Diagnostic life tip

No matter what the customer says, the extra fluids they keep in the vehicle will point you toward the problem.

Customer states: It's not using any coolant, the clouds of white smoke and empty coolant would disagree with their statement.

Modern problems require retro solutions.

Trinitron isn't as stunning as I remember. Gotta look into tuning it up with WINDAS once my laptop is fixed.

15 unthreaded holes, good job quality control person!

4 not pictured on the throttle body flange, intake manifold for M272 in a 2008 Mercedes.

Edit: I've been informed multiple times now and some very thorough helpful answers that the unthreaded holes are intentional. The tri-lobe bolts roll their own threads. I'm familiar with tri-lobe bolts. However my experience with them is that they're very tightly threaded and stay tight the whole way out, that wasn't the case here and when using a M6x1.0 bolt to confirm thread size of the hole it threaded normally and a nut threaded onto the bolts fine as well as well, which is also contrary to my tri-lobe fastener experience. It's a much milder lobe than I'm used to seeing which is probably why they came out easy and I didn't clock them as tri-lobe on disassembly. This is the first M272 intake manifold I've replaced, we're primarily not a Mercedes shop but we'll work on anything. I have worked on other Mercedes with this engine but for suspension stuff mostly as by the time we see them they're not worth this level of spend. For 200,000 miles this one is very clean and well kept!

1990 Nissan Sunny - in Chicago!

Strange car to see state side. GA16i, 5spd, LHD. Unfortunately the engine has a severely blown had gasket and other possible issues from overheating and we just can't find any used with the same miles or reman engines, plus some other EUDM specific cooling system differences. Looks like we can't save this one sadly. The owner can't get it back home where they live either since they're here for work. It's probably going to scrap, unless there's anyone around Chicago interested in picking it up? I can pass contact info along to the owner.

Too many people ask if this is the office.

Several per week will ask if this is the office door while standing directly in front of the door. I don't understand.

I took a photo of our back door which is around the side of the building but I can't edit it into this post. The back door looks the same but says DANGER DO NOT ENTER EMPLOYEES ONLY with a second sign that says OFFICE with an arrow pointing toward the front of the building. This building isn't mine, I just work here. The building could definitely use more and better signage but the owner is Dutch...not to stereotype but it's true what they say.

Just Rolled in: Prius sometimes stalls and/or won't start.

https://preview.redd.it/czwa5uo53mch1.jpg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96e0a760fb147ec357c2e99e7f3cab24c3dfaddb

Fuse AM2 found after screwing around for a couple hours. Car came in dead in the water, only goes into neutral, READY is on, fuel gauge works. Scanned a bunch of weird codes for HV, HV battery, transmission, etc, and A LOT of U1000 no ECM comms codes in every module too. Clear everything, got READY, goes into gear, moves and drives around the lot and shop for a couple days, then just dies about 3 feet outside the door at 5 on Friday. Push it in, deal with it next week, but noted that the fuel gauge shows empty then full and flashing with no engine light on. Now it's next week and I have to deal with it. Connect scan tool, no comms with ECM, flashing fuel gauge, no check engine light. I check all the fuses under hood and under dash, everything shows as good when testing from the little metal contacts. All fuses have power on both sides. I probe into the evap purge solenoid as an easy access point to check for ECM power, nothing. Pull the glove box, jiggle the ECM around, no change. Randomly I notice the fuel gauge is now working and so is the check engine light. It starts, runs, have ECM comms with live data, etc, once again. Boss walks over to check in and collaborate since they're free. We review what I've found, done, etc, brainstorming some he's just kind of resting his knee on the bumper jiggling the car lightly and it dies. We start wiggling wires, tapping on modules, all the usual stuff. Re-check fuses and this time when I probe AM2 I notice that when I push on one side it acts like a blow fuse (ground at one side power at the other) but when I move the probe slightly now it's a good fuse again. Then I notice a little spark as I wiggle the fuse side to side. Pull the fuse out and found that. Looks like someone ripped the leg off the fuse on purpose to cause problems. I've ran into missing fuses and relays before a few times due to tampering from parents, children, relatives, spouses, workers, etc. but this is my first time seeing a fuse intentionally tampered with like this.

Prius update: Brake system works fine, built Toyota Tough.

Posted about a poorly diagnosed Prius the other day, another shop read codes and said it needed a booster pump assembly. It was out of brake fluid because a line rusted through. No fluid, no pressure, sets codes, simple as. Got the lines in made up tidy, bled it, test drove it, brakes work great!

Mostly ran copper alloy, I love my tight access flair tool, nothing you can't take apart with a torch, and the sprung brake line cutters are awesome you just tighten one time then turn until it's cut. Use electrical tape to keep the fitting at the line end while you stab the line through tight spaces and put a rubber cap on the end so you don't get dirt in it. Lines will probably outlast the vehicle now.

Customer states: This is overheating

Replaced water pump aasy on a 2016 Audi A3 about 2 weeks ago. Customer stated that after repairs they only drove home and a couple short trips. On their first longer trip the guage showed overheating. Customer showed front desk a photo of the gauge at halfway and drew a picture of the same thing. Customer insists their car never overheated before.

Their car isn't overheating. I don't know what kind of bug they have in their rug but ain't a thing wrong with that coolant temp.

4th gen Dash noises in hot weather - fixed!

Pardon my knee.

Add fuzzy style cloth Tessa tape between the V shaped parts that make the driver side center dash vent. Also add tape between the V shaped assembly and the vinyl dash pad edge. Completely resolved the creaking and crunching noises from my dash in hot weather. Hopefully this helps someone else.

Other shop states "needs the brake pump"

2010 Prius with the same rusted brake line they all get. Codes are from the zero fluid. Twats.

Watch out where the huskies go

And don't you fill that yellow fuel.

2018 Chevy Cruze, customer states "the other guy plugged in the computer and it said I need fuel pump, it's been bucking and running hard now it doesn't start".

Diesel. He put in some Diesel. I think this is the first one this year, the high price must be keeping people away from putting it in their gasoline cars.

We got a new fridge at work.

Formerly the microwave was atop the older shorter fridge, the new taller fridge would have put the microwave to the ceiling. So the best place for it was here. Between the urinal and toilet impinging on the space of both. Never mind the knee jerk feeling of possible sanitary issues.
