I’ve been making jewelry for 40 years and probably bought this bottle of steel shot cleaner 15 or 20 years ago. Crazy bit of crystallized chemicals trying to squeeze itself out of the bottle.
I've been scouring for reports about this year's cruise and am mostly coming up short. This will be our first year attending and I'm curious - from those who have been in the past - how far in advance will they announce the stars and the movie schedules? From this five year old post, the guests and movies were announced in mid-August, but here it is practically September, so I'm getting anxious.
I'm also curious about the costume contest. I read about this AMAZING costume that won the contest two years ago, and wonder what some other entries looked like or how elaborate folks get ('cuz obviously this was pretty elaborate and I'm clueless how they got it on board!)
Hubby and I have been on several Star Trek cruises, so we aren't unfamiliar with theme cruises, but we are particularly excited about getting last-minute tickets (just yesterday!) for this one.
My Father-in-Law passed away last January, and the family is just now in the process of working with the executor on the distribution of his estate. Everyone in the family is getting what they want, with only a few negotiations of trades here and there. I was the lucky recipient of some antique silver, which is a collecting passion of mine, and my husband and I are getting Belle Epoque area lithographs as it is an aesthetic no one else in the family is really interested in.
However, most recently during a clean-out of closets, I stumbled upon a jewelry box of plated cufflinks, which I can repurpose into other jewelry, but I also spied this beautifully designed pocket watch chain. It is pretty hefty and substantial, even though the links themselves are hollow-constructed.
My initial inclination was that it was rolled gold and to shorten it into a bracelet for me, but that would require destroying one of the links. Before dissecting it for repurposing, I spent considerable time with a loupe and was pretty chuffed to stumble on a 9C stamp, so low gold and indicative of the era.
Fortunately, keeping it whole, it does fit around my wrist twice, with the bar part (which would have gone into a button hole) acting as a bit of a hanging charm. I may look for a 9C heart locket to add to it, making the dangling portion a bit more decorative.
I am a well-seasoned classic movie lover (50+ years of watching, collecting, etc.) My husband jokes that I’m a walking IMDB and I do pride myself on having seen 99% of any movie that shows up on any Must See lists (pre-1960s) as well as making an effort to see every film nominated for any Oscar.
With that caveat, coupled with the fact that as a surgeon, my husband doesn’t quite have enough bandwidth to sit through a two-hour movie every night.
However, recently I’ve stumbled upon a few gems that had been previously unknown to me; perhaps because they didn’t involve the A-list actors, were ill-reviewed when released (or over shadowed by greater films that year), or ostensibly lost due to distribution issues.
My collection of Noir films is in the 250 range as so many of those were made as B-reel movies and are perfectly short, but now I’m looking for more. Edited to add: Please don't suggest any Noir. I've likely already seen them!
Last week, Hubby and I watched 1941’s They Met in Bombay with Clark Gable and Rosalind Russel (92 minutes), 1958’s Chase a Crooked Shadow with Anne Baxter and Richard Todd (87 minutes), and right now, am enjoying 1942’s Spy Ship with Irene Manning and Craig Stevens (62 minutes).
Can we start a list of little-known gems in the 90-minute or less range?
Wandering Total Wines & More (and hoping to spy a Monkey47 Sloe Gin), I was surprised to see several Procera Blue Dots on the shelf.
Do I pull the trigger for a C-note? Why not; it’s been on the “must try” list long enough. And while I was hoping for revelatory, alas the heavens did not open up and there was no celestial angel choir.
A bit hotter than I expected, it is forward with anise notes and has the pink peppercorn finish I was told to expect. If I concentrate, I can detect some faint citrus.
I think a third of the expense is in the showy bottle. It will probably be relegated to martinis as this was not the sipping gin I was hoping for.

For World Goth Day, this picture of me, circa 1980, shows what a trendsetter I was in my high school (LOL). But if you look closely, my “tie-tac” was a button of the early Numan black line portrait. That’s how long I’ve been a fan.
I am currently in the middle of the Viking Voyager cruise from Istanbul to Athens. I had to bring a computer with me to work, and on the first day I had no problems accessing ChatGPT. However, by Day Three ChatGPT seems completely inaccessible.
Anyone have any idea why this might happen? ChatGPT works fine on my phone, but is difficult for me to transfer my work from there to my computer.
