Disclaimer: This is just for fun. A new way to experience the albums and extended tracks. The original tracklist from the albums initial release is indeed the definite one, the only one of any real merit and is closes to the way the artist intended for us to hear their music. Unless some soulless studio execs got their greedy little hands on them... Anyways. That's the disclaimer.

I wrote this Director Retrospective Timeline for my 3rd favorite horror director David Schmoeller. It's long, but his filmography has gone unsung for too long.

The Sorcerer of Suspense: An Alchemist in Tension and the Obscure.

Grounded Surrealism; David Schmoeller conjures creeps through the lens of a leering eye that stalks with an ominous anticipation, as if a jump scare is bound to erupt or a deranged maniac is about to make their move. Whether in ethereal dreams, glamorous set locations, or in seclusion, trapped with a deeply psychologically damaged psychopath (that probably has supernatural powers), you'll be worried what happens next..

Tourist Trap (1979)

Taken off the beaten path while traveling through secluded backwoods. A group of young adults find that they may have taken a wrong turn and this old, run-down tourist attraction might just be a "Tourist Trap" in this pre-Friday the 13th, elevated, grief-induced classic slasher.

The Seduction (1982)

Looking to switch things up on his sophomore film, Schmoeller steps away from traditional horror to focus on the psychological thrills of deranged obsession. What happens when your stalker lives around the corner and is your number one fan?

Crawlspace (1986)

Continuing his streak of something different, Schmoeller takes us through the hidden passages of a sinister apartment building. Hidden in plain sight, run by a psychotic, nazi-worshipping landlord, played by the terrifyingly unhinged Klaus Kinski - who gets off on inflecting pain. Lore has it Kinski was so difficult to work with... a producer tried to convince Schmoeller to go halfsies on hiring a hitman and collecting the insurance. Schmoeller declined and the producer probably said it was just a joke... Through all the hell in just making this film, you'll definitely think twice about your landlord. Thank goodness the experience didn't cause this early of an early retirement for Schmoe.

Catacombs (1988)

Schmoeller lowkey directs his masterpiece; a supernatural catholic horror. Shelved for 5 years then released as "The Curse IV: The Ultimate Sacrifice (1993)" under an existing franchise that it had no connection to. Here he dives deeper into his signature themes of "fish out of water" in a "set location is a character in itself" with "some kind of resurrection/plans beyond the grave thing going on". While again switching subgenres but this time to a religious paranormal horror. and then i started to wander what his take on A Nightmare On Elm Sequel would have looked like

/ Ghost Town (1988)

I'm pretty sure Schmoeller had secretly ghost-directed Ghost Town and used "Richard Governor" as a pseudonym, but that's just speculation. Freddy's little cous Eddy is main baddy. Schmoeller did for sure cowrote it.

Puppet Master (1989)

Just a year later Schmoeller directs another cult classic, Puppet Master. Beautifully shot, fun, yet taken seriously. Puppets gone wild, but the scares are there, and it's kinda dark with a bit of twisted fantasy. Enter an ethereal creepshow, each puppet has their moment to shine and are up against a somewhat shady group of psychic "protagonists". The set location looks rich and dreamlike, like you're standing on the kitchen counter within the luxurious Mansion. There are some frames that truly encapsulates the very essence of 80's horror.

The Arrival (1991)

Already, ready to dive headfirst into another completely different Subgenre, Schmoeller found his next opportunity with a film that finally put a "Sci-fi Horror" notch under his belt. Stepping out of his comfort zone to direct a script he didn't write for the first time, he once again pulled off a massive genre shift from the supernatural to alien entities. Yet, it remains pure Schmoeller at its core. The film beautifully expands his signature obsession with resurrection, shifting the focus to the moral weight of immortality. As humanity starts affecting the once-soulless entity, the creature must suddenly deal with the complex emotional reality of its own eternal life—and whether it is worth the death of others. It's completely obvious why this script called to him and plays out like an extended, low-budget episode of The X-Files, but with body horror and stuff not suitable for basic cable. Needs a to be released on Blu-ray.

Netherworld (1992)

A return to form and to his studio home, Full Moon. Schmoeller decided to just have fun, go for it, take the ball and run, and he encouraged everybody on set to do the same. This time, he focused his magical ability to really bring a set location to life on a Louisiana-swamp-brothel. The scenery spans from a lush and luxurious mansion elegantly shot like a painting, to down by the bayou where the flies can get up in there... to even a dingy, labyrinth dungeon that is just the beginning of where our world descends into the nether. And there's a few spooky birdpeople that will turn your poop white.

The Secret Kingdom (1998) & Search for the Jewel of Polaris: Mysterious Museum (1999)

In the late '90s, Charles Band created a family-friendly subsidiary studio called Moonbeam Entertainment. He once again hired Schmoeller as his reliable, steady hand to direct low-budget, high-concept children's fantasy films. Unfortunately, losing pretty much all creative control during this era, Schmoeller found himself operating as a "studio fixer" and a director-for-hire. Still, he got to flex what he could pull off on a low budget through sheer execution and reliability. Ultimately, the assembly-line experience wore him down, leading him to transition into teaching film at UNLV to regain control over his own art. I'm pretty sure i've seen both, but i'm not quite sure, as my memory isn't that good.

(Personally, I would have loved to see at least two films released throughout the 2000s; I can't even imagine what kind of wild left turns he would have surprised us with.)

Little Monster (2012)

The single most grounded, disturbing, and controversial film of his entire life.

I'm too freaked out to watch this one.

EDIT: i completely forgot
