DIY Extractor + DAC for SACD using I-Sabre ES9038Q2M via I2S

I am really and truely down the rabbit hole, and i apologise in advance if this has been covered repeatidly. Feel free to downvote me if im off base here!!!

It seems to me that 2 DIY Boards, powered by 5V USB, could act as a Native DSD capable DAC - which could be used perfectly with a Sony BluRay or Universal Disk player.

  • Board one is the standard 'Audio extractor HDMI / MHL to I2S / Coaxial / Optical' from audiophonics
  • Board two is a DIY Raspeberry pi Dac, based on the DSD Capable ES9038Q2M

Both powered by USB C, so power is easily managed. The audio bridge would connect the Extractors I2S Output pins - to the I2S Input Pins on the DAC board. (still working this out but at least four connections would be needed - Ground, Bit CLock, Data, Left Right Clock)

The Player would have to be set to DSD ON, or BIT-STREAM - the extractor does its thing, seperating the DSD and outputting it to the board, which decodes to analogue. Game, set, match?

Really am waiting for the other shoe to fall here -

links to the two boards:

Love to get some feedback - has anyone attempted this?

SACD playback via HDMI Extractor for PCM 24bit

Been going down the rabbit hole, and wanted to ask for some advice. I like my current stack which includes a Fosi Audio ZD3 for digital decoding. I have played DSDs via a USB connected PC (linux running Cantata with the appropriate settings - the ZD3 detects and signals that its decoding DSD64) - sounds great i have zero complaints

But i have an itch, as i do have a BluRay player that supports SACD - from what i can see, i cannot connect this to my dac, and the player does not have analogue out. I know about the DOP adapters and how expensive they can be. My question is about PCM conversion in the player and then extracting the PCM out via coax digital.

If i set the SONY BD to DSD OFF, and PCM as output (2ch only, so downmixing 5.1). And then used a reasonable HDMI Extractor, to take the PCM and send it to my ZD3 via coax (or optical) - My amateur assumption is, this would work?

  • i would get a higher resolution output into my DAC
  • It would surpass CD playback quality levels
  • It would have all the benefits of DAC transport playback
  • No, it would not be TRUE DSD level audio quality, but it would be higher quality than basic CD Redbook

I guess what i am asking is - does this workaround seem sensible? Its not DOP, and therefore not pure SACD playback - but it would allow me to play the SACDs at a high level of quality (24bit PCM up to 88/176khz)

Thanks in advance - if this has been discussed previously, can you share a link, because everywhere i go, i see much talk of DOP, but not this specific workaround!

Gain Staging my system - issues with rotary encoder on amp

Having issues my system. Its relatively new. Stack as follows

  • Yamaha A-670 single input Amp
  • Fosi Audio P4 RCA Preamp (3 inputs 1 output) - connected to Yamaha - set to BYPASS Tone controls, and 3DB Gain (lowest)
  • Fosi Audio ZD3 DAC - bypass mode - 4 Sources - CD player (coax digital) - Majority Fitzwilliam (Optical) - TV (HDMI Arc) - PC (USB)
  • Turntable is Preamp built in, conected to P4 (Reloop RP2000MK2USB with OM10)
  • All cables are reasonable quality (Delaycon shielded, and 75ohm dedicated Sub/SPDIF for the CD)

The issue: Im having trouble gain staging the system. Currently a CD will sound loud at 12oc on the P4

A Vinyl, will require the P4 to be pushed to maybe 3oc on the P4 - while some videos, audio files on both the PC and the Majority end up requireing adjustment (as low as 11oc, and as high as 2oc)

Everywhere i have looked, i have seen advice indicating that the Yamaha should be set to maybe 60-70% volume. The main problem with this advice is that, i cant see what the yamaha is set to. It has an infinitely turning rotary volume knob. It could be zero, or 90% and i wouldnt know.

I guess im trying to understand how to set this system up. It sounds fantastic, but im concerned with not knowing what work the yamaha is doing, in contrast with the P4. I want to use the P4 as my main volume control, as it has a remote, and the yamaha does not.

Any help you folks could offer would be greatly appreciated. The system is a compromise for sure, but its what i have to work with.

Delighted New Fosi Owner - ZD3 and P4 working the magic for me

As the title says, i finally took to plunge and bought a P4 and a ZD3 last week. They arrived yesterday, and i have my new stack set up. EPIC

  • AMP: Yamaha A-670 - its great but with one RCA input, its limited. I had been using an RCA switch, which i hated.
  • Pre-Amp: P4 - this little beauty is doing the business now. I have 3 clean RCA inputs, and the the device is set to bypass. 3DB gain, the yamaha is doing the heavy lifting.
  • ZD3, connected to INput one on the P4. And into that, my majority Fitzwilliam via optical. MY CD via coax digital, and my TV via HDMI ARC
  • IM able to run my Turntable (Reloop RP2000 set to LINE with built in Preamp) - its connected to the P4 -

Epic stuff, really happy

New Wiim Ultra User - questions about my stack and connections.

Hi Everyone -

Soon to be WIIM Ultra user here. I have a few questions about set-up, and my stack, and really just wanna be sure before i take the plunge.

Yamaha A-670 Amp - I managed to buy one of these a year ago - it was new old stock and i got a killer deal. The whole reason im upgrading to the WIIM Utra is that the 670 has only one RCA input. So the Ultra will serve as my switch and hub, for all my devices. Intention will be to use the Ultra to connect a CD Player (RCA), Turntable (PHONO), TV (HDMI Arc). All will pump out through a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 6Rs. I also want to play my extensive FLAC/MP3 collection via USB Stick

Turntable with no Ground - I have a Reloop RP-2000MK2USB, which has a built in Pre-Amp, and Line/Phono switch. My intention is to connect this via the PHONO IN, but this model Reloop has 'Internal Grounding'. Iv been using it on LINE with the Yamaha, but for my newly upgraded stack to work, i need to connect it to the Ultra's built in Preamp. Im obviously concerned now, having seen that grounding is necessary for preamps. Everywhere i have looked i have seen it commented that the RP2000 is internally grounded. Will this be sufficient for the WIIM.

My system is a compromise for sure, but I have tried not to compromise sound quality. Im aiming for entry level audiophile territory, so i want to avoid a pesky RCA switch for the Ultras single RCA input. I have purchased descent shielded RCA Cables for everything. On paper i should be good to go, but only if my Reloops internal grounding holds up - otherwise, i am down a device. My CD player does not have optical out - its RCA and COAX digital, so i do need that standard line in. Besides which i want to hold on to the optical IN and OUT, for a possible CD Recorder down the line. (I would use optical IN/OUT as a digital recording loop). Also, just for your information, the Reloop has a built in RCA Cable, which cannot be replaced. It could IN THEORY be extended, but i have been warned against this

Im on a tight budget, considering what i have already spent. The Reloop was another great deal, bought from someone who damaged the original Ortofon Black needle - i upgraded to an OM10 for decent quality and i have no complaints. It was only after the fact that i realized it doesnt have a ground.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Recommend Stylus/Cartridge for Reloop RP2000MK2USB

Hi All.

So i just moved house, and wouldnt you know, the stylus on my Turntable was damaged. No idea how this happened, i had everything locked down, but its happened! Everything else is fine, and the current stylus is still playing, but i can see its damaged (i tested it on a low quality test record, which i got for exactly situations like this)

I was planning on upgrading the stylus anyway, because i understand the RP2000MK2USB comes with a fairly bog standard 'dj' class cart and stylus. Just wondering if anyone wanted to help me pick a replacement - here is my setup

Rp2000MK2USB connected to RCA switch - connected to Yamaha A-670 Amp - wharfedale diamond 6R speakers

My intention is to upgrade my hifi with a WIIM Ultra soon, so i will be switching from LINE out - to PHONO out - to take advantage of the WIIMs built in Pre-amp

The options im looking at for the Turntable:

  • Ortofon OM 5e- seems to be considered better than my current Reloop OM Black
  • Ortofon OM10 - currently on sale, so only 10 euro more than the 5E
  • AT-VM95E cartridge and stylus- this audio technica seems to be recommended in places - it would mean dumping the OM Cart, which i would do if it was worth it - this is the most expensive option - for me its 30+ euro more than the OM10 -

Listening wise: I have a large number of classical albums, which i enjoy occassionally. My wife though, loves listening to Daft Punk, along with 70s and 80s music - together we have about 40 vinyl, and we value this hobby - although we draw the line at buying very expensive original prints.

Im heavily leaning toward the OM10 as itts on sale, and recommended elsewhere

Thanks in advance - all advice is greatly appreciated

Trouble with single input Amp (Yamaha A-670) - need connectivity

Im trying to upgrade my audio, but I am using a single RCA IN amplifier – The Yamaha A-670. I love the sound quality, and it drives my Wharfedale Diamond 6R’s beautifully. The trouble has always been that it only has a single RCA IN at the back, with zero Digital connectivity. Here is my current Config

Wharfedale Diamond  6Rs

Yamaha A-670 connected to a Prozor RCA Switch (rotary)

Majority Fitzwilliam 3 for MP3, Bluetooth, Radio, and streaming (Connected by RCA to switch)

Reloop RP2000MK2USB – built in Pre-amp – RCA connected to switch

Marantz CD player – RCA connected to switch

TV- headphone to RCA adapter, and into the switch

What I am looking for is a device that I can connect to the amp, in place of the reliable (albeit poor) Rotary Prozor RCA switch. The Fitzwilliam outputs Coax Digital and optical, the CD player outputs Coax Digital, and the TV outputs Optical and HDMI ARC. My sole RCA ONLY device is the turntable, and it has a built in pre-amp (currently switched on)

Is there a powered device, that would act as a switch for the preferred digital connections. Any combination would work. If I am honest, I could live without the CD player for now. I seldom use it, preferring instead to stream and listen to 320K MP3s, and when I go analogue, I always go for the turntable. I realize that this (hypothetical) device would include a DAC chip. Something reliable would be preferable. SO far the only device I have found is the Arylic BP50 – iv heard mixed things.

Any advice would be of great assistance – Sincere thanks

Advice on Grandmothers Ring - Ireland

So i am currently in the process of moving house. And while packing, i found my box of jewellery, given to us by my grandmother. Its mostly common stuff, like holy cross necklaces, a claddagh ring which i know the history of - but there is this piece, which i know nothing about. Supposedly given to my GM, by her mother - i should point out that, my GM had altzheimers towards the end. I should also point out that this was 30+ years ago, and i am now in my 40s - but im recounting what i remember of this.

We went down the AI Gemini Rabbit hole on this one. I dont find the ring particularly pretty, regardless of the odd colouring/tarnishing on the body. having done several little experiments (fog test, laser pointer etc) - and uploading numerous pictures to gemin - The results have been unexpected

  • possibly quite an old ring - possibly late 19th century
  • 'cluster' ring, with apparent 'assymetric' cut on the central stone - which the AI assures me probably rules out anything fishy
  • odd number of 'accent stones'
  • AI intially speculated that the metal was Silver - but after analyzing the pics - it now suspects up to 14K gold, or Rose gold - it explained that the tarnish may be that the gold was mixed with other metals including silver
  • basket design - seemingly this is the open bottom part -

Iv been advised to get a professional valuation - frankly i am here because i am baffled - Iv included a few pics - sorry if detail is unclear - suffice it to say i did my best. Gemini recommended that i take the pic outside, so as to have a natural light source

Id love to know what people think - Is it possible this is actually a valuable antique piece of jewellery. It was out of place compared to the rest of the jewellery. It was for this reason that i remembered my GM saying it was her mothers- again, a stark contrast to the rest of the pieces - which are mostly religious in design, aside from her claddagh.

Love to get some opinions - even if the opinion is - this is a paper weight! Totally fine - just want to know if it is worth pursuing, so any advice and opinions are welcome - sincere thanks from ireland!
