I saved a bag of dog food and nobody knows
I was carrying groceries into my apartment when the bag of dog food slipped out of my arms. It was heading straight for a puddle, so I stuck my foot out and somehow stopped it right before it hit. I just stood there holding the bag against my leg. I looked around. Nobody saw it. The dog wasn't even with me. I carried it upstairs like nothing happened. That dog will never know what I did for him
I picked the right checkout line
For once, I picked a line at the grocery store and it was actually the fastest one. I may have peaked
I spent five years waiting for my promotion
Yesterday, I trained my replacement
I have a specific cup that I apparently don't own
There’s a coffee mug in my kitchen that I never use. It’s not ugly. I don’t dislike it. I have no reason not to use it. But whenever I make coffee, I look at it and think, “Not that one.” I’ve been doing this for years. I don't even remember when I decided this. If someone asked me why I don't use that mug, I genuinely wouldn't have an answer. It just feels like somebody else's cup. It is, in fact, my cup
I finally threw away the cables I don't know what they belong to
After years of keeping them "just in case", I finally admitted they are probably for a device I haven't owned since 2012
I realized I don't actually know which key unlocks my apartment
I have a small keyring with a few keys that all look pretty similar. I've lived in the same apartment for a few years, and I don't think I've ever used the wrong key. I just reach into my pocket, grab the keys, and unlock the door without thinking about it. A few days ago I stopped before unlocking the door and had a weird thought: if someone took these keys off the keyring and laid them on a table, I'm honestly not sure I could immediately tell you which one is my apartment key. Apparently my hand knows exactly which one it is, but my brain doesn't. Ever since I noticed that, I've had to actually look at the key for a second before unlocking my door. I think I accidentally interrupted whatever autopilot I had built over the years. I'm hoping I forget about it soon because it was a much better system before I started paying attention.
A shopping cart became my responsibility for no reason
I was loading groceries into my trunk when a shopping cart slowly rolled over and stopped right next to my car. I wasn't the one who left it there. Nobody was around. But the second it stopped next to me, it somehow felt like I was responsible for it. So I walked it back to the cart return. If it had stopped ten feet away instead, I probably would've just driven home
I accidentally created a fake tradition with my mail carrier
A few months ago I was bringing groceries inside when my mail carrier walked up with a package. I had a cold soda in one of the bags, so I handed it to him without really thinking. He smiled, thanked me, and that was that. The next week he dropped off another package and joked, "No soda today?" We both laughed. Now, somehow, every time I know I'm getting a package, I catch myself wondering if I have something cold in the fridge. I'm pretty sure he was kidding that one time. I'm also pretty sure I'm the one who turned it into a thing.
Do you think life is mostly random, or do things happen for a reason?
Sometimes I look back at my life and realize how many tiny random things had to happen for me to be where I am now. A random conversation, a person I almost didn’t meet, a decision I almost didn’t make. It makes me wonder: is life just a chain of coincidences, or do we create patterns and meaning after things happen?
My fridge light turned off and I felt like I failed a test
I opened the fridge just to think for a second. I wasn’t looking for food, I just kind of stood there with the door open like it was helping me figure something out. After a while the light turned off by itself, and for some reason that felt like a small disappointment. Like I had stayed in there too long and wasted its time.I closed the door and went back to my room, still not sure what I was even doing.
