Planning a Burger King–Only NOBO Thru-Hike in 2027

I’m currently planning a March 2027 northbound thru-hike, with the goal of becoming the first person to complete the Appalachian Trail while eating only food purchased from Burger King.

To be clear, I plan to rely exclusively on Burger King items that I purchase in bulk from Burger Kings close to the trail. I’ll pack and carry these with me until I reach the next BK resupply.

I’ve mapped Burger King locations throughout the 14 trail states. Some sections appear surprisingly manageable, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic. Other sections will require much more careful planning and potentially carrying substantial quantities of Whoppers at one time. For example, after stopping at the BK in Farmington, Maine, more than 100 miles of trail remain in what could only be described as a Whopper desert. I expect to purchase and pack 47 double Whoppers with cheese for this section (9 days x 5500 calories per day / 1060 calories per burger = 47 burgers.) Fontana Dam to Davenport Gap and Franconia Notch through the Presidential Range toward Gorham will be similarly challenging BK gaps.

I understand that long-term food safety is probably the biggest obstacle. I am planning to use an insulated food pack combined with chemical heat packs similar to disposable skiing hand warmers. My thinking is that, with enough insulation, I should be able to keep the Whoppers/fries/onion rings/etc. within a reasonably safe temperature range for several days. I may also rotate the items inside the pack so that the ones closest to the heat packs do not become overly warm.

Also, I plan to gradually build up a tolerance to room-temperature fast food between now and March 2027. I’m going to start by making at least 50% of my diet consist of various two- to three-day-old fast-food items stored at room temperature. I’ll begin with fries and chicken nuggets before transitioning to burgers with mayonnaise.

I am looking for recommendations regarding insulated packs (ideally bear-resistant). So far I have not found anything that would suit my needs.

Any recommendations for chemical heat packs?

Also, what are your thoughts on using DoorDash or UberEats with regard to this being a supported hike rather than self-supported? My intention is to do the hike self-supported, but in many locations it would be far more practical for me to have my Burger King order delivered to me at a trailhead rather than me hiking or arranging a ride into town. Would the delivery car count as a support vehicle?

Finally, do you know of anyone else who has previously completed (or attempted) a single-restaurant thru-hike?

I recognize that this will add weight, expense, and gastrointestinal complexity to an already difficult hike. However, I believe the Appalachian Trail is ultimately about testing your limits, adapting to adversity, and having the courage to try new things.

Thank you in advance for the advice!

Fit check

Excited that this showed up at my door this weekend. I think the fit is ok? Looks ok to me. Just feels different than my previous pack. Also, when I tighten the load lifters, the frame is very close to the back of my head. Is that normal? I have 20 lbs in the pack but it’s sitting at the bottom. Not distributed like it would be when packed normally. Thoughts?

Is there anyway to stop this popup while using the DJI Mobile Receiver?

When I’m using this with my phone on a DJI gimbal, it always pops up if I switch away from MIMO between recordings and man it’s annoying. I know where the settings are, I just want it to record by default and have it never ask. 😩

Xmid 1 Pro pitch simplified…

A quick hack for never having to struggle again pitching your Xmid Pro 1(or Xmid, just add 4” to each measurement). If we’re gonna use the first principles of geometry then let’s use them…
Measure some cord (prefer the lightest no-stretch you can find like amsteel etc), one piece at 189” and marked at 77”( two sides red in diagram) ; one piece at 136” (hypotenuse orange in diagram).
Throw stake A in the ground and loop short leg end over it. Run it out to stake B at 77”. 90ish degree turn and down 112” to stake C. Don’t set C yet, run your 136” hypotenuse line from A across to C, put both ends around C and set where both are taut.
Repeat procedure from A to D to C with hypotenuse line from B to D.
Boom all your stakes square and a perfect pitch every time (on flat ground).
The cord sets you back ~ 40 grams but you can use it for guy lines or tarp ridge lines or hammocks etc. And the time and mental bandwidth it saves after a long day is priceless ( if you’re as ocd as me). Hope it helps someone, cheers.

Keep cats far, far away!

First night in my tent and see a bunch of holes in the inner part. Pretty sure my cat got in and was chasing the bee?

Also, my brand new therma rest neo air no longer holds air

A bittersweet story of my X-Mid 2 on the trail, and an offer for a creative collaboration.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a look at how my favorite shelter, the Durston X-Mid 2, performed during my previous high-altitude treks here in Colorado, and offer a unique production collaboration to the community.
I am a 25-year-old independent filmmaker and Ukrainian asylum seeker currently operating out of my vehicle in Durango, CO. Months ago, while hauling a 70 lbs cinema rig on a long trail, my knees completely blew out. I know exactly how brutal the mountain elements can be when your body or gear fails.
Recently, I crossed paths with an elderly hiker from Nebraska who was attempting the Colorado Trail with completely inadequate, damaged gear and failing knees. Remembering my own injury, I made a gut decision to give him my personal X-Mid 2 and my heavy backpack to ensure he made it off the trail safely, with an agreement to reconnect later. Unfortunately, due to an unstable situation and a dispute after he returned, I was unable to get my shelter back.
Next week, I am launching an off-grid mobile expedition north toward Yellowstone and Montana to film a long-form wilderness live-stream documentary using a mobile production workflow. I am moving forward with the route regardless of the elements.
As you can see from my uploaded archive grid, I absolutely love the geometry and weather resistance of the X-Mid. Since I am currently rebuilding my field setup entirely through my craft, I want to offer a creative skill-trade to this community or anyone connected to the brand:
I am fully available to trade my professional wilderness filmmaking, high-end cinematic B-roll, and product field photography. If anyone has a damaged, heavily repaired, or cosmetically flawed shelter gathering dust, or if the team has an unmarketable factory return, I would love to completely earn it through professional content creation for your platforms.
Let's connect if you are interested in a production-for-gear collaboration. Keep pushing the trails!

[S][USA-PA] DJI OSMO Mobile 8 and Insta360 Flow 2 Pro smartphone gimbals

Timestamp

Gallery

DJI OSMO Mobile 8 - $100 shipped

  • Comes with all shown original accessories
  • I might have the box for this, I'll look before shipping and include it if I do

Insta360 Flow 2 Pro - $125 shipped

  • Comes with all shown accessories
  • The MagSafe clamp is OEM from Insta360, usually sold separate

I just don't use these as much as I thought I would, I thought maybe I would like one more than the other but ended up just not being that into phone gimbals.

Both have been barely used, and honestly they are both good for what they are supposed to do, I couldn't pick a favorite.

I try and ship the next day after purchase, I will let you know if something prohibits that. I ship from PA 17603. Please reach out with any questions!

Is 6" enough?

Has anyone actually had 6-7" stakes pull out, where 8-9" stakes did not?

It seems common practice to use 8"+ stakes on the major tie-outs for extra peace of mind but are we just packing our fears?

What are yalls thoughts on hand crank generators? Viable option for emergency power or useless gimmick?

I like to be prepared on hiking and camping trips with emergency power backup (enough to make a phone call if needed) and was wondering if hand crank generators were a good option. I know I can always carry power banks but should I include this as a small emergency option in case I run out of power on longer trips?

New Action 6 firmware 1.04.14.02

Was really hoping for film tones in 1:1 mode, but I guess not this time.

It also added a second screen of options from the Swipe Down menu, giving quicker access to settings like external mics, grid lines, full front screen, ect.

[S] [USA-PA] DJI Action 5 Pro and Nikon Z 40mm f2

Timestamp

SOLD DJI Action 5 Pro - $250 shipped

Gallery with tons of photos.

I used this for backpacking videos for about a year and I am SUPER happy with the image quality, I only upgraded to the Action 6 because I want to use Film Tones that match across my 360 and A6 footage, I am too lazy for color grading.

Comes with battery, cage, 128 gb SD card, lens cover, DJI selfie stick / tripod, backpack strap (didn't work with my backpack, so never used), a tripod mount, and the remaining screen protectors.

Screen protectors have been on the whole time since the second it was out of the box, they have a few marks but the screens under are mint. A few scrapes on the metal around the lens and some small marks on the edges of the lens that do not effect image quality, and these are replaceable so not a big deal.

Nikon Z 40mm f2 - $150 shipped

Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3

Love this lens, but I found a good deal on the SE version and I grabbed that, so now this guy needs to find a new home! It’s a Nikon refurb and is pretty much flawless, no internal dust or any marks on the glass. I absolutely love this focal length for street.

Comes with both body caps and the JJC hood.

PayPal accepted. I am usually able to ship next day, same day if payment received by noon EST. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Gamersupps on the Appalachian Trail!

Did an overnight backpacking trip along the Appalachian Trail Saturday into Sunday, and my morning wake up juice was a combo of Raw Meat and Sakura Splash, and it went hard AF. Recommended combo for sure!

Big ups to sample packs, they are perfect for backpacking trips!
