The drug most of you are taking is 3,500 years old. The Egyptians figured it out before writing was widespread. Nobody knew why it worked until 1970.

I’m a pharmacist. I’ve dispensed colchicine hundreds of times. A few months ago I started actually researching the history of the drugs I dispense and colchicine stopped me cold.
The Ebers Papyrus, an Egyptian medical text from around 1550 BC, documents autumn crocus as a treatment for swollen joints. That manuscript was already copying older documents when it was written. We don’t know how much older.
Egyptian physicians knew three things about it: too little did nothing, the right amount reduced the swelling, and too much killed the patient. They figured out the correct dose the only way available to them. Some patients did not survive the figuring out.
Here is the part that got me. Nobody knew how colchicine actually worked until the 1970s. Not the Egyptians, not the Greeks, not the medieval Arab physicians who wrote detailed preparation guides for it, not the French chemists who isolated the molecule in 1820. Physicians prescribed it correctly for three thousand years based entirely on observation. No mechanism. No theory. Just the repeated confirmation that it worked and the repeated warning not to use too much.
The mechanism, when it was finally described, turned out to be strange. Colchicine doesn’t fight inflammation the way most drugs do. It binds to a structural protein inside your cells called tubulin and prevents it from forming the fibers cells use to move around. In gout specifically, it stops the white blood cells that rush to uric acid crystals in your joints from getting there. No migration, no inflammatory cascade, no pain.
That’s the same mechanism that makes it toxic in overdose, by the way. It’s not selective. At the right dose it disrupts neutrophil migration. At too high a dose it disrupts cell division everywhere, and the GI tract goes first. There is no antidote. The Egyptians understood the margin mattered 3,500 years before anyone could explain why.
The plant it comes from, Colchicum autumnale, is named after Colchis. The ancient Black Sea kingdom. The homeland of Medea. Greek mythology specifically assigned the plant’s poison properties to her, which means the Greeks understood its toxicity well enough to write it into their stories.
It flowers every autumn without any leaves, which is why botanists eventually named it naked ladies. The flowers appear alone from bare ground, months after the leaves have died back. For centuries people thought it was two different plants.
Anyway. I found it remarkable that something this old still works, that the mechanism took this long to understand, and that the correct dose was calibrated through observation across dozens of civilizations who couldn’t communicate with each other and all arrived at roughly the same answer.
If you’re on colchicine and have questions about how it works or how it interacts with other things you’re taking, happy to answer in the comments.

BANK OF WALGREENS

Are we a bank now too? We literally take in ‘thousands’ of dollars now with reloads, bill payments, rent payments, etc. It’s only a matter of time before the real criminals find this out. We’ve already been robbed several times. Now before y’all start your bitchin, about making drops: WE DO! However; there only two people at night and half the time the SFL is stuck in pharmacy, so it’s VERY easy at my store to amass $3000 EASY in 30 minutes at 9:30 pm or even right before closing when the meth heads need to reload their Chime and Cash App. The first and last week of the month is the worst. Clearly it’s going to take several employees or customers getting hurt during a robbery before corporate deals with this. And I’m convinced lotto tix and pics are next.

Does the company even care if people quit?

It seems like they are uninterested in keeping employees. They expect loyalty but it's not something they earn. Since things have just been getting worse since Sycamore bought Walgreens with stores being open again this Thanksgiving, pharmacies open on major holidays now, smaller raises given, hours being cut more and other bullshit corporate moves. But does the company even care if people quit? It doesn't seem like they do unless it's a mass resignation since they know you are easily replaceable. They have the attitude that if you don't like how we are running things, then you can quit and go work somewhere else then.

Deposit drawer

My coworkers use the deposit drawer as a lost and found and apparently I customer lost a blunt and a lighter in the store today. The whole drawer stank but it gave me a good laugh. Hope that customer gets their weed back. Most interesting thing a customer has lost in your store?

WPRE/Premium

Don’t know how others experience with these are, but in my opinion it’s a waste of money. Sycamore is interested in cutting costs, but keeping WPRE around is a complete waste. Seldom show, we do the resets (they say they don’t do resets just revisions, except foster grant) come in take a pickoff the work we did, and get paid for nothing. Yeah, we can’t report it in the portal, and nada. They’ve even came in and said they completed work and had my name listed as signed off on the work. Meanwhile, I was on vacation and nowhere near the store. Unless they are locked into a long term contract (see credit cards), they could take what they are paying them and use the money to actually pay the people doing the work. Must be nice to get paid to be a photographer.

do your managers approve days off?

We have a new store manager and she doesn't seem to check request for days off. Our previous manager would always approve days off no questions asked. But i requested a couple days off a month in advance and she still scheduled me. The schedule was made probably 2 weeks in advance so i figured she still had time to change it, but she just told me to find someone to cover me. I've also gotten complaints from other employees about getting scheduled on days they requested off months in advance.

Hours short during summer eh?

Manager told me there MIGHT be a couple of weeks through the summer where I might get 3 days only but “everyone was going to lose some hours”. Tell me why for the next three weeks the only ones whose hours got a cut where mine by ten hours and the new SFL by only 7?

My pay checks are getting cut by at least 300$ because of that nonsense. Honestly feel like a form of retaliation at this point given the issues have been having with my manager specifically making a habit of telling me to do certain tasks but then getting crazy when tasks he didn’t assign or list for me weren’t done since I dunno, he didn’t say to do them? On top of the whole ‘untouched’ bullshit he was doing in my previous post.

I’m finally free???

I just need to share the good news with people. I finally got a job offer from another company.
I’ve been with Walgreens for almost three years and it has sucked my soul dry. The amount of times I’ve gone home and absolutely sobbed over my job is insane.
No more night terrors about customers and coworkers and vendors. No more panic attacks about facing certain people or the impending anxiety of being fired for no reason.
I’m giving my notice tomorrow!! Aaa!!!

I’m not sure what to do

So I’m a shift lead and I’m feeling targeted by my store manager.

I don’t know if I should contact hr because I have seen multiple times through out the 5 years iv worked here that when some one contacts hr the store manager is told about it then I feel like the store manager retaliates every time.

There are ppl’s we do (online videos and rules we have to go through) that state if that happens call hr but if I did they would just know again it doesn’t make any sense it’s like one big game to them

Now on to what he’s been doing to me

I was upgraded to a shift lead 4 years into me working here because we were short he seemed fine untill a month later. Now i know as a shift lead your going to have to hear the “why didn’t this get done” especially on my night shifts but he started only doing it to me and making small remarks like “well it should of been done” or “you need to make time for these things” when he schedules me with one cashier from 4pm-12am and he always schedules me with people who are brand new and I have no time to train because our photo lab is one of the busiest parts of the store I’d say even more then pharmacy. Then gives me a list of things that I have to do so now I’m training/ doing photo/ trying to get store stuff done/ answering customers questions/ and closing registers and store it’s too much.

Then I come in the next morning because guess what I work 10am-6pm the VERY next day and iv dealt with this the whole year he’s been at my store. Anyways I come in the next morning for my shift after closing and what do I hear the first 3 mins i walk in and clock in is “this and this and this didn’t get done” “what happened last night”

Ok so I tell him and I move on with my shift and start the stuff he wants done all day long working 10-6 he will be coming up and “checking up on me” and then tell me this has to be done today like for instance today we had to do the cooler reset I had to pull everything out of the drink coolers and rearrange them WHILE watching photo getting curbside’s and code 60 pick ups and money reloads and getting vendors.

Your probably asking your self “did she get this done” NOOO

guess who came around the corner at 6 and was upset with me because I didn’t get it done he said “this really needs done today” he starts doing it and I get up and clock out and leave because I’m sick of it I was scheduled off at 6 I’m not staying later to finish it after he didn’t help me all day

Ok so I have a messed up schedule as Iv mentioned above but I get every other weekend off which is nice but I put in vacation perfectly so that I’d have my weekend and 7 days pto time

He told me I had to give up my Saturday which I told him I had plans with family since I have to work till midnight all memorial weekend he shrugged his shoulders at me and said I had to work it 1pm-9pm ok now I’m mad.

Then iv noticed he always has an issue if I have to leave early or need a day off as an emergency for example I had to get my breaks fixed and my store manager make the schedule 4 weeks out so it’s kinda hard to work around that I told him I needed said day off he said I need to ask around I did and found some one to cover. the day before the breaks needed fixed the employee who was taking my day bailed so he expected me to be there so I found someone else and he rejected it so there for I had to find rides to work for a day I told him about WEEKS in advance.

Now tell me why the makeup lady today put a note on his desk for 4 days off the next two weeks for birthday parties and he said ok no problem we got you covered no arguments no having to debate with him no having to find her own coverage but I couldn’t for my cars breaks? Yeah bs

There has been so many more occasions but i don’t know what do you guys think i should do?

IS position

I just got an offer at another store to be either their IS or ISL, the manager said they’d let me know by friday which position it is because they need a “key holder”. I’ve only been at walgreens since Dec. 2024 and have experience with resets, scan outs and price changes but that’s it. any and all info about the day-to-day tasks of these positions are welcome please! Thank youuu

photo hell

these vinyl banners are the worst thing the be added to photo, weve done at least 10 today among other posters and creative orders... i mean we clear the screen and 10 more orders come in. how are we supposed to keep up with these new OSA regulations meanwhile we have no photo specialists?? this is ridiculous

Do I need this paper, or is it a waste of space?

I’m in charge of everything photo in my store and i’m slowly organizing the paper from what we use often to niche orders so that I know what to top off and what to leave alone. I’ve come across a bunch of paper with the WIC of 170074 or 302855 which must be the newer WIC and when I look it up on store expense, it’s saying it’s only needed where there is no DS80 duplex printer, but we have a DS820DX that prints calendars and photo book pages already.

This might be a stupid question, I get it. I just want to be precise as to not chuck it if we actually need it, even if it’s rarely.
