Project Management

Hey everyone. I’m an engineer with 8 YOE and just became a project manager. I’m looking for books or podcasts that will teach me how to do my job. Tips, workflows, rules of thumb etc.

I’m currently operating based on what I think needs to happen and my own experience of what I wish PMs had done earlier in my career. I just got my first project out to bid and it went okay but I know there’s area for improvement.

Civil engineer PM that needs a change

I’m looking to pivot to a different industry. Possibly engineering consulting for tech items engineering firms use (CAD, GIS, Bluebeam, Procore). I have used all these programs and think my real world experience would be an asset to these companies.

Any other civil engineers pivots to another industry with any success?

I need to make at least $125k.

My new job has me eating humble pie

I have 8 YOE and just started a new PM role in January. I’ve never been a PM before and this role is a mix of management and design. I have to be firing on all cylinders all the time. I was very confident going into this role but it’s been a steep learning curve and every day I’m reminded how much I have to learn. If I had to give my EIT self some advice, it’s find a really good engineer to work under. I realize now how shitty my previous bosses have been for technical development and wish I had figured it out sooner.

I’m looking for advice for my bf. He’s 37 and starting EMT school this summer then fire academy in the fall. He’ll eventually do paramedic too. This is a second career for him after a bit of a rough patch. About 7 years ago he plead guilty to driving with a suspended license and registration. There were issues with court notifications so eventually they put out a warrant for failure to appear. He didn’t know this was happening/thought all his paperwork was squared away.

More recently, he was arrested for stealing food and settled for “adjudication withheld.” He was broke and make a dumb decision. If he’s upfront with all of this, would he be hireable? He’s perfect for this field and genuinely wants to help others but I’m scared his record will hold him back. We live in FL if that makes a difference. According to what I’ve read he is not disqualified and it’s decided on a case by case basis, but I want some real world input.

If you’ve been in a similar situation, will you share your experience?

If you’re a hiring manager, can you offer insight?

I’m looking for support and didn’t know where else to go. If there’s another sub better suited for this, can you point me in that direction?

I never thought I’d be in this situation. I’m an upper middle class white girl- I hang out with the “right” people. This doesn’t happen to me, it happens to other people, right? Wrong. I’ve had a taste of that humble pie and would like to share my story. I am looking for support, advice, and general empathy.

My boyfriend is 37 and has had two incidents. The first one was ~7 years ago with a criminal traffic case. It was Covid times and his wife had just died, so car registration and insurance weren’t at the top of his priority list. He has several failure to appears, was eventually arrested, and ultimately plead guilty. He said the guards insinuated a public defender wouldn’t make a difference so he plead guilty at first appearance. To this day, it’s coming up in background checks and preventing delivery service companies from hiring him. He’s starting EMT school this summer and I’m nervous he will have a hard time getting hired because insurance companies won’t insure him.

The second incident happened this past January. He was in a really bad place and didn’t want to ask for help. He stole food and Christmas presents from Target 4x total. He was subsequently arrested, got PTI for the first case and has adjudication withheld on the remaining three cases (consolidated) and given 12 months probation. He knows it was wrong and has paid his dues. Turns out AW may as well be a guilty verdict, which we didn’t know at the time.

So with the driving record and theft charge, we’re learning just how much impact that has on your life and how it will follow you around and haunt you.

Since going through all of this I have gained a lot more empathy for “criminals”. It’s not black and white. We will find a path forward but I fear it will be exhausting.

Does anyone do expert witnessing on the side? Seems like a good way to make supplemental income to take on a few cases a year. I have 8 YOE but I figure start young and make a name for yourself.

My growth has been up and down which isn’t the norm. I had some various health issues over the years and had to work less.

My 7% raise came in late 2024 after getting my PE (note, after being actually licensed, not just passing the test) and then jumped about 30% when I switched firms and became a PM. It’s been a rough ride for me but I’m proud of myself for sticking it out.

For those wondering when you feel like you’ve “made it” and are making enough money/being compensated fairly; I’m starting to feel that relief now.

(31 F, 8 YOE)

ETA: I live in FL MCOL area.

Engineer intern is what we call EITs in FL. I wasn’t an actual intern.

ETA 2: This gained a lot more traction than I thought it would and now realize my post may be confusing. I used AGI because it’s the only data I had but would still show the general trend of my salary. Before taxes I started out at 60k and now I’m at 125k + 15k bonus.
