RPM Check
A lot of us are running Noctua G2 fans in our rigs for both case fans and on our CPU heatsink or radiator. But what speed (rpm) do you run them at when gaming?

If I have several case fans spinning next to each other, is it normal to see a very slightly different spinning strobing effect at low rpm when watching them spin?
Based on my research I think this is normal as long as they’re operating within spec but can anyone with experience please confirm?
In the nvidia app there's a choice between "normal" (which downclocks the videocard when idle) or "prefer maximum performance" (which keeps the videocard running at least at base clocks at all times).
I gave normal a try but I feel like it can make performance stuttery like if I'm browsing the web and if a site has a lot going on as I'm scrolling so the videocard is constantly clocking up and down. I leave it set to "prefer maximum performance" even though it makes my videocard idle at a much higher temp, since idle temps don't matter as much to me.
I'm just curious which option you guys go with?
edit: You guys have convinced me, I'm going to give normal another try.
I was playing Final Fantasy 14 and all of a sudden the game crashed and it showed an error on the screen. Then it exited to desktop and my fans went to 100% for a few seconds and then it went back to normal.
I have a custom fan curve set in my bios so it's not controlled by any software in windows. I have:
9800X3D and Noctua NH-D15 G2
Asus Crosshair X870E Hero
Evga RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra power limited to 77%
Corsair HX1000i PSU
Caselabs Merlin SM8 case with 3 120mm Noctua G2 fans in front and 1 in rear
Windows 11
Any ideas what I could do to look into what happened? I've never seen this happen before. Nothing overclocked. Also it looks liker Evga precision X1 exited or closed on its own perhaps? (I use that to control my gfx fan curves and rgb).
Edit: actually, I’m not sure if the computer fans went to 100% or if that was the videocard. Will see if it happens again.
Edit 2: I’m sitting here watching the temps and they seem normal… maybe when it crashed, evga precision x1 stopped and it also ramped the fans for a few seconds?
Edit 3: I just remembered that I installed the latest nvidia drivers this morning. I’m going to roll back and see if that helps.
I’m running 3 120mm chromax black G2 fans in the front of my case using a noctua 3 fan splitter cable and connected to the same mobo header. When the PC is idle I’ve got them running at a low speed to be super silent. But looking at them closely it looks like they may be running at ever so slightly different speeds when comparing both identical 1850 rpm fans on the outside (there’s a 1750 rpm model in the middle).
Someone put my mind at ease - this is normal right? Based on my research looks like due to manufacturing tolerances and easier to see at low speeds? Do you guys see this with your fans too?
Edit: I just got done swapping cables around and checking the speed of each fan in the bios. Both 1850 rpm fans measured the same speed in bios so I'm going to chalk this up as nothing to worry about.
I have a 9800X3D and I know that these are designed to boost so that they hit 95C in certain scenarios, like during shader compilation in a videogame.
For example, in Tekken 8 (Unreal Engine 5) there's not a long shader pre-compilation when it starts up but I've noticed that it seems to do some kind of background compilation like right before I load into a stage.
I've got my CPU fans set to go 60% at 60C, 80% at 80C, and 100% at 90C. During gaming my temps are in the 60's and so my fan is at 60% but then when this spike happens then the fans briefly spin up and make some noise but then go back to normal once the match loads.
I'm thinking about just capping my max fan speed to something lower than 100%, say 80% or 75%. Will this just not let the CPU boost as high during shader compilation but otherwise not really matter as much? Or do y'all just let it boost up to 100% speed briefly?
I have all of my fans plugged directly into my motherboard which is an Asus Crosshair X870E Hero. I've got 3 120mm Noctua G2 fans in the front of my PC, 1 in the rear, and a Noctua NH-D15 G2 cpu cooler. I use my bios for setting my fans speeds. But when I first turn on my computer for a few seconds all fans run at full speed before it loads my profile and everything quiets down. Is there any way to prevent that? Do all of your computers do this too? I'm using the low noise adapters on all fans so fortunately they all don't go to the true 100% speed.

It's been just under 3 months since the AES+ was first announced. How are you guys feeling at this point? Especially those of you that never owned an actual Neo Geo before.
Are you guys still excited about the release?
Do you already know where you're going to put the system, arcade sticks, cartridges, etc...?
Do you plan to stick to AES+ games only or start buying OG AES games too?
Have any of you ended up cancelling and just sticking to modern ports or emulators instead?
Know what game you plan to play first?
I've never owned a Neo Geo before and think it will be cool to own one and fun to play when people come over, but I also think about how often it will get used, the cost vs the cheap steam ports I already have, etc... I also think there's value in owning physical games now that modern systems will soon be moving to digital only. So I'm just curious to see how y'all are feeling now that the newness has had some time to wear off.
Lately Capcom's been releasing a ton of modern collections of their old games. Fighting games, Megaman games, etc...
What do you guys think are the chances that Capcom releases a Megaman Legends Legacy Collection with Megaman Legends 1 & 2 and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne?
As far as Megaman collections go, it's the last MM franchise that hasn't gotten a collection right? I played MML 1 back in the day but never the other 2. It would be cool to see these running in 4K on modern platforms, plus the galleries and everything else the collections normally include.
I have MMX on SNES, MMX4 on ps1, and MM9-10 on ps3, but it would be cool to have all the MM games on Steam.
However, I read conflicting info on how good the ports are. Since the Steam sale is going on I wanted to ask - are they good ports on Steam or should I just not even bother with it?
For DOA5LR we can fight against Mai but we can't buy her anymore since the license expired. But could they just make her free to play at this point? or just give everyone the DLC for free if they can't charge?
I was at Bestbuy a few weeks ago and I was looking for the Sony Bravia 9 II because I wanted to see what the anti-glare coating was like. They didn't have any but I did see a massive 100" Bravia 3 II and it was amazing seeing a TV so big. It seems like a really immersive experience. Very affordable too at $3100 considering that the 75" Bravia 7 II is the same price and the 9 II is much more expensive.
Do you guys feel like having a TV so big for console gaming is worth it? Is the input lag on a huge TV worse? Does 4K look much worse at such a large size? Or would a smaller 75" 7 II look much better and be worth giving up the extra 25" for the same price? Unlike the 7 II and 9 II, this one has HDMI 2.1 on all four inputs.
I've never had a TV that huge and I'm wondering if the novelty wears off after a week or if it's worth going with an entry level model.
What do you go for, assuming you've never had a Neo Geo before? You plan to play the AES+ daily but mainly just keep the OG as a collectible and maybe play once or twice while you wait for the AES+.
Do you go for:
What would you guys do?
One thing that a lot of people don’t discuss when building a new PC is having a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for their PC. This is basically a box that you plug into the wall and then plug your PC into it. It has a large battery and if you lose power then it keeps your PC running for a while. Some have a screen where it can show how much time you have left, how much power you are pulling, and stuff like that too.
I finally bought one earlier this year and it’s been great to have. Today I was copying data from my computer to an external usb hard drive to back up my data and the power went out for second and then came back on. I panicked but then I looked at my computer and everything was ok - I had plugged both into my UPS so there was no impact.
They’re not super expensive either - mine was like $250 and fortunately they’re not affected by the AI price increases we’ve been seeing on a lot of PC components. Make sure you get one with enough wattage to support your computer… for example I have a 1000w power supply and my UPS is also 1000w.
Just a public service announcement not to overlook having a UPS!
Since MW4 is coming to the COD HQ launcher later this year, does that mean that BO6 will be removed from the launcher? Last year MW2 and MW3 were removed so just curious.
Like assume person A works in California and has team members all over North America, but the company wants to fly everyone out to a week long company AI conference in New York. Person A is a good employee who has been with the company for a very long time but they are super afraid of flying on airplanes and really don't want to go to the conference. Let's say your boss's boss wants people to go to it because they're super big on in-person stuff.
How would you handle this situation?
There's a Neo Geo AES game that I want but it's on the pricey side and prices between the neo geo store and ebay are about the same I've noticed. I'm holding out hope that maybe it gets a re-release on the AES+ in wave 2 for now. But just in case it doesn't, would you guys rather buy from the Neo Geo store or Ebay and why? thanks
They don’t have the G2 fans, G2 cooler, the H2 thermal paste, etc… why is that?
