Help running a Roleplay-Focused LARP in London, Ontario

The Situation:

So, I've recently been co-opted by my local nerd community and a professional event planner to essentially design a LARP for my city. There is one other LARP in the city, but it has more niche theming, and is generally pretty inaccessible both in terms of new players, but also in terms of disability given that it's pretty much just combat. So, with this LARP, I'm looking to make an experience that's not only physically accessible (as I myself am an ambulatory wheelchair user), but also accessible to new players who may want to get into LARPing as a hobby, and regular LARPers who may be interested in joining a new group. I'm planning to make it a D&D-esque, High-Fantasy, Roleplay-focused LARP event, that can, if all goes well, happen regularly.

As such, I'm currently working on designing a system that can easily adapt characters directly from D&D (without infringing on any WOTC branding of course) or even other fantasy LARP systems, with a large focus on roleplay and player-driven narratives rather than combat. Combat may make small appearances, but largely more as friendly duels as a competition, that sort of thing. This is to ensure that combat is pretty much entirely opt-in and non-essential so that players with mobility issues or other disabilities (like myself) don't feel like they're missing out on a large part of the experience just because of a factor they cannot control. LARP is meant to be for everybody.

I say I've been "co-opted", essentially meaning I was frustrated with the inability for me to properly attend the local LARP and talking about it in a local city discord, and a lot of people there got frustrated with the situation as well, and ended up telling me that if I made the kind of LARP that I wanted to experience, then they and several others would certainly join. Shortly after, a member of that discord, who has done professional event planning several times in the past and has run a number of small businesses as well contacted me saying they would be interested in partnering with me and handling the backend/business/logistical side of things if I wanted to handle the actual game itself. I've been a DM for close to a decade, I used to attend a boffer LARP years ago, my job for the past few years has essentially been doing online event planning for roleplay and worldbuilding projects that were pretty much just Digital LARPs, and on top of that I do have a large chunk of savings to make this happen; so I made the decision to agree and start working on the project!

What I need help with:

While I do believe I can manage writing a roleplay-focused system with some help and playtesting done by friends, and I can certainly manage writing some quests and narratives, I am only one person, and so I'm looking for people in the local area interested in running other NPCs (I myself will be an NPC) or being referees. Additionally, while not necessary for the event to function, additional writers/gamemasters or prop-makers would certainly be helpful to the event. While I don't expect it to blow up overnight (it's a brand new LARP after all, it takes time), I do believe I can probably secure 20-30 people for the first event, and we're looking at doing a "tavern night" sort of deal, kinda as a social starter with a lower up-front cost for us event planners and coincidentally starting the campaign with a stock standard "you all meet in a tavern" scene.

I will be working to compensate people for their time of course, we're looking at charging some small ticket prices to help make sure it's not a total money sink and volunteers would either get reduced ticket prices or full ticket coverage depending on their role. Also probably some pizza because it's really the least I can do to thank people.

So, TL;DR, we need:

  • NPCs
  • Referees

We would also be glad to have:

  • Additional Writers/Gamemasters
  • Prop Makers

And we will be compensating our Volunteers with:

  • Reduced or Fully Covered Ticket Prices, depending on your role
  • If it's in the budget, pizza after the event as a thank you

Contact:

If you're interested in helping me make this LARP a reality by volunteering, and you're in the local area, reach out to me via Discord, my username is ".autumnly", just send me a friend request and/or shoot me a message!

Is there any way to implement a Server Queue in Forge 1.20.1 (Without Plugins)?

Does anybody know of any mod I could use in Forge 1.20.1 to implement a Server Queue for my server? I expect a decent bit of traffic once the project launches fully, so a Queue would help massively in keeping player counts to a manageable amount for a modded server (as I know large player counts tend to impact performance even more in modded settings).

I've been searching, and I can't find any mods for this version. All the mods I found specifically for Queues were closed-source and for 1.21x, but maybe there's a mod out there that has server queues as a feature that I just haven't found yet. I just don't want to try making some sort of Hybrid Server to run Plugins and Mods because I do not trust their performance, compatibility, and stability.

Worldpainter Refusing to Populate Terrain with Modded Biomes?

https://preview.redd.it/1r43q3ll6qhh1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=ba03417914dfef8924b4717337d2252bddbea4a3

The first image is how the custom modded biome I've made (Right) appears in a worldpainter world after exporting. I've tried checking the populate terrain button in the export settings, I've tried adding a populate layer over-top of the whole world, literally nothing changes. I've made custom modded biomes for previous maps of mine with zero problems, so I'm not sure what's causing the issue this time.

The second image is how the biome is supposed to look, this is running in the same instance, just a fresh, single-biome world I made. The biome DOES generate features, but seemingly just not in my worldpainter world?

Help would be appreciated, I don't know what's going on here.

What do you think would be the worst possible choice of Animal for a Speculative Evolution Seedworld?

For a recent project I had to do some research on a now-extinct animal called the Great Auk, a penguin-like seabird in the Auk family that was hunted to extinction by humans in the 19th century. From all accounts, they seemed like pretty helpless animals. Hunting them was described with the ease that one might go pick an apple off a tree, generally just helpless, and essentially the cold-water equivalent of the Dodo.

Anyways, it got me thinking about how genuinely interesting it would be to create a Speculative Evolution Seedworld (Akin to projects like Serina or Kappa), but choosing absolutely terrible animals to populate them. The kind of animals that are generally helpless, evolved into a biological corner, but maybe, just maybe, wouldn't immediately go extinct in their new environment.

I personally think that The Great Auk would be a perfect candidate for that kind of thought experiment, as it's evolved into a very specific biological niche, is generally quite bad at existing (but not so bad it would 100% go extinct immediately), and I personally just think is a funny animal to make a speculative evolution project about. However, you could also go with all sorts of animals, Koalas being another animal that comes to mind, due to how specifically evolved and generally terrible at surviving they are.

Anyways, I just wanted to share my quick idea with the world since I know I'm likely never taking it anywhere due to the amount of projects I am currently swamped with, and hopefully it can be a fun means of discussion for others to come up with additional candidates for "Worst Animal to put on a Seedworld"!

What systems and aspects of live in the Medieval Era (Mid 13th Century British Isles) do you think would be the most important in a "Medieval Peasant Simulation"?

Preamble:

I've been working on a project for a good while (About 2 years now!) that aims to be as meaningfully realistic of a medieval peasant simulator as I can make as a developer with a small team, and while we do technically use a "Lowest of Low Fantasy" label to be able to have some leniency, I'm still trying to be as accurate as I can be within our limitations to create the most realistic behavioural and experiencial outcome, even if the mechanics themselves can't be 100% true to real life.

For clarification, we're using a custom-coded modded Minecraft pack as the medium of making this simulation (Gives us essentially an easy-to-develop game engine with things like Multiplayer made for us already), and while we've removed all the "Minecraft-ey" things and all the Anachronistic Elements, sometimes we have to keep a base feature of the game or a mod in for gameplay purposes and reflavour it as something that may not be 100% accurate but fits the world a lot better, like reflavouring Tomatoes in the pack as a fake, edible european nightshade, whereas most new-world plants are either removed or replaced with a similar old world alternative (Potatoes to Parsnips, for example).

Additionally, we're not using a map of a real location on Earth, we're using a completely custom map designed to mimick the general environment and conditions of the British Isles, so we can't say that we're fully true to real-world history. I did originally plan to use a real heightmap of Britain (or even a smaller place like the Isle of Man) but the available heightmaps just did not cut it for the level of detail I needed for the simulation's environment, and I ended up using a modified heightmap of a smaller section of british landscape that was turned into an island.

The Question:

So, with the basic context out of the way, that brings me to the point of the post. While I do have a special place in my heart for medieval history and it's certainly a large interest of mine, I'm no historian and I certainly don't know everything, so I feel it's best to ask a community that probably knows these things more thoroughly and might have things in mind I've never thought of.

So, what element(s) of medieval life and society do you think are crucial to making a "Medieval Peasant Simulator" work in a way that is accurate to real-world history? Essentially, what core elements of society in this time and location (13th Century England) contributed the most to the core "experience" of the medieval period.

Keep in mind with suggestions, we already have several systems in place:

  • Overhauled Professions and Crafts to focus players on specialization and time committment more instead of being a "Jack of All Trades", and in some ways entirely limiting players ability to "multiclass"
  • A system of renting land from the king/local lord and having all other land not explicitly defined as public land by players in power be unusable for building or large-scale resource gathering, done via "Land Deeds"
  • A local political system entirely governed by players (aside from the basic ruleset we've designed to avoid a complete mess from forming) with Lords/Ladies at the top and then varying levels of power, responsibility, and tasks until you reach your average peasant. There are no varying levels of peasant because, to be quite frank, being an indentured servant isn't really that fun from a gameplay perspective, and we need to balance between recreating the experience accurately and not driving away potential players that can give us useful data and a playerbase due to the gameplay not being enjoyable.
  • An economy that encourages players to engage in their profession to be able to get the necessary money to do, well, anything (Buy Land, Trade for resources you need or goods you cannot/do not have the time to make for yourself, Pay your Taxes, Expand your operation to do your profession to a higher degree of efficiency, etc.)
  • A locational resource system for important resources like ores (Rather than being spread across the map evenly, ores are placed in large, near-inexhaustible deposits sparingly across the map) that encourages players to create and manage supply lines, distribution, and trade to a higher degree than if every settlement could be entirely self-sufficient in resources
  • A system of imports and exports from/to "The Mainland" to supplement supply lines that fall short (for a higher cost, of course) and to introduce a flow of money back into the economy.
  • Diseases and Afflictions, which are certainly going to be made a lot less vicious and deadly as they could be during various parts of history, because honestly dying of tuberculosis due to circumstances entirely out of your control is not fun and would make players quit out of frustration, but can still negatively affect a players gameplay if they do something risky or stupid or dangerous that would get them sick or injure them in real life.
  • Players only get a single life per-character, and while players can make a new character after a short death cooldown, they still lose all their belongings, money, and land when they die, so it's essentially starting fresh from every perspective, just not forcing players to stop playing forever if they happen to die. Additionally, we've made the decision that common "Accidental" causes of death should be looked over for this system, to avoid, again, frustration when a player dies from something they had no control over and could not have forseen. Most common ways of dying are already taken out, since there's no monsters to kill the player, but there are still dangers and environmental factors that can lead to a character's death.

Now, that does sound like a lot, but I'm sure there is things I couldn't have thought about, which is why I'm asking the community. If you leave a suggestion, I want to thank you for helping to give more accuracy to this project! I am not trying to self-promote in any way here (which is why I am not providing a link or anything), I am simply trying to get people's thoughts.

Edit: I just realized the title has a spelling mistake in it. Damn my arthritic hands.

Any good animal mods for Forge 1.20.1 that add European Animals?

I'm working on a very niche and specific server set in a region that is pretty much like medieval britain, and I'm currently trying to find animals to bulk out the wildlife in this server and having a hard time.

A lot of the mods that I've found that add animals either add a couple regionally-acceptable animals and a ton that don't fit the pack, or entirely focus on "exotic" animals. The only mod I could find that adds some simple and common animals is unfortunately exclusively North American animals, and after I've just spent the past 3 days removing all "Anachronistic" plants, trees, and crops from the game, it'd feel wrong to go with animals from a completely inaccurate region of the world.

I don't necessarily need animals that are from only the UK or whatever, it's a fantasy world after all so it can be mostly any european animal, but I still can't find any good mods. The current mods I'm using are Naturalist, Faunify, and Fowl Play, and I've cut out any specific animals that don't fit from those mods. If anyone knows any more mods that add temperate, european animals, I'd appreciate some help.

Am I at Risk of Mercury Poisoning from Tuna?

For context, groceries in my country are at all all time price high, and I am disabled, which prevents me from doing basically any cooking about 90% of the time, as well as meaning that I have very very very little income to afford groceries.

As such, my diet for the past 4-5 months has pretty much just been Canned Tuna, Rice, and a cheap sauce every single day, usually multiple times a day, pretty much only broken up by occasionally ordering something that's better for me with vegetables in it (oh how I miss vegetables) or sometimes doing some cooking when I have the physical ability for it (which is not often). I eat it because it's cheap, filling, and I have a handful of dietary restrictions as well, so canned tuna and rice is the best bang for my buck because it's insanely cheap and keeps well (and other meats and proteins either require cooking or are way too pricey for me).

I feel terrible pretty much all the time, but that isn't like, new, I've been dealing with chronic pain, tremors, weakness, high blood pressure, etc. for years, and frustratingly, basically those are all the symptoms of mercury poisoning, so I have no way to tell what's just my disabilities/chronic illnesses making me miserable vs. what might be mercury poisoning. Which is kinda a problem.

I know that it is very possible for me to be getting mercury poisoning from this, so it's kinda a bit of a stupid question in the title, but I just need to know whether maybe I'm just overthinking and worrying too much about it. I'm not sure really at this point how much change I can make to my diet, as even shopping at the cheapest stores and getting the cheapest ingredients, I'm usually spending almost all of the money I have just on groceries alone.

After being a Mod Texture Artist for years, I've decided to open Skin Commissions!

These are just a handful of my favourite skins I've done (I have like 70 different variations on my own skin lol).

I have a portfolio of skins, textures, and models along with pricing on my Commission Site! Just go to my Linktree and you'll see the site listed there!

I made a Backrooms-themed Starter Base for The Vault!

Lots of different mods used in this video, but the custom little tape lines and eyes and stuff are done with Immersive Paintings Graffiti, and a lot of the blocks and decor is from Abyssal Decor, Cluttered, or Industrial Hellscape!

If you're confused about what The Vault is, it's an SMP I run where we make our own mods, pretty simple.

It's pretty dark here, almost like some sort of... Dark World....

This is one of the mods I've been developing for The Vault (an upcoming modding SMP), called Darkworld.

I'll answer a few questions I'm sure I'll be asked here right now:

>Is this a Deltarune Mod?

It's inspired by Deltarune, but is not a recreation of any of the content within Deltarune. The only big similarity is that there's a thing called "The Darkworld" where it's... yk... dark. Otherwise, it's just inspiration.

>Can I Download this?

No, it's entirely made just for The Vault (and mainly as a lore thing) and it has like 5 different dependencies that all need to be specifically configured, not bothering with trying to release this somewhere as a standalone mod.

>Are these effects edited in?

Nope! Other than cutting out the pause menu and adding fading in/out, this is one unbroken recording. All the visual changes happen in real-time and all the sounds you hear are ingame.

If you want to keep up-to-date on this, I have a Youtube Channel where I'm gonna be posting some long-form videos on The Vault (which will eventually include a video on Darkworld) as well as a Discord Server for all of my projects.

The Vault [Mod-making SMP] [Modded] [Forge 1.20.1]

The Vault is a Forge 1.20.1 Server with a simple premise: Players on the Server can create Mods for the Server. Now, this is not a brand new concept, however, there's a few differences between The Vault and other similar projects!

Firstly, The Vault isn't some giant YouTuber SMP with Scripted Lore, it's all for fun at the end of the day. Now, this isn't to say Content Creation and Lore is not allowed. Doing Lore or RP is encouraged, just as long as it feels natural and not forced or scripted, and Streamers/YouTubers are welcome (a handful of the members will likely be doing streaming themselves!). We do have a handful of bigger creators and modders (The Developers of Even Better Nether, Create: Garnished, Compression, the Streamer/Youtuber Cosmonautic, etc.), but it's still down to earth.

Secondly, we do something special before the Server Launches! Everyone will be randomly assigned a part (or multiple parts) of the game to make a mod around! It can be a small little content mod, it can be a total overhaul, as long as it fits, you're free to make whatever you like!

Now, a couple of things to note! Firstly, this server is unsurprisingly very queer/trans. This is not a space for weird incel bigots. Secondly, the server is not exclusively limited to Modders, though if you're not a modder, you'll need to tell us what you can bring to the table is all. Third, this will be our 5th Season if my memory serves me correctly, however we're starting fresh with new players due to past issues with many of the old members from previous seasons.

And, finally, since this is a smaller SMP and we want good quality assurance, we are only accepting Modders who have a decent bit of experience. If you are brand new to modding or haven't publically released/worked on anything, we can't really accept you into the server, as we want to make sure things run and function smoothly. We DO allow MCreator users, HOWEVER, you will need good experience with it and again, you will need to prove you can make high-quality mods and not just retextured slop. MCreator is a perfectly fine tool, but you still need to know good modding practices to make something good with it.

The Vault [Modding Server] [SMP]
