complaining. Someone also suggested that Indian ppl jump the line bcos they grew up in a scarcity situation.

Sorry, the ppl who jump lines are not always struggling, in India u can see plenty of middle-class ppl following rules, while those who are more privileged do not.

Thanks for reading.

This may come across as a rant, but I am writing it in the hope of sparking some introspection/ conversations, as I feel it is important to discuss such things. Pls take it in that spirit.

The curious case of an extra-marital affair in my Art of Living satsang

Imagine this for a moment.

There are 2 couples in a satsang, they are part of a big friend grp. The woman from couple 1 (lets call her A) has an affair with the man from couple 2 for about 2 years. (let us call him B )

Now, the affair is outed and the whole satsang comes to know about it. That is, everyone knows except B's wife. (Let us call her C)

C's friend want to tell her about B's affair. But here lies Art of Living's special twist.

It turns out that B is planning to go for the TTC (teacher training course), and is quite skilled at getting registrations and funds for Art of Living. So the local state-coordinator, (let us call her X) flips out.

She calls C's friend repeatedly and pressurises her to keep quiet about B's affair and not tell everything to C. Why? Bcos if C got upset and upset B's plans of doing TTC, then that would not be good for Art of Living at all.

So she tells C's friend to keep mum about the affair, as TTC, it seems was a way that B could wash off his bad karma. Bcos in Art of Living, getting registrations for courses, was one sure-shot way to gain good karma and get closer to the Master!

C's friend gets angry and tell X to stop her 'karma crap' and tells C about B's affair anyways. C talks to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who, in his usual insipid way, tells C to 'be patient with B'.

The fact that C and their 2 children are hurt doesn't deter B's TTC plans at all.. B does TTC, and is promoted heavily by Art of Living, and is now a 'senior' Sudarshan Kriya and Sahaj Samadhi meditation teacher.

Telling ppl in courses undoubtedly, that love is not an emotion but it is your very existence.

B and C get divorced.

Now as is normal in such scenarios in Art of Living, C's erstwhile friends don't keep in touch with her any more bcos she is bitter (understandably) and criticises Art of Living and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (oh the -ve vibes)

So the poor women not just lost her marriage, but also lost her friends.

And the icing on the cake is that X's husband was on Art of Living's ethics commitee when this happened and was a national teacher coordinator. So much for ethics and dharma!

A Methodological and Affiliation Review of the Cited Research on Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM)

This review was written by an International Research Analyst. It was first published at : https://exartofliving.wordpress.com/2026/06/04/a-methodological-and-affiliation-review-of-the-cited-research-on-sahaj-samadhi-meditation-ssm/

INTRODUCTION

Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) also marketed in academic papers under the clinical pseudonym “Automatic Self-Transcending Meditation” (ASTM) is promoted by the Art of Living and its research wing, the Sri Sri Institute for Advanced Research (SSIAR), as a clinically proven intervention for depression, stress, and sleep management.

To evaluate these claims, this post conducts a purely scientific, evidence-based medicine (EBM) audit of the unique publications cited in their portfolio. We evaluate these studies based on investigator independence, compliance with international clinical trial registration standards, and methodological control quality.

Methodological & Affiliation Review: Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM / ASTM)

Ref # & Study Program Disclosed Affiliations & Independence Primary Reported Finding Methodological Limitations & Caveats
1 (Kanchibhotla, Kulkarni & Singh, 2019) “Effect of Automatic Self Transcending Meditation on mental health…” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Zero Independence. Authors are direct staff members and directors of SSIAR (the in-house research wing of the Art of Living). SSM significantly decreases perceived stress and improves subjective sleep quality over 60 days. No Control Group: Open-label, pre-post design with no comparator arm. Relies entirely on subjective self-report questionnaires (PSQI and PSS), which are highly prone to placebo and expectancy biases. Published in a low-impact-factor journal (IJSRR).
2 (Vasudev et al., 2016) “A Training Programme Involving Automatic Self-Transcending Meditation in Late-Life Depression…” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Dependent. Co-authored by Ronnie Newman, Director of Research for the Art of Living Foundation NA, who supervised the training staff. A 12-week ASTM program leads to significantly greater reductions in depression and anxiety severity in older adults compared to treatment as usual (TAU). RETRACTED (2021): Officially retracted by the editors of BJPsych Open. The registered trial protocol (NCT02149810) listed “change in heart rate variability (HRV)” as the primary outcome, which was completely omitted from the paper. Instead, the authors selectively reported only the secondary subjective outcome of depression severity using an un-pre-registered preliminary analysis.
3 (Ionson et al., 2019) “Effects of Sahaj Samadhi meditation on heart rate variability and depressive symptoms…” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Dependent. Co-authored by Ronnie Newman (AOL Foundation NA) and ASTM instructors. Practicing Sahaj Samadhi Meditation improves HRV and depressive symptoms in patients with late-life depression. RETRACTED (2021): Officially retracted by the editors of The British Journal of Psychiatry due to identical critical reporting failures as the Vasudev (2016) paper. The authors selectively withheld the registered primary biological outcome (HRV data) when it failed to show statistically significant results, publishing only secondary subjective survey data.
4 (Amtul et al., 2014) “A Randomized Controlled Longitudinal Naturalistic Trial Testing the Effects of ASTM…” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Dependent. Co-authored by Ronnie Newman (AOL Foundation NA). Outlines the proposed design and methodology for a trial comparing ASTM + TAU against TAU alone. Protocol Only: This paper contains no clinical results, data, or completed outcomes. It is a study protocol blueprint, though it is frequently miscited in promotional materials as completed empirical evidence of clinical results.
5 (Amtul et al., 2020) “A Randomized Controlled Longitudinal Naturalistic Trial Testing the Effects of ASTM… Naturalistic Trial” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Dependent. Co-authored by Ronnie Newman (AOL Foundation NA). Outlines a study protocol for a randomized trial of ASTM in late-life depression. Protocol Only: This publication contains no active datasets, clinical results, or empirical conclusions. It is purely a duplicate methodological blueprint.
6 (Hirjee et al., 2015) “Automatic Self-Transcending Meditation improves Neuropsychological Symptoms in Late-Life Depression” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Dependent. Co-authored by Ronnie Newman (AOL Foundation NA). Preliminary data claiming ASTM improves cognitive and neuropsychological symptoms in older adults with depression. Conference Abstract Only: Published only as a brief, non-peer-reviewed poster abstract in the Canadian Geriatrics Journal conference proceedings, not as a full, peer-reviewed clinical research paper.
7 (Hirjee et al., 2018) “Neuropsychological symptoms improve after ASTM” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Dependent. Co-authored by Ronnie Newman (AOL Foundation NA). Claims older depressed adults show cognitive improvements following ASTM. Conference Abstract / Duplicate: This is a duplicate listing representing a slightly different conference abstract presentation of the same ongoing un-pre-registered pilot trial cohort.
8 (Kanchibhotla & Harsora, 2021) “Impact of Sahaj Samadhi Dhyan Yoga on Vagal Tone and Heart Rate Variability…” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Zero Independence. Conducted internally by SSIAR directors. Long-term practitioners of Sahaj Samadhi Meditation exhibit elevated vagal tone and superior heart rate variability. Self-Selection Bias: Cross-sectional comparative design comparing pre-existing practitioners with non-practitioners. Cannot establish causality, as naturally relaxed and health-conscious individuals are more likely to maintain long-term meditation habits.
9 (Kanchibhotla, Parekh & Kulkarni, 2021) “The Influence of Sahaj Samadhi Meditation on Sleep Quality in Indian Adults…” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Zero Independence. Designed and executed entirely by the in-house SSIAR team. SSM significantly improves sleep quality and sleep efficiency in Indian adults. Open-Trial Pilot Study: Pre-post open-label design with no active or passive control group. Sleep improvements could be a placebo effect, a regression to the mean, or due to baseline expectancy.
10 (Kanchibhotla et al., 2020) “Sahaj Samadhi Meditation reduces burnout in corporate workers” Sahaj Samadhi Meditation (SSM) Zero Independence. Designed and analyzed internally by the SSIAR team. Claims corporate workers show significant reductions in emotional exhaustion and burnout after SSM training. Uncontrolled Online Survey: Relies entirely on subjective self-report questionnaires distributed to self-selected corporate volunteers. Confounders (such as organizational changes, vacation time, or standard maturation) are completely uncontrolled.

CONCLUSION & SCIENTIFIC CRITIQUE

A critical audit of the cited research on Sahaj Samadhi Meditation reveals severe breaches of standard clinical research guidelines:

  1. Selective Reporting and Retraction: The double retractions of the Vasudev et al. (2016) and Ionson et al. (2019) trials in 2021 represent a major methodological failure. In both cases, the researchers registered the clinical trials to test an objective, biological endpoint: Heart Rate Variability (HRV). When the HRV data failed to yield statistically significant improvements, the researchers completely omitted the data from publication and instead selectively published only secondary subjective depression questionnaires. This violates basic scientific registration and publication integrity.
  2. Protocol and Abstract Inflation: Out of the 10 distinct citations, 4 represent study protocols with no clinical data, or brief, non-peer-reviewed conference abstracts. Listing these under “published research” artificially inflates the empirical evidence base.
  3. Absence of Active Controls: None of the non-retracted studies compare SSM to an active control (like standard physical relaxation or a basic, non-proprietary concentration technique). Without an active comparative control, observed shifts in stress and sleep are indistinguishable from standard relaxation or placebo effects.

A Methodological and Affiliation Review of the 46 Cited Studies on Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY)

- This review has been written by an international research analyst. It was first published at https://exartofliving.wordpress.com/2026/05/28/a-methodological-and-affiliation-review-of-the-46-cited-studies-on-sudarshan-kriya-yoga-sky/comment-page-1/#comment-13

A central claim in the promotion of Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) is that the practice is backed by “100+ independent, peer-reviewed studies.”

To evaluate this claim from an evidence-based medicine perspective, I conducted a systematic review of the 46 core studies cited in the Art of Living’s (AOL) official research summary (available on their website under /research-sudarshan-kriya). The goal was to objectively assess two critical scientific criteria: investigator independence and methodological rigour.

Below is a detailed breakdown of what the cited literature actually shows, along with the standard scientific caveats associated with each paper.

The Core Audit: Disclosed Affiliations & Methodological Caveats

Ref # & Study Disclosed Affiliations & Independence Primary Reported Finding Methodological Limitations & Caveats
1 & 27 (Katzman et al., 2012) Affiliated. Co-authors Richard Brown and Patricia Gerbarg are prominent developers/teachers of breathing workshops closely aligned with AOL. SKY is an effective adjunctive treatment for GAD. High Attrition: 24% participant drop-out rate. No Sham Control: Lacked a blind control group, introducing potential expectancy bias.
2 (Vedamurthachar et al., 2006) Affiliated. Lead author is an AOL instructor. Conducted at NIMHANS, India, which has direct research partnerships with AOL. Reduces depression and cortisol in alcohol-dependent individuals. Short Duration: Evaluated over just 2 weeks. No Long-Term Follow-up: Lacks data on long-term relapse rates or active relaxation controls.
3 (Seppälä et al., 2014) Affiliated. Lead author Emma Seppälä is a long-time AOL practitioner and international teacher. Decreases PTSD symptoms in military veterans, with benefits lasting one year. Low Statistical Power: Very small sample size (N=21 total). Waitlist Control: Lacked an active or sham comparator group.
4 (Kjellgren et al., 2007) Affiliated. Co-author Fahri Saatcioglu is a prominent, long-time senior AOL international instructor. Improves wellness and optimism while reducing anxiety in healthy adults. Response Bias: Relied on subjective, self-reported questionnaires. Used a waitlist control instead of an active control.
5 (Sureka et al., 2014) Institutional Tie. Conducted in Tihar Jail, Delhi, in conjunction with AOL’s prison outreach program (Prison Smart). Reduces anxiety and depression in male prison inmates. Social Desirability Bias: Inmates in institutional settings may over-report positive outcomes. Unblinded design.
6 (Agte & Chiplonkar, 2008) Affiliated. Lead author has active research ties to traditional yogic packages based on AOL techniques. Increases antioxidant levels and reduces anxiety. Weak Control: Compared daily practice to weekly practice rather than comparing to a non-breathing relaxation control.
7 (Narnolia et al., 2014) Non-Independent Focus. Indian medical researchers specifically testing the trademarked AOL package. Improves cardiovascular parameters and anxiety in hypertensive patients. Low-Impact Venue: Published in a low-impact-factor journal. Lacks an active control to isolate SKY from basic physical relaxation.
8 (Doria et al., 2015) Affiliated. Conducted in Italy; co-authors are certified instructors for the Art of Living Foundation. Serves as a multi-component therapy for GAD. Attrition Rate: Significant loss of participants during the trial. Utilized waitlist/standard care rather than active comparison controls.
9 (Toschi-Dias et al., 2017) Affiliated. Conducted in Milan, Italy, utilizing local AOL instructors to facilitate the training. Improves heart rate variability and heart control in depression/anxiety. Short Trial Period: The active intervention lasted only 15 days. Small sample size (N=46); lacks a sham-breathing control.
10 (Sharma et al., 2017) Affiliated. Lead author is an active AOL practitioner and researcher. Assists patients with Major Depressive Disorder who did not respond to antidepressants. Pilot Scale: Only 25 patients participated. Used a waitlist control instead of an active or sham breathing control.
11 (Janakiramaiah et al., 2000) Affiliated. NIMHANS team maintains tight institutional collaborations with AOL’s research initiatives. Shows similar antidepressant efficacy to ECT and Imipramine. Underpowered: Small sample sizes (N=15 per treatment arm). Lacked robust evaluator blinding.
12 & 38 (Janakiramaiah et al., 1998) Affiliated. NIMHANS in-house study. Serves as an effective treatment for dysthymic (chronic mild depression) disorder. No Control Group: Pre- vs. post-test design only. Small sample (N=24) published in a local institutional journal.
13 (Naga Venkatesha Murthy et al., 1997) Affiliated. NIMHANS in-house study. Normalizes P300 brainwave amplitudes in depressed patients. Observational Limit: Tiny sample (N=15) with no control group. P300 is a highly variable surrogate marker, not a clinical outcome.
14 (Murthy et al., 1998) Affiliated. NIMHANS study. Correlates P300 brainwave changes with antidepressant response. Surrogate Endpoints: Focuses on neurophysiological variables rather than validated, reproducible clinical symptoms of recovery.
15 (Descilo et al., 2010) Affiliated. Lead author Teresa Descilo is a long-time project manager for the IAHV, AOL’s sister organization. Reduces PTSD in survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Investigator Bias: Delivered in a chaotic disaster zone by IAHV/AOL relief teams, introducing significant performance bias.
16 & 19 (Martin et al., 2013 / Carter et al., 2013) Affiliated. Co-authors include Richard Brown, Patricia Gerbarg, and Leena Anand (a senior AOL representative). Reduces PTSD symptoms in Vietnam veterans. Small Cohort: Only 31 veterans participated. Published in a low-impact journal. Used waitlist controls instead of active controls.
17 & 23 (Kharya et al., 2014) Affiliated. Authors are trained SKY instructors associated with local AOL research initiatives. Improves psychological health and autonomic cardiac tone. Lack of Specificity: Autonomic tone changes naturally during any slow-breathing exercises; does not isolate the unique effects of SKY.
18 (Goldstein et al., 2016) Affiliated. Authors evaluated AOL’s “Yesplus” university program; several co-authors are student instructors for the program. University-level “Yesplus” workshop improves wellness. Selection Bias: Non-randomized, open-label design. Participants self-selected into a paid workshop, introducing high expectancy bias.
20 (Walker & Pacik, 2017) Affiliated. Evaluated “Project Welcome Home Troops” (an AOL/IAHV program). Authors partnered directly with IAHV. Rhythmic breathing helps military veterans with PTSD. Anecdotal Evidence: A case series of only four individuals (N=4). No control group; holds no statistical power.
21 (Subramanian et al., 2012) Affiliated. Co-authored by Dr. Vinod Kochupillai, a senior global leader and teacher in the Art of Living. Protects lipid profiles and blood cells from exam-induced stress. Regression to the Mean: Exam stress naturally resolves, meaning biochemical markers would normalize post-exams regardless of intervention.
22 (Chandra et al., 2017) Affiliated. Co-author Vineet Gupta is directly affiliated with the AOL research wing. Evaluates the neurophysiology and stress regulation of SKY. Not an Active Trial: Primarily a descriptive literature review and theoretical paper, not an empirical clinical trial.
24 (Ghahremani et al., 2013) Affiliated. Evaluates the “YES!” program (wholly owned by AOL). Authors cooperated directly with AOL educators. YES! workshop reduces impulsive behavior in teenagers. Confounding Variables: Evaluates a multi-component program (social interaction, group talks); cannot isolate the effect of the breathing.
25 (Kochupillai et al., 2005) Affiliated. Lead author Vinod Kochupillai was a prominent global leader and teacher in the Art of Living. Boosts immune system cells (Natural Killer cells) and aids in tobacco cessation. Methodological Weakness: Non-randomized, open-label design. Immune cell counts fluctuate based on uncontrolled lifestyle factors.
26 (Gootjes et al., 2011) Independent. Conducted in the Netherlands by Erasmus University Rotterdam researchers with no reported AOL ties. Meditative practitioners show superior emotional regulation. No Causal Proof: Cross-sectional design comparing existing yogis to non-yogis. Cannot prove yoga caused the difference (self-selection bias).
28 (Newman, Yim & Shaenfeld) Affiliated. Lead author Ronnie Newman is the Director of Research and Health Promotion for the Art of Living Foundation USA. Social-Emotional Learning program benefits youth across all demographics. Unpublished Data: Was listed as “under review”—meaning it had not passed peer review at the time of citation.
29 (Jyotsna et al., 2012) Affiliated. AIIMS New Delhi study, closely collaborating with local AOL chapters. Improves blood sugar control and life quality in diabetic patients. Statistically Insignificant: The trial found no significant difference in blood sugar control (HbA1c did not improve). Only subjective QOL improved.
30 (Warner & Hall, 2012) Affiliated. Evaluates the AOL program; authors are closely linked to AOL’s health programs. Improves mental and spiritual wellness in breast cancer patients. No Peer-Review: A book chapter rather than a journal article. Book chapters do not undergo standard blind peer review.
31 (Bhatia et al., 2003) Affiliated. Co-author Vinod Kochupillai is a senior AOL figure. Long-term SKY practitioners have distinct brainwave patterns showing deep relaxation. Small Cohort: Compares 19 existing practitioners with 15 controls. Does not track changes before and after learning; cannot prove causality.
32 (Sulekha et al., 2006) Affiliated. NIMHANS study. NIMHANS integrative medicine department maintains active collaborative ties with AOL. Vipassana and SKY practitioners have improved deep sleep cycles. Extremely Underpowered: Only 10 participants per group (N=30 total). Sleep studies are highly sensitive to sleep-lab environment disruptions.
33 (Kumar et al., 2013) Affiliated. AIIMS research team closely allied with AOL integrative health research groups. Reduces pain and stress in advanced-stage breast cancer patients. Unblinded Trial: Compared standard care vs. standard care + SKY. High drop-out rates because patients were terminally ill.
34 (Mulla & Vedamuthachar, 2014) Affiliated. Vedamurthachar is an active AOL instructor. Stress management workshops improve wellness in corporate workers. Non-Medical Journal: Published in a business management journal rather than a medical/psychology journal. Small group, subjective surveys.
35 (Sharma et al., 2003) Affiliated. Co-author Vinod Kochupillai is a senior AOL representative. SKY practitioners have better antioxidant levels and lower blood lactate. Dynamic Markers: Antioxidants and blood lactate fluctuate constantly based on daily diet, sleep, and physical movement.
36 (Agte & Tarwadi, 2004) Affiliated. Authors are tied to AOL research groups. Serves as a highly promising therapy for Type 2 Diabetes. Tiny Sample Size: A preliminary pilot study of only 20 people (N=20). No active comparator group used.
37 (Agte et al., 2011) Affiliated. Continuation of Agte’s previous research, which has direct ties to AOL research wings. Improves chemical and physical markers in mild hypertensive patients. Small Sample: Only 35 patients. Mild hypertension fluctuates naturally; without a robust active control, improvements cannot be isolated.
39 (Sharma et al., 2008) Affiliated. Co-author Vinod Kochupillai is a senior AOL figure. SKY practice is linked to gene profiles that promote cell longevity. Cross-Sectional Limit: Compares existing practitioners with non-practitioners. Does not track changes before/after learning, leaving baseline lifestyle differences uncontrolled.
40 (Qu et al., 2013) Not Independent. Co-author Fahri Saatcioglu is a highly active, long-time international senior teacher and researcher for the Art of Living. Yoga and breathing induce rapid gene changes in blood cells within two hours. Extremely Small Group: Only 10 subjects per group. Short-term genetic shifts are common during any physical exercise (like a brisk walk) and are not unique to SKY.
41 (Ayyildiz & Arga, 2017) Independent. Conducted by bioinformatics researchers at Marmara University, Turkey, with no reported ties to AOL. Outlines molecular signatures of yoga practice in blood cells. No Actual Testing: This is a theoretical opinion/hypothesis paper, not a clinical research paper. It conducted zero clinical testing on actual subjects.
42 & 45 (Somwanshi et al., 2013) Dependent on AOL. The academic authors are independent of AOL, but the trial relied on certified Art of Living instructors to deliver the trademarked SKY course. Improves cardiorespiratory health in healthy adults. No Control Group: Pre- vs. post-test design with no control group. Published in a low-impact, non-indexed multidisciplinary journal.
43 (Kale et al., 2016) Dependent on AOL. Conducted by independent medical researchers, but the study utilized AOL-certified instructors to deliver the course. Improves cardiovascular and respiratory function. Expected Results: Small sample (N=50), unblinded, and lacked a control group. Standard breathing responses can be achieved via any free breathing program.
44 (Bodi et al., 2008) Not Independent. The study co-authors include Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (the founder of AOL) and Dr. Vedamurthachar (from AOL’s Department of Research). SKY improves pulmonary function (lung capacity). Meeting Abstract: This is a poster presentation abstract, not a full-scale, peer-reviewed, published journal paper. Lacks dataset transparency.
46 (Chavhan, 2013) Dependent on AOL. Conducted by physical education researchers, but relied directly on local AOL coordinators to provide training, teachers, and project guidance. Improves physical endurance in sports players. Small Sample: Only 30 athletes tested. Published in a low-tier multidisciplinary journal. Standard training effects are not separated from the SKY program.

Key Methodological Observations

When analyzing these 46 papers as a collective body of work, several standard scientific caveats emerge:

  1. Investigator and Institutional Affiliation: A significant portion of the literature is authored by individuals with disclosed personal, professional, or institutional ties to the Art of Living or its sister organization, the IAHV. While this does not automatically invalidate the data, it is a significant variable regarding investigator independence.
  2. Sample Size and Statistical Power: Most of the trials are conducted on a pilot scale (N < 50). While small sample sizes are standard for early-phase exploratory studies, they are generally considered insufficient for making definitive, population-wide clinical claims.
  3. Reliance on Waitlist Controls: The majority of randomized trials compared SKY to a “waitlist control” rather than an active comparison group (such as non-rhythmic slow breathing or a different relaxation technique). In clinical research, waitlist controls are known to yield larger apparent treatment effects because they do not control for the expectation of benefit.
  4. Alternative Physiological Explanations: The physical sensations reported during the practice (e.g., tingling, lightheadedness, thermal changes) are often described in marketing materials as energetic or spiritual phenomena. From a medical perspective, these are standard physiological symptoms of transient respiratory alkalosis (reduced blood carbon dioxide levels caused by rapid, sustained breathing), which temporarily alters systemic blood gas levels and cerebral blood flow.

The Conclusion

Breathwork is a valuable, evidence-supported modality for stress reduction, Autonomic Nervous System regulation, and general wellness. Sudarshan Kriya is a structured program that can produce genuine physiological relaxation.

However, the assertion that SKY is a fully validated clinical intervention backed by 100+ completely independent, high-level clinical breakthroughs does not align with standard evidence-based medicine criteria. Most of the literature consists of early-stage pilot trials, many of which carry a high risk of institutional or investigator bias.

I would welcome your perspective, particularly if you have studied these specific datasets or have experience practicing these techniques.

Tina Parekh and Vikram Hazra - How blind faith in Sri Sri Ravi Shankar hurts people

I want to start with saying that Tina Parekh and Vikram Hazra sound like really wonderful and kind people. This post is not about trying to hurt them or cast aspersions on their marriage. Rather it is an effort to look at whether following Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's advice/ directives always works out for the best in people's lives.

Tine Parakh's interview with Siddharth Kannan : Listen from 1:05:00. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wiex6aHnuac

Tina starts off by describing how she and Vikram got married. They were friends and Vikram was looking for a match for her. When she was visiting the Bangalore ashram for Navaratri, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar asked Vikram Hazra to get married. Now when Sri Sri said that to Vikram, and asked him if he had any girls in mind, Vikram said that he was talking to a friend, but hadn't thought of her 'that way'. So Sri Sri asked Vikram to call her on stage.

Vikram called Tina on stage, and Sri Sri looked at her and said 'You both get married in 6 months'. Remember, all this while, Tina had never thought of marrying Vikram, and did not even know what Sri Sri was talking about. But her opinion was never asked for, in her own marriage. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar removed his garlands and put them on both Tina and Vikram.

Tina describes being shell shocked and lost for words. When she asked Vikram what just happened, he basically said that now that Guruji said they had to get married they must do it. And sure enough the rumour spread in 6 hrs to her parents that she was engaged.

Tina mentions in the interview that Vikram is a wonderful person, so their story could have been a lovely success but for one thing.

Tina Parakh says that she married to be a mother.. She even says in the interview that she doesn't feel the need to be married if there were no children. She never had a conversation with Vikram Hazra before marriage about whether they would have children. After marriage when she mentioned it, Vikram Hazra said 'Why , there is so much to do in this world, there are so many children in this world , there is so much seva to do, why do you want a child ?'

To his credit, he listened when she insisted. However, she could not conceive because she was ill and when they thought of adoption, Vikram's age was such that they could not adopt an infant. They would have needed to adopt a 8-9 yr old child which they were not ready to do. She went through 5 years of major depression because of not being able to have a child of her own or adopt one.

So if we look at this rationally, was Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's intuition truly for the best in Tina's case? Maybe if she had married someone else, closer to her age, even if she could not conceive, they could have at least adopted a child.

But will this even be a topic for discussion in Art of Living? Or did Tina/ Vikram and Art of Living devotees just accept what happened as the best outcome bcos Sri Sri said it?

Is blind faith really the best way? Does it always give the best outcomes?

The point of this post is not to insist that she should have had a child. The point of this post is to ask why the outcomes of Sri Sri's directives or intuition are never examined in a rational manner.
