I’m so done with people who think the only purpose a street should serve is moving as many cars as possible.

Diane Bell was killed on Franklin Street last winter. She was an upstanding community member to everyone lucky enough to know her. She was running as part of a local run group. She crossed the street earlier than the others, heading west, and then decided to GO BACK to Franklin to make sure other members of her group were able to safely get across. THAT’S when she was killed by a driver trying to beat a red light.

You can try to do absolutely everything right to the best of your ability as a pedestrian, and still get killed. And then you get blamed for it by simpletons who just want to keep the status quo. Complaining about the cost of the construction and giving no regard to the cost of the human lives who don’t make it to the other side.

Redesign Franklin Street for the people who live here in Portland, not the ones who drive through. You can take your traffic concerns and shove em. The era of car dominance is ending and it can’t come soon enough.

Whole block roped off for work at one corner, along a 3-lane road. Why are they so allergic to putting up a detour-sidewalk in situations like this? Instead I gotta wait 5 minutes at a 5-way intersection so all the cars can get through, cross and cross back again.

Portland deserves walkable streets and places that are meant to inspire and be lingered in, not just driven through on the way to someplace else. If the City is going to be serious about Vision Zero, it needs to stop half-assing and commit to serious change.

Just a small dent in a huge problem, but it’s a start. 👍🏼

Could only nab a 2 second recording while I was stopped but lots of smoke billowing out of the sidewalk, and whatever happened was strong enough to displace several bricks from the ground.
