Reform Shabbat practice

Although I grew up Jewish and going to Jewish Day School, my family was not particularly religious, and we did not do weekly Shabbat. I would have loved to, and I tried to start it a few times, but my parents both worked and my home life was tumultuous. Shabbat was always one of my favorite parts of Judaism, and Erev Shabbat was the time I looked forward to the most at school. I have a family of my own now, and I've recently been trying to have a weekly Shabbat. I make Challah and a meal, light the candles, do the Kiddush, and say Hamotzi. We sing a few songs and have a nice meal. We've also made it a family rule to put electronics away during it, and engage together. My 6-year old daughter is really loving it. We've had company over a few times, and we're all really enjoying this new family tradition. Personally, it's given me a way to reconnect with Judaism, and bring the rest of my family (my wife is not Jewish) into the fold. But I'm not sure if there's anything else we should add. My question for other Reform Jews: What traditions and practices do you do for Shabbat at home?

What are the biggest blind spots for liberals?

Everyone has blind spots. What groups of people do liberals simply not “get” or get completely wrong?

Visiting with family in December - hoping to experience authentic culture

I’ve been to Mexico City once by myself and loved it. I’m coming with my family, including my wife and 6-year old daughter in December. I’m hoping to bring them to some things that show off the incredibly rich culture of Mexico City, not just tourist traps. My daughter loves art and animals. Last time I didn’t really go to any art museums. Are there any that would be enjoyable for a 6-year old?

What is the funniest thing your toddler was/is obsessed with?

My daughter was absolutely obsessed with ducks when she was 1-3. We could be at the zoo in front of a rhino, but all she wanted to do was see ducks. She was also really into raw zucchinis and used to sing to them. I have some friends whose 2-year old is obsessed with trash cans. What was the funniest thing your toddler got obsessed with?

How do you keep sex fresh and exciting over a long marriage?

My wife (36F) and I (37M) been married 7 years. We still have sex once or twice a week, but it doesn't have the excitement that it used to. We've tried sex pillows, some BDSM/rope play once in a while, but more often than not revert to pretty vanilla stuff, mostly because we're either too tired at the end of the day or don't have a lot of time for sex. What do you do to keep it fresh and interesting over the course of a long marriage?

How common is it for dads of babies/young kid to never solo parent?

For context, I'm a dad of a 6 year old. I've had her on my own many times since she was a baby while my wife was working, at workout classes, with friends, etc. I've also had her solo while my wife was out of town for a few days at a time since she was about 3. I'm honestly shocked and appalled by the number of women we know (friends and colleagues of ours) whose husbands never have the kids by themselves. Is this a common thing?

Should we vet candidates like we vet potential romantic partners?

Hear me out, when vetting dates to see whether they'd be good long term romantic partners we look for red flags and green flags. These are clues as to how they'll be over the course of a long-term relationship. If they treat service workers badly, they'll probably treat you badly. If they offer to help when they see someone struggling, they'll probably treat you well when you're struggling too. If they get drunk a lot and make bad decisions that hurt themselves and/or those around them, they may not be long term partner material. When vetting political candidates, should we look at them similarly? The things they do effect our lives in many ways, and we're stuck with them for a minimum of 4 years. We can't know everything about a person just based on their platform or the policies they support. Should we also be looking for subtle things that tell us about their character?

What did you play after you finished everything?

My wife and I played through this game co-op over the course of 4-5 months. We love a good challenge, and this game fit the bill. We got 300%, S ranked everything, and got all of the medals. Can’t wait for cuphead 2 to come out but I know that’s likely several years away. Any recommendations for co-op games with a similar challenge level?

Realtor Superstitions

A lot of things in this business can feel like luck, and therefore I think it can create a lot of superstitions among agents. For example, I don’t calculate commission on a transaction until after the appraisal because I think it’s bad luck otherwise. Of course the rational part of me knows that’s not true, but I still follow it. What are some superstitions you carry in real estate?

Have Democrats swung too far the other way on cancel culture?

I don't support cancel culture (e.g. I don't think Al Franken should've resigned), but I do feel there has to be a line somewhere - Nazi symbols are one example. Yet I hear a lot of liberals excusing Graham Platner's tattoo and past sexist/homophobic internet comments, infidelity, and abuse allegations. Have we swung too far the other way in rejecting Cancel Culture?

Dead friend visited me in a dream

I had an extremely vivid and strange dream last night that felt like a visitation. My friend died suddenly about 6 months ago. She was in her mid 30s. We had been close since we were in high school, and had been there for each other through some tough times.

In my dream I was in a room full of people at a party or some kind of event. I saw her in passing but I was skeptical that it was her because I knew she was dead. Then we were sitting at the same table across from one another. Her eyes locked on mine and she suddenly lunged at me and grabbed my hand. I jumped a bit but then she started talking to me in her usual happy and boisterous way telling me she missed me and that she couldn’t believe she was dead. She wasn’t upset exactly, more like surprised and maybe a little sad. I vividly heard music playing, like very pleasant indie rock that she liked to listen to but not any particular song I know. I told her I missed her too. We talked a little about her daughter and she rolled her eyes about decisions her ex husband had made since her death. Then we were just joking around like we used to and having like a fun catching up conversation. I felt happy and excited talking to her, and then I woke up, which interrupted our conversation. I could still hear the music as I was waking up, and I had a warm peaceful feeling.

It was a strange experience that felt very vivid and real. I’m not sure what to make of it.

It's a damn tragedy that Cleveland hasn't diversified its healthcare industry into health tech and engineering

https://www.cleveland.com/news/2026/05/before-ai-was-everywhere-a-cleveland-startup-had-a-head-start-then-ibm-watson-swallowed-it.html

The fact that we had such a great opportunity to be on the cutting edge of health data processing and IBM killed it with bureaucracy speaks to Cleveland's problem of not fostering small and mid-sized businesses, and favoring massive conglomerates. I'm not talking about indy coffee shops vs. Starbucks, I'm talking about the meat and potatoes businesses that are the lifeblood of a city's economy. We have a thriving medical industry and one of the best engineering schools in the country. There's no good reason why we shouldn't also have a thriving health tech, and biomedical engineering industry.

How did the 2016 Cavs championship change Cleveland?

It broke the 52 year championship drought, but did it actually change anything internally or externally? Did it change how we view ourselves or how we’re viewed by outsiders? A lot was changing for the better in Cleveland around that time, and it seemed like maybe an inflection point but how much of that was economic evolution and how much was due to changing the narrative about Cleveland’s sports culture being perpetually miserable?

Are liberals hammering conservatives enough about gas prices?

It’s unifying issue that affects all Americans and every aspect of the economy. It also has a clear and simple cause and republicans can easily blamed for it. If the democrats caused this the republicans would be screaming about it on TV and social media every single day. They’d have a short pithy name or catchphrase for it too. Have the democrats capitalized on this slam dunk issue enough?
