In 1672, Rev James Smithson collapsed in Berwick-upon-Tweed Parish Church after delivering a passionate sermon on 'Thou shalt do no murder', and was carried back to his house, where the body of his wife Sarah was found on the floor. He was later hanged for the crime.

At around midnight on 8th July 1945, Private Clarence Bertucci climbed a guard tower at a POW camp in Salina, Utah, and machine-gunned the tents in which the prisoners were sleeping, killing 9 and injuring 19 in "the worst massacre at a POW camp in U.S. history".
