Has ANY insurer ever counted your foreign driving experience? (US)

Question for those who moved to the US recently: how much did your car insurance change in the first year?

Trying to compare real numbers. What did you pay when you first arrived, and what was it after 6-12 months - did it actually drop?

And separately: did ANY company count your driving experience from back home? If yes, please share which one

Do any carriers give credit for foreign driving history or prior foreign insurance?

I'm doing personal research on how accessible financial products are for people who've recently moved to the US, and auto insurance keeps coming up as the hardest one - from what I've heard so far, clean driving history from abroad mostly doesn't count at rating.

Two things I'm trying to pin down from people who actually quote and write these policies:

A newcomer with 10 clean years abroad vs. the same driver with 10 US years, roughly how much more does the newcomer pay?

And once they build US history, how fast does the price come down, at the first renewal, or over several years?

Not looking for a quote. Appreciate any experience people can share.

Do recent immigrants actually crash more, or are they safer drivers? (Research, auto)

Hey everyone, I’m doing some university research on how accessible financial/insurance products are for new immigrants in the US, and I'm looking for some perspective from the claims side.

Right now, most carriers don't count foreign driving experience. Someone moving here from India or Europe with 10+ years of a clean record gets priced like a brand-new driver with zero experience, facing massive premium penalties.

Underwriting treats them as high-risk by default, but since you guys actually handle the aftermath, I wanted to ask: what does your day-to-day experience actually show?

When you handle claims for recent immigrants, what’s the vibe? Do they actually seem to get into more at-fault accidents because they're adapting to US roads, or do they tend to be just as safe/cautious as an average American driver of the same age?

Would love to hear what you guys see in the field vs. what the underwriting algorithms assume.

GEICO and newcomers to the US - does foreign driving history count, and how fast do rates drop?

Doing personal research on auto insurance for recent immigrants, and I keep hearing GEICO is where most of them land first - so you've probably seen these cases plenty.

Three things I'm trying to pin down:

  1. Does the quote flow count foreign license years or foreign insurance at all, or does the clock start from the US license?

  2. Someone with 10 clean years abroad vs. the same driver with 10 US years — roughly how much more does the newcomer end up paying?

  3. And when their price drops - how fast does it usually happen? First 6-month renewal, or years?

Do Progressive or any other carrier give any credit for a foreign driving record or prior foreign insurance?

Doing some personal research on how accessible financial products are for recent immigrants, and auto insurance seems like the hardest one.

When someone shows up with 10+ years of clean driving abroad and proof of continuous coverage back home, does any of that count at rating? Or are they treated as a brand-new driver regardless?

Mainly trying to understand from people who actually quote these:
- Does Progressive or any other carrier credit foreign history/insurance in practice?
- How much does having vs. not having it actually move the premium?

Not looking for a quote, just how this really works from the inside. Any experience appreciated.

Do US carriers give any credit for a foreign driving record or prior foreign insurance?

Mainly trying to understand from people who actually quote these:

**•**	Do any carriers credit foreign history in practice (not just in the manual), and which ones?

**•**	How much does having vs. not having that history actually move the premium for an otherwise identical driver?

Not looking for a quote, just how this really works from the inside. Any experience appreciated.

Does State Farm give any credit for a foreign driving record or prior foreign insurance?

I’m doing some personal research on how accessible financial products are for people who’ve recently moved to the US, and auto insurance keeps coming up as the hardest one.

The thing I can’t get a straight answer on: when someone arrives with 10+ years of clean driving history abroad and proof of continuous insurance in their home country, does any of that actually count at rating? Or do carriers (including State Farm) treat them as a brand-new driver with no history regardless?

A few specific things I’m trying to understand from people who actually quote and write these policies:

**•**	Does proof of prior foreign insurance count toward a continuous-coverage / prior-insurance discount, or does it have to be a US carrier?

**•**	How much does having vs. not having that history actually move the premium for an otherwise identical driver?

Not looking for a quote, just trying to understand how this really works from the inside. Appreciate any experience people can share.
