How do you teach a 9 year old to think before they speak?

Hi parents, I’d really appreciate some advice from anyone who has dealt with something similar.
I have a 9 year old boy who has received a tentative ADHD diagnosis. The assessment isn’t complete yet, but we’ve seen some of the symptoms for some time now.

The main difficulties at the moment are attention/focus at school (he starts but struggles to finish tasks) and something I’ve personally noticed around his social judgment and filtering.

He’s actually extremely sociable and extroverted and has lots of friends. He doesn’t seem to struggle with making friends at all. If anything, he’s very comfortable socially and enjoys being around people.

The issue is that he can be very impulsive about what he says in social settings amongst family and friends.

He’ll hear or notice something, think it’s funny or interesting, and immediately blurt it out without really considering whether it’s appropriate to say in that particular setting or in front of certain people.

For example, recently he was in the car with me, my sister, her husband and his younger cousin. He told his cousin’s dad that his cousin had said that horses have big butts. He was laughing and, in his mind, was probably just reporting something funny that his cousin had said. But my sister’s husband was quite taken aback, and I found myself feeling mortified.
There have also been occasions where he repeats things he’s heard or makes comments about subjects that are considered more adult or socially sensitive. He doesn’t necessarily mean anything by them. He just seems to have a very poor filter between “I’m thinking this” and “I should say this out loud.”

He also asks very direct questions about things he notices, sometimes without seeming to understand that there is a difference between asking something privately and announcing or discussing it publicly.

I’m trying not to shame him or make him feel that there is something wrong with him for being curious or outspoken. At the same time, I really want to teach him that there are certain things we can think about, ask a trusted adult about privately, or discuss in the right setting, but that we don’t necessarily say everything that comes into our heads in public.

For parents of children with ADHD (or children who struggle with impulse control/social cues), how did you teach this?

Are there particular strategies that worked for helping your child develop that “pause before you speak” skill and understand what is appropriate to share publicly versus privately?

I’d also be interested in hearing about any therapy or social-skills interventions that were particularly helpful.
We’re obviously going ahead with the full assessment, but I’d really appreciate practical advice from parents who have been through this.

Seville in August - don’t believe the Reddit horror stories 😂

Before going, I kept seeing people say August in Seville is unbearable and that you should stay away. Honestly, after spending 2 days and 2 nights there, I completely disagree.
Yes, it’s hot, but it wasn’t that bad. The city is built for heat with loads of shaded areas, courtyards, indoor places to escape to, and plenty to do.
And the city was so alive ALL DAY!! People were everywhere: eating outdoors, strolling around, taking tours, riding the hop on hop off bus. We even did a horse drawn carriage ride!

Restaurants were busy and the streets were full of people.
It definitely wasn’t the quiet, deserted city I was expecting from Reddit.
We just planned around the heat and took breaks when needed. Honestly, Seville in August was great and I’d absolutely do it again!!

Has anyone experienced something like this with toilets/bathrooms, and how did you learn to manage it?

For years, I’ve had an intense reaction specifically to \*\*toilet bowls and poo\*\*.

The sight smell or mental image of a used toilet can make me extremely uncomfortable, and often the image gets stuck in my mind and I keep replaying it.

I’ve also developed habits around it. I avoid toilets unless absolutely necessary, and I feel the need to keep bathroom doors shut. If I’m sharing a bathroom (which I try to avoid as much as possible), I can become very anxious about someone using it and about having to clean it afterwards.

A recent example: my beloved 9-year-old son used the toilet without me realising, and I only found out later. I cleaned everything properly with cleaning products, but the mental image still randomly comes back and makes me uncomfortable, even though the situation was completely dealt with.
What’s interesting is that I don’t have the same reaction to bodily functions generally. I can clean my child after diarrhoea or wash him without the same level of distress. \*\*It’s specifically the toilet bowl.\*\*

When I go on holiday with my partner, toileting becomes a source of mental distress. I sometimes avoid going until it’s absolutely necessary because I’m terrified of opening the toilet lid and seeing a smear or stain. I even travel with brand-new toilet brushes and cleaning products. I hate living this way.

I’m currently on holiday and I really don’t want this to take over my experience. I know I probably need to see an OCD/anxiety specialist, and I will, but I don’t have immediate access to one.

\*\*Has anyone experienced something similar? What actually helped you stop the mental replaying and make toilets feel like an ordinary part of life again?\*\*

I’d particularly love to hear about practical tips, psychological strategies or mindset changes that genuinely helped.

Choosing between two Lisbon neighborhoods -Avenida da Liberdade vs Alfama/Mouraria -for a family trip

Hi all! Planning a Lisbon stay this August with 2 adults and two boys (ages 8 and 9). Deciding between two apartments:

**1.	Avenida da Liberdade/Desterro** — central, flat, close to the luxury shopping boulevard and a short walk/metro to Baixa and Chiado.
**2.	Alfama/Mouraria** (near São Vicente de Fora) - right in the old town, hilly cobbled streets, close to the monastery, viewpoints, and Feira da Ladra market. Slightly bigger apartment (3 bedrooms) with top comfort/facility ratings.

The boys are really into flashy, glamorous stuff (they loved Dubai), while the adults love history. Everyone loves good food.

Which area would work better for us as a home base, and would you actually recommend staying in Alfama with young kids given the hills/stairs? Would love to hear from anyone who’s stayed in either area with a family. Thanks!

Family itinerary advice: Faro → Seville → Málaga → Faro (August)

Hi everyone, looking for advice on our family itinerary.

We are travelling as 2 adults + 2 boys (8 and 9). They love adventures and exploring, but also spend too much time on iPads. We know Seville will be hit but we are accustomed hot and humid temperatures.

Proposed itinerary :

5–12 August: Faro / Algarve
Beach, swimming, relaxing.

12 August: Bus Faro → Seville
Stay 2 nights
Options: Plaza de España, María Luisa Park, Santa Cruz, Alcazar (if energy allows), River/Torre
Evening walks and food.

14 August: Train Seville → Málaga
Stay 3 nights
Reason: experience the Málaga Fair (Feria de Málaga
Possible Málaga plans:
Explore the city, Malaga fair, hop on and off bus, Bullfight activities, kid- friendly activities (still deciding).

17 August: Bus Málaga → Faro
Continue Algarve holiday.

Questions:
Does the Spain itinerary make sense?
Would you spend the extra nights in Seville instead of Málaga?
Is Málaga worth adding for the Feria experience?
Any must-do activities in Seville or Málaga for boys aged 8 and 9?

Thanks so much!

I just finished watching Michael, and as a lifelong fan from Africa, I’ve always feltthe Pepsi fire incident marked a turning point in Michael Jackson’s life.

I’m sure he had access to the best medical care available at the time. But with today’s medical advancements, I can’t help wondering if he might have suffered less physically or had a better long-term outcome if it had happened now.

I’m also curious whether he ever underwent therapy for the trauma he experienced in childhood and later in life. If he didn’t, I wonder how much of a difference that could have made.

Ultimately, his death was due to the actions of his quack physician, Conrad Murray. But more broadly, I find myself wondering whether Michael might have lived a happier, less painful life if he’d had the right physical, medical and psychological support system around him.
